Audi Posts a 5.2% Increase in January Sales

Audi of America today reported strong January sales results. Sales totaled 6,399 vehicles, a 5.2% increase over the previous year, and the best January in the company’s history. January marked the 10th month of the past 12 when Audi sold more vehicles than the pervious year.

Johan de Nysschen, Executive Vice President of Audi of America, Inc. stated, “Audi has a great deal of momentum as we enter 2007. We’re coming off record sales in 2006, residual values on our new vehicles are, on average, the best in the luxury set, and the R8 sports car is generating a great deal of interest in the brand.

“2007 can be another great year for Audi and our customers,” he said. “We have three significant launches, including the TT Coupe and Roadster, the R8 mid-engine sports car, and the A5 coupe. We’re certainly looking to set another record this year.”

The January sales figures were fueled by an 11.8% increase for the A4 model line, as well as continued strong results for the Audi Q7 (1,636 deliveries). Audi saw its biggest growth in the Pacific Northwest region which posted a 60.7% increase over last year’s numbers. New Jersey (44.9%), the Desert region (43.3%), Los Angeles (41.2%), and Miami and Michigan (37.5%) also saw big gains in January.

Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales were also up for January. Sales totaled 1,859, a 5.7% increase over the previous year.

Audi of America is headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan, and markets a line of luxury cars built in plants in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm, Germany; Bratislava, Slovakia; Györ, Hungary; and Changchun, China (local market only). The parent company, Audi AG, is headquartered in Ingolstadt, Germany.

that 5.2% increase masks some pretty lousy numbers. Double digit declines for many of their lines, only A4 posting a modest increase of a few hundred units. Almost the entire gain was made by the new Q7.

You know what makes you even more annoying, is that I happen to love Audis, so these sales numbers are not good news to me. The TT is one of the most beautiful cars ever made, and the A4 cab is on a short list for our next car.

But facts are facts, Audi is not off to a great start, if they're going to rely on SUV sales. Look what happened to Ford and GM.

What you just said reminds me of something. Remember the Lexus RX? It single-handedly propelled Lexus to #1, and it was the only consistently top-selling model in their lineup. I just had to put that in.

Losses nonwithstanding, they made a gain this month. A gain is a gain, no matter how you put it.

My point is valid, and you know it. The A3, A6, A8 and (naturally) TT sales TANKED, and the A4 was barely up (cab sales down, despite update). Only the Q7 registered any noteworthy sales. When the RX debuted, the LS and ES were still going strong, and have never slowed, other than the expected drops late into their model runs. People are so quick to criticize the RX, one of the most perfectly conceptualized vehicles ever. Imagine a reasonably priced luxury vehicle that combined Americans' love of SUVs with an unheard of car-based practicality. It truly was revolutionary. The ML and X5 contributed to their brands' bottom lines as well, tho they missed that sweet spot of pricing, performance, liveability, reliability, luxury, and fuel economy that the RX mastered, so were never as huge a success as the RX.

Back to your point, Lexus clearly revels in the RX's success, but take its numbers out and you still have a line-up that posts solid numbers. Audi, this month, cannot claim that.

Kay, I'm not going to be hard on you, because you said you wanted an A4 Cabriolet.

However, you must admit, without the RX, BMW would be #1. If you took out the X5 AND RX, BMW would probably still be #1. The 3 Series and 5 Series sell as well as the ES, if not better.

I'm inclined to agree with you. I hope they can do better in the future- I'm sure the new TT and TT Roadster will make huge gains in trendy cities (LA, Chicago, NYC). The A4 is understandable, because it is pretty near the end of its lifespan, also. But to know that they sold over twice as many cars last month as they did this month is upsetting. They need to be more consistent, because it would be grand if they sold over 1,000,000 units this year (worldwide), and over 100,000 in the US.

A6 production has been cut in favor of the European market where Audi is making more $$$.
The A4 Cab at this time is slow, well because it is freaking winter and production is reduced because of that as well.
A3 is available in very limited numbers. My dealer only has 4 in stock and they do sell them usually well. Here again the production is switched to the European market where the car sells best.
There are no 2007 TTs. the new one will be out in March as a 2008.
A8 production is limited as well.
These numbers are quite good considering that except special leases, (which are no different than the competition) there are no rebates on ANY of these cars!!!
It does tell you how good the A4 is when the car itself has been around for some time.
It outsells the IS that has only been out for a little over 1 year!!

that is alot of excuses ... So why doesnt Audi sell more cars in the US, than Infiniti? Since Infiniti has about half of the production vehicles. In January, Inifiniti sold about 8500 vehicles and Audi 6500. I believe BMW sold more 3-series cars in the month of January than Audi sold in the entire lineup ... let the bashing begin ... ps. BMW's numbers are up about 3% to about 19,500 vehicles in the month of January
