Audi R8 - IN A CLASS BY ITSELF

Audi R8 - IN A CLASS BY ITSELF
Plays Well By Itself
Audi R8 is a superbly balanced, classically styled, high-powered sports car

What is a supercar and how do you qualify it? Is that moniker bestowed because of the money spent, its performance or the expectation of exclusivity? Do all these determine supercar status?

For now, we make that decision, and while there are vastly more expensive rides, some slightly quicker cars and others that will sell in fewer numbers than Audi’s R8, this clearly qualifies for such class ranking. Interestingly enough, it does not suffer from the traditional concerns that carmakers have in terms of targeting competition, because there was no target for Audi engineers; they were to craft a flagship without regard to competition. Besides which, the VW Audi Group has the Lamborghini Gallardo, an all-purpose sports car whose unbridled performance aims squarely at Stuttgart and Porsche, as well as Maranello and Ferrari.

No, Audi had the ability—and the charge—of crafting its own target. As best as we will tell, the R8 is more refined than a Porsche and has better balance and on-road manners; it is clearly more sophisticated than a Ferrari F430 or a Ford GT; it has creditable performance on par with others in class (0-62 in a conservative 4.6 seconds), with all-wheel drive to boot; its style is unmatched, except perhaps by something from Mercedes or McLaren, but if those are its competitors it blows one away on its tactile experience and the other on price-value relationship.

Simply, the Audi R8 is in a class by itself. Yeah, those are robust words—and to faithful followers of other marques, too often fighting words—but Audi isn’t spoiling for a fight. The R8 has no competition; there should be no cross-shopping, no head-to-head comparison that is either fair or appropriate. (Number weenies will say it’s all about who gets to 60 mph faster or which car is lighter or what the top speed might be; those numbers are tales of the tape. In a heavyweight title bout the numbers are facts, but rarely do they crown a champion.) This is about how the R8 behaves, how it makes you feel, how it will elevate you in standing with the rest of your car-crazed friends that is most important.

i like the audi r8, and the only way to really look at it is in its own class, because otherwise it seems pretty pointless, overpriced, and slow. to be honest this car is no match for a ferrari, and the intent was not to compete with the same car it was based on. from reading reviews on it, it drives more like a gt than exotic. the 911 is faster and cheaper, the m6 is faster and more luxurious, and cheaper, the list goes on and on, but again ill give audi credit for stepping out of the box and creating "an exotic styled gt"

...#1: There is no Porsche 911 model that is both faster and less-expensive than the Audi R8.

#2: As I WISH you'd know by now, Audi's 0-60 estimates are always painfully off-the-mark. The car will be much quicker than their 4.6 second estimate.

#3: You don't even know the price yet. So, actually, my #1 might not be true.

the mags are saying around 110,000, you might want to brush up on your porsche info and test because, 0-60 4.6 seconds can be done by 911 carrera for what 75 grand, a six cylinder, and all of 100 less horses than the r8, if you move up to a 110,000 porsche you have 911 gt3 which is there a really need to mention 0-60 or performance comparisons, no its not at all...and WHY ARE YOU SENSITIVE ITS JUST A CAR...LOL SEEK HELP. and all those are just excuses because the m6 is also a luxury gt, with four full seats, the r8 is a mid engined 2 seater, hell a cts-v is as fast as the r8 with 20 less horses, a 911 has 100 less and 2 less cylinders whats your point....but as i said the r8 is a wonderful car in its own class, you cant beat its looks for the money, but by comparison it falls way short of well just about anything.....and a 335i is only .2 slower to 60 with 300 horses lol

every rs4 test ive seen has been slower, anywhere from 4.6-4.8, read an edmunds test they got 4.7, c&d got 4.6, autoweek got 4.9 now this is with 420hp an m3 with 333hp could do a 4.8, and the gallardo goes 0-60 in 4.2 i doubt the same basic car with less 80 less hp will be just as fast so 8.6-4.8 sounds right , or any other mag. they even wondered why it was so slow, people take cars so personal its kinda psycho, facts are facts whether you like them or not, its not about cheap speed its about

4.8 is the absolute QUICKEST an M3 has ever gotten; I don't know where you got the 4.9 you quoted for the RS4, but that's the SLOWEST I've ever seen.

The RS4 can easily get 4.2-4.5 seconds, if you're skilled with a manual transmission.

Audi ALWAYS underestimates their times, and you're very wrong here.

They originally said 5.6 seconds for the S4 sedan with manual, one magazine got 4.9 in an S4 vs. C32 comparison test a few years ago. They lowered it to 5.3 seconds, which is closer to the average time.

They quote 5.0 seconds for the S8; I've seen 4.7 by a couple magazines.

