BMW M5 6 Speed Falls Short of Expectations

I'm surprised. I thought BMW would do anything to give drivers the "Ultimate Driving Experience".
I'm sure this won't detract any hardcore BMW drivers.

not a surprise, BMW said from the get go that a manual transmission was wrong for the car. They knew ahead of time it would be a compromise, but American "purists" had to have it. Be careful what you wish for.

I have decided to never own a manual again.

Mating the 550i manual gearbox to the M10 engine was the quick fix to address the North American purist. BMW knew it wasn't technically a good fix but that is what happens when the accountants win the argument. The engine was derived from F1 technology and it is optimised to work with an SMG system.
If you put a manual gearbox into an F1 car, you will get the same result.To get a better result you may have to rearchitect the engine, and the management system.

The transmission for the M5 and M6 came from the last generation M5, not the 550i.

Admiral: I got confirmation by the Sales Manager at BMW, it is from the old M5 and not the 550i.

Sometimes the customer is not right. BMW already knows this so, why?

The era of manuals is over. With tiptronics/SMGs/DSGs or whatever catch name they're using now providing an engaging experience with superior performance delivery, there is no longer the need to use your left foot. Rejoice!! I've driven a stick for 20 years, and I, for one, am done with 'em. I dont want to hear anymore complaints about Lexus not offering manuals in their highest performance vehicles.

"renlex496" get with the program buddy. The IS-F is already outperformed by Audi's RS4, & a standard IS-350 can’t even keep up with BMW’s 750i through the slalom...ouch!

Lexus does have the world’s first 8-speed automatic transmission but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best. Everybody knows that Audi’s DSG is currently herald as the best automatic transmission in the business.

That said manual transmissions are far from being extinct as they are still the most fun to drive. So quit trying to defend the IS-F’s lack of a manual by claiming their obsolete when they’re clearly not (especially not in America just look at the M5).

The IS-F doesn’t have a prayer of being the “king” in this performance segment, in fact not one Lexus is considered hands-down top of it’s class.

P.S. attend grammar school before responding.

OMG! How many times do I have to repeat the SMG is just a manual without a clutch??? I think BMW did a big mistake putting a manual in the M5. The SMG does the job perfectly and is faster.

s4.. smg is way superior in terms of race technology.. just doesnt work too well in smarling traffic.. but please dont deulde yourself (again) into thinking that Audi has ANY superior technology over BMW. Its just not true, no matter how often you post.

I love how you are an idiot and a poor one at that. Every car review has said. in terms of technology, the SMG is better delivering faster gearshifts than even the ferrari F430.. I do agree it probably bogs down in traffic.. and by the way for you VW jerkoffs. DSG was licensed from Bosch.. audi has practically nothing to do with it, other than incorporate it into heir cars. the SMG is made in house.. again.. an example of how technology is used as a competitive advantage by BMW.
