BMW bringing diesels to US with new X5 in mid-2008

Mark your calendars. BMW will be bringing their first diesel to North America in mid-2008. WindingRoad is reporting that the new BMW X5 3.0d will come to our highways by mid-2008. The BMW X5 3.0d has a 3.0 liter direct-injection diesel engine that produces 245 horsepower with 384 lb-ft of torque giving it the ability to do 0-60 in 8.2 seconds. The diesel SUV gets 21 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

That was the first word that came to my mind too. Hopefully the soccer moms will pick up on this great idea that is way overdue. The BMW 3 liter diesel engine is just as good if not better than it's gasoline counterpart. The X5 is the perfect place to introduce it to the U.S.

I prefer a TDI and more specifically the Audi Q7 TDI Bluetec that will arrive in the same timeframe, but another diesel is great.

AmazingBimmer, may I ask you to explain what is "vastly crappier" about Audi's Bluetec system than BMW's regular diesel system?

I know chewy is totally biased and he didn't have to bring Audi up... but then again, omarrana could've made the title "BMW Has Given Up: Copying Mercedes and Audi with Diesel SUV in 2008".

What I want to know is why all of these German brands are bringing diesels stateside? Is it because there is a big demand here for diesels in cars or just to compete with each other?

Will, it's not like the RX400h has a hardcore fanbase that can't be penetrated. This is an open market, and combined, there seem to be a lot more European luxury car fans than Japanese luxury car fans!

Because the TDI Q7 is quicker, check out some video that was posted a while back. The 3 diesels had similar power (TDI for the Audi, BMW and MB diesel) but the Q7 was a second quicker, because the TDI delivers.

Of course it did. The S-Class is better than the A8. But that has nothing to do with their diesel SUVs, and there was nothing prompting you to post about that article.