They say the A3 2.0T goes from 0-60 in 6.7 seconds or something, and it's more like 6.0-6.4.

Don't put Lexus in the same category as Audi. They have no racing history and haven't even released a GT yet.

And as for the POS M6, there's really no comparison, and they don't compete. And the R8 will undoubtably be much faster than the times quoted by Audi, who always underestimates.

Additionally, I think for a car with heavy, advanced quattro AWD the time quoted by Audi are extremely impressive. Imagine how this beast will handle on a wet track.

The V10 engine rumoured to be in the pipeline will truly put this one of a kind car in a class by itself.

The only competitors are the Gallardo and 911. Sorry, BMW doesn't have anything to compete at this level.

if you read my post you will see where i got it from AUTOWEEK, all the other times are there to, there is no excuse for a $70,000 420hp sedan to perform as well as a 38,000 bmw 335i with 300hp, period. you should get what you pay for. and AGAIN audi is not trying to compete with the car its based on. the lambo is the more expensive, faster car (the real ferrari competitor) if the r8 has no competition than why can compare to the 911 which is faster, cheaper ( a porsche thats cheaper than an audi thats funny, and the all around better sports car, the gt3 with 20 less horses does 60 in 4 flat, thats a 6 cylinder by the way. so face facts the rs4, and r8 are slow by comparison, im sure the r8 will be a great car, but for the money there are plenty of better sports cars, but hey in a class of your own you dont have to worry about the fact you dont quite measure up.

S4 ... the fastest that any M3 is 4.67 0 to 60 ... It was in the article back in 2003 that compared the AMG's of Mercedes to the BMW M models ... I believe it was either Car & Driver or Road & track ....

As far as the R8 goes, I think it is a very nice performance car. I have to disagree with the fact of it being in a class all its own. There are alot of performance & Gt coupes & conv in this segment ... BMW M6 coupe & Cabrion ... Porsche 911 & GT3 ... Mercedes SL 500, 55 AMG, 63 ... to name just a few and there are a few more ... That is a pretty good group to be in, but the R8 is not in a class all by itself.

This car, I can't describe it.

It's so, so, so beautiful.

With every new article, I want it more.

I need to drive it.

I need to see it.

I need to have it.

The Audi R8 is the perfect car.

It is beautiful; one of the most beautiful, in fact.

It is luxurious; sumptuous, with the finest leather, wood or carbon fiber surrounding you.

Its engineering is masterful, employing a fatastic sport sedan's V8 and true supercar handling.

It is desirable, and with each new picture it becomes moreso.

"The R8 represents for Audi an opportunity to have a legit flagship, something it can hold up as an exemplar of its recent and past racing heritage, something that prompts buyers to think of Audi as a legitimate competitor to BMW and Mercedes-Benz, something those in the know have been saying for years. It does this superbly."

Yes.

What I love about the R8 is that even though it is amazingly beautiful, it remains pure.

It doesn't have any in-your-face design bits or trendy(and ugly) carbon fiber thrown about the exterior. The interior looks to have good ergonomics and is visually exciting at the same time, which is rare in any car at any price.

The only thing that bothers me about it is that I can't decide what looks better: all black or white with the black side blades?

Well done Audi!!!

The R8 is dead sexy. So what if it's an "Audi" supercar? Mercedes has made one why can't Audi?. Actually the Big III are all capable of creating a hyper car that performs.

Afterall, Audi is last but not least to make an 100K + sports car. Last don't mean worst either. The R8 will boost the reputation of Audi greatly and will make them more recognized like BMW/MERC depending on which part of the world you are from. Great car, great looks, great performance (even with the V8), great sex appeal as well I might add.

I'm a Merc fan all the way but Audi has done an awesome job in creating this car. It looks the part of what it was designed to be. A well priced supercar that's going to fill in a niche market that I believe Audi has been waiting for. It's a great alternative to Ferrari and Lamborghini. Hell I'd choose this over the SL even though it's as luxurious as they come. But for the price i would add the difference to get an R8.

The point is that in 1999 there were multiple teams with full factory efforts(competiton). Audi lost. I believe the BMW and the toyota had a dramatic battle for the victory, with bmw winning that year. Anyway after 99 toyota, BMW, and Merc left lemans to concentrate there efforts on Formula one.Audi stayed in Le mans to play with the privatier teams, wheres the competition in that? Thats like a Professional sports team with all its money, competing against a college or high school sports team with very limited funding in comparison to the pro team. IF Audi wants to show that they have any motorsport game they should go to F1 where all the big dogs play. Where Major manufactures spend hundereds of millions of dollars developing new technologies, just to manybe get the slightest edge over the other teams, and all the other teams are working just as hard to win. That is competition. Competiton is not, racing small teams, and victory coming so easily that you throw an oil burning motor in your car and claim you revolutionized the sport.

