The big 3 aren't gonna be selling SUV's in 10 years because nobody wants them NOW. And the big 3 have no intention of raising the gas mileage for their vehicles evidenced by their being against raising the federal auto efficiency standard.

No. It’s a blessing. We should have been able to increase efficiency by 20% 10 years ago, let alone 10 years from now. The big 3’s tendency to remain stagnant and push ancient technologies is the reason business is hurting so bad. They shouldn’t need legislation to figure that out.

The Volt can not be a façade this time, it needs to be built. Got that Rick Wagoner? Shipping a "plug-in" shell with a V8 to the press doesn’t quite cut it. Stop being the world’s Greatest Marketing and start building the world’s Greatest Motors. Forget the White House, you have import competition to worry about.

Yeah, let's boycott oil from a nation in our hemisphere because we the leader of that nation dared to say something bad about our president. Instead let's just keep getting oil from the middle east. They love us there.

And let's drill for oil in our pristine wilderness so that we can have enough to fuel our SUVs for another year. That will give everyone a chance to do all their off-roading and hauling for one more year (I mean take their kids to soccer practice) before trading up to a hybrid.

You know what?

Many people in my country Bulgaria drive their GAS-cars with propane-butane or with methane. I'm talking about over than 60% of people who doesn't drive a diesel, but GAS.

It's VERY cheap. just 0.60 USD per 1 liter = 2.27 USD per gallon. (Is that cheap for USA? Because for Europe is!!!)

And it's very very very clean. Almost any pollution.

Well, it's a little dangerous, but I've been driving a car with propane-butane for 10 years and I'm still alive. The car is black, which means more sun heating and higher temperature of the metal, but everything is still OK! :)

Methane cars. That is an interesting way in which to take the far worse greenhouse gas Methane [CH4, or C1] and convert it one-to-one into carbon dioxide. Methane is 23 times worse than CO2. However, the only way in which this is truly beneficial and sustainable is if the methane source is one which would normally would be realeased to the atmosphere. The problem, I would imagine, with collecting methane is the possibility of combustion in air when collecting it from biogenic sources.

Natural Gas is not a renewable form of energy, it is a hydrocarbon. I'm a Petroleum Engineer by degree and we drill for it just as we drill for oil. The only difference is that the gases are sufficiently lighter [i.e. C1-C5 or so] and oil is composed of around C6+. Truly, natural gas is the vapor phase of crude oil. All renewable problems associated with oil are also with natural gas. Methane does have other sources, but butane and propane are a bit more unique. Forgive me if everyone already knew this, that, or the other, but the petroleum industry is not really understood by many people.

Yep, gas guzzling SUVs and pickups make up the majority of the vehicles sold in this country. We can't even pretend to cut down consumption/emissions/greenhouse gasses as long as more than 1/2 of all vehicles average about 15 miles per gallon (11 on E85). There already is a gas guzzler tax on cars with fuel economy below 22.5 mpg average, the hypocricy must end and pickups and SUV should not be allowed to dodge the gas guzzler tax. This is the FIRST and most important step to accomplish this goal.

Of course, diesels that get 30% better fuel economy and 20% less C02 emissions is another very simple solution.

I know this is not a venue for politics, but his speech last night was great. I never voted for him and I am not a fan of any of his polocies but damn, he really pulled that speech of.
