Honda tells US government to beef up vehicle fuel standard

Honda picked the perfect week to attack the US government since it will be running a commercial during the SuperBowl this Sunday which states the Honda is “The Most Fuel-Efficient Auto Company in America.” The Japanese automaker today that the US government needs to do a better job of getting more fuel efficient vehicles on the roads. It said that the US should beef up gasoline mileage requirements and offer incentives to consumers who buy vehicles that burn less fuel. The average fuel economy of a passenger car is 27.5 miles per gallon since 1985.

“We believe it is time for the federal government to take act ion to improve vehicle economy,” John German, manager of American Honda Motor Company’s environmental and energy analysis division, said in written testimony to a Senate Energy Committee hearing on fuel efficiency in the U.S. transportation sector.

“At the same time, Congress should develop a program of broad, performance-based incentives to stimulate demand in the marketplace to purchase vehicles that meet the new requirements,” he said.

No that is not the way to go. REALIZE that more than 1/2 of all vehicles are trucks (pickups and SUVs) We can't have most of our vehicles be gas guzzlers [that don't even pay their gas guzzler tax which is a hyporcritical shame] and then expect passanger cars to make up for the fact that most vehicles on the road are gas guzzlers. No breaks to pickups and SUVs, they have to pay for their gas guzzling. No increase in passanger car fuel economy standards before someone makes sure that pickups and suvs are acountable for their gas guzzling.

Read between the lines. Honda doesn't care so much about the enviroment on this. And I am not saying they should but they must have something up their sleeve and maybe trying to get there competition to spend billions of dollars on something they have already figured out. Why not make the Fed make your comeptitors spend the money. This might be a good hand at poker.

I agree with Honda. Gas mileage figures need to be increased to force GM, Ford and Dodge to either increase the gas mileage or go under. But, whether or not the Feds do, the market already is headed in that direction so it doesn't matter WHAT the Feds do.

Honda is only really targeting Toyota with their superbowl ad. Trying to kill the misconsption that Toyota is green. Go Honda.

I just checked www.fueleconomy.gov and the Toyota corolla 5 speed manual has a 36mpg combined, while the Honda Civic 5 speed manual has a 33mpg combined fuel economy.

The only reason that Honda would considered the most fuel efficient company in American is beacuse they don't have any V8 vehicles,but Honda would have made a V8 they would be eating their words,so Honda needs to shut up and sit down and stop trying to make the other car companies look bad!!