Those who are saying the R8 is beautiful must be smoking crack. Compare to that Gallardo, the R8 is FUGLY. What's wrong with the R8 design in side profile? It looks like the designer took the front section of one car and the rear section of a different car and glued them together in the middle. And what's up with the black "rear door"? It looks out of place. I'd take the Gallardo over that weird looking R8 any day of the week. That Gallardo is pure sex on wheels!

------------------

Your point EXACTLY, so you spend your time at home having 'pure sex' while you're looking at photographs of the Gallardo. First off, if it wasn't for VW, the Gallardo wouldn't even be possible. Secondly, if you haven't noticed VW owns Lamborghini, and last but not least the R8 is not targeting it's sibling(in this case the Gallardo). So enough about your fantasy Gallardo you retardo cause you look like one by putting down the R8 when the people at VW AG funded the developement of the car you like so much.

Another thing... your name just says it all... you're an admirer... so until you can afford one of these cars perhaps you should take the time now to learn what style is instead of saying what many might say about this R8. If anything the R8 is sex on wheels (not putting down the Gallardo though as it is a nice car as well). BUT!... it serves a different purpose as it's etched in a niche market of it's own which gives it more reason to be in a class of its own.

-My two cents

The competition isn't there because the Audi has been to strong, to reliable and to efficient. Audi got FSI direct injection from the Le Mans racing several years before everyone else copied Audi (Pontiac,Mazda, BMW and Lexus)

Now with the R10 Audi will directly compete with the diesel Peugeot 908. Audi has already learned a lot about making performance diesels and will use that knowledge to make the best diesels in the world.

Fun Fact 1-They started winning races after all the major manufactures,w/ full factory efforts left lemans for F1.
FUN FACT 2-The 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL, the first gasoline-powered automobile to use direct injection.

considering Peugeot is not that big of a motorsport player, and possibly the first real comp. the audi campain will come up against. It should be interesting to see.But overall the past 6-7 years have not been that impressive considering what i mentioned in my previous post.

The MB 300 SL was the first car to use fuel injection, not direct fuel injection. Audi was the first to use it on virtually all of its vehicles, it came from the racing R8. The other manufacturers are welcome to come back anytime. Cadillac attempted to challange the R8, only to leave two years later with no results. To call the R8/R10 not impressive shows that you know nothing about racing.

Did you know that audi also dominated the american Trans-am series and in the beginning of the nineties crushed the competition off which BMW and Mercedes where a part off in the DTM.

Not to mention the fact that Audi dominated 90% off all the European Touring car championships in the Mid-nineties.

Agent63, can you afford either cars? No, I don't mean selling both of your children to obtain one of theses machines.

Who cares if VW owns Lamborghini. VW should have enlisted the designer from Lamborghini to design the R8 because the R8 is hideous. If you think the R8 is sex on wheels in comparison to the Gallardo. Then you need to visit your optometrist real soon.

Go ahead, continue dreaming about your transformer on wheels called the R8. I hope you don't commit suicide because of the truth.

-------

Actually to tell you the truth, yes I could but it wouldn't be practical for my everyday life. In comparison with the F430 I would take the F430 since R8 is in a class of its own I wouldn't compare these two to begin with. However if it's Ferrari vs. Lamborghini I would take the Murcielago. I don't watch transformers but apparently you know what it is. I'm going to end this little so called debate before it gets too personal. No need to cry buddy. Like I said it's debating for fun. I hope you didn't take it to heart I mean we are all mature adults right? ;) even though transformers was mentioned, hey it's all good.

It's just car-talking-fun

Hey agent 63, why did you pay too much for your car. Probably because you have nepoleon syndrom, allthough i agree on some of your comments, you seem to just want a badge or something. I hope you have a smart remark, but im sure youll say somethjing like you have more money than me.
----------------

Actually no im not going to mention anything about me having more money. I'm not an ignorant person who thinks highly of himself. Sorry but just like with LexusAdmirer i'm feeling this car website has gone to a personal website where people start trouble. Talk is cheap especially online. I don't come to this website to debate my own life vs somebody elses.

-Done

It's definitely a calls of its own:

Too ugly(Need I address it?)

Too heavy(3500 lb for 2 seater? ridiculous)

Quattrro w/ mid-engine layout? Only VW will do that. Ferrari doesn't have it. Boxster doesn't have it. I hate it when ADUI can simply make R8 better by putting up w/ RWD whiule saving weight.(Maybe typical AUDI buyers don't know how to properly control the rear tires)

Now tell me it's supercar?

The GT3 would eat it for breakfast and priced lower too!
