Chrysler Open to Stricter US Mileage Standards

DaimlerChrysler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche said today that the company would be open to considering stricter U.S. fuel efficiency standards if the government used a size-based formula for any increase.

In a speech at the Washington auto show, Zetsche said changing the way regulators calculate fuel savings would make "far more sense than just picking a number out of the air."

Couldn't that be because they already have a plan in place to meet or exceed any planned change in the regulations with their diesel program?

Size based is not the correct way to go.

This will just encourage manufacturers to build bigger and heavier vehicles (espcially pickups and SUVs)

First, all vehicles MUST pay the gas guzzler tax, right now only cars do. The hypocricy must end and all SUVs and pickups must pay for their guzzling.

The arrogance of the DCX CEO is breathtaking. He is "open to stricter fuel economy standards" - well guess what Dieter the Republicans don't control the House and Senate and the Pres is weakened and likely not to veto any fuel economy legislation coming from the Dems. So guess what . . . we don't care if you're open or not you will not have a choice.
