Should Audi Make a DS4?
Look at the formula of the S-cars nowadays. Audi’s days of high-strung turbos in S-cars may be past at this point, and some may lament that fact. However, the current mix of S models remain strong GT offerings in each respective class. Drop a large displacement engine in a smaller car, add sport kit like wheels, suspension and seats and the result is what we all lust for at the Audi dealer or on the show stand.

Why couldn’t this be the same for diesel motors? Think of the S4 as it is now. However, drop Audi’s new chain-driven 4.2 TDI under the hood and badge it the ‘DS4’. The car would look and handle like the current S4, and we know by seeing the performance of the A8 4.2 TDI that performance wouldn’t be far off of the petrol S version. Even better, the larger and heavier A8 4.2 TDI gets 30 mpg, well above the S4’s North American rating of 21 mpg.

Great idea, and I have thought from the beginning the R8 should come with a twin turbo direct injection V10 Diesel. I think the US needs to realize the merits of deisel cars, and maybe a few halo cars would do the trick.

Perhaps they could sandwich the Q7 V10 TDI's engine into it (the R8)? That would be unbelievable.

they can't put the V12 in the R8 or any other one of their cars because it is too big.

Except the A8. I would think they could make an ultra hi-po A8 diesel with this engine, because there's already a W12 fitting in there.

AUDI said that they can't in the Q7 V12 TDI press release. i think it is because the W12 is a wide engine and the V12 is just too long.

That would be phenomenal. I do think with the latest Le Mans successes' and proven diesel technology versatility and efficiency, Audi will utilize this tech. in more cars.

In fact, they should have diesel variants for every model.

This would be awesome.

I'd rather go fast AND have great gas mileage in my S4 than just go fast... the mileage could easily be twice as good (I get 15-17mpg now). The only drawback? The exhaust note. I know that modern diesels (especially the 4.2TDI) aren't raspy and truck-like, like how they used to be, but it would be hard for that engine to duplicate my S4's addictive tune.

No, it would be awesome if you had the choice of petrol S4, petrol RS4 and diesel DS4. All would be very fast and very nice.

Yep, a 300+ hp diesel for the A4 series is possible.

A diesel version of the RS4 would be smoking hot.
Almost as hot as the R8.

In the US, diesel is 20% more expensive than gasoline, which negates any mpg savings......

No it is not. Try only about 10% more compared to regular and only about 3% more than premium. This sure compares well to about at least 30% better fuel economy for the diesel.
