Jeremy Clarkson Reviews the BMW M6 Convertible
What does everyone in Britain do for a living these days? We know that Bulgarians have taken all the jobs picking flowers, we know that London’s traffic wardens are all Nigerian, that your cockles were picked by a Chinaman, that your plumber’s a Pole and that whenever you ring a call centre it sounds like you’ve got through to the Kumars at No 42.

So, and I’m struggling here to think of the right terminology, what are the indigenous English doing to fill their days? I pay particular attention to people who appear on gameshows. In the past, people on Blind Date would usually claim to be retail managers, ie, shop assistants, but these days most people buy their groceries and their exercise equipment from the internet.

And we know from recent press stories that people are leaving the army in droves because half are being sent to war by Tony Blair armed with nothing but a twig and the other half are living on bases so squalid you can catch ebola from the light switches.

Yeah- but the manufacturer's always wrong. You don't know half of what we know if you think the manufacturer's estimates are correct. That's the #1 rule in acceleration tests: the manufacturer is always wrong. You should always try to disprove them.

The Audi RS4 is quoted by Audi at 4.8 seconds; I've seen 4.3. The BMW 335i is quoted at 5.3 seconds; 4.8 is attainable. Lexus says 4.9 seconds for the IS-F, and I doubt that they wouldn't beat that. I could go on...

"Shmikes" you can play that ugly game with the 5-series all day for all I care...just don't try it with the 6-series & especially not the M6. Hands down beautiful car's, but I'll take the coupe in black.

I might have to look at it, if I really like the way the 650ci drives but it doesn't have enough power.

However, a 650ci might do. Or an XKR. Or a 911.

'S4' if the 650i isn't powerful enough for you, then how have you been getting by with your S4? Trust me, the 6 manages to feel faster than it really is, not to mention it's a nick off from being as fast as the old M5.

I haven't driven it.

Isn't it heavier than the S4? That's the thing.

It would also be the devilish satisfaction of owning an M6...

(-;

But it probably won't happen.

The best looking BMW on the road, the 650i/M6.

Yeah an M6 would be the next step...mind you if I could take that step i'd take it into a V8 Vantage.

The 650i coupe weighs in around 3700lbs & the convertible 4200lbs. I'm guessing your S4 would be about 4000lbs.

I personally haven't seen official test numbers for the 650i coupe from any reviewer yet, but C&D clocked the heavier 550i at 5.0sec to 60, & the 1/4mile at 13.5sec.

Why V8 Vantage? I mean, besides the obvious. The M6 is less expensive, has better performance and a better interior.

I was considering a secondhad V8 Roadster, but thought the car would be more of a hassle than it's worth.

As usual, JC derides everything under the sun. But ultimately, he gets his point across and the gist of it is that the beemer M6 is one awesome car. For him, it isn't a car for posing - though you could do that happily as I think its one of the better Bangle designs - and needs to be driven and driven hard.

His reviews laced with satire are the best.
