Oprah Loves the new Lexus LS

Oprah Loves the new Lexus LS
On today’s episode of Oprah, which showcased some of the latest inventions and gadgets that help change our lives. Among the cool inventions was the new Lexus LS460, which had the ability to self-parallel park. Oprah, in the driver’s seat, took hold of command and tried out the system for herself. Her initial reaction? “How cool was that!” Some of the notable impressions that she made when she stepped into the vehicle was her amazement of the interior, in which she complimented on.

The entire parking process for Oprah took about 4 minutes, however, her foot was tightly snugged on the brakes. Also interesting was that not only did she press the Start button, but held it for quite some time, until she realized that it was already starting up.

renlex: the ES350 is a better car than the 5 series?!? based on what criteria.

sure it's quieter, has softer leather and a better nav. but it's the 60-plus year old buyers of the ES that value those things.

these cars are not in the same class nor are they remotely comparable in terms of performance, handling and style.

Oprah also did a show about driving from Orange County to Las Vegas and when she was out in the middle of the Mojave Desert on the 15 freeway she stopped in to a gas station where they charge $4.25 a gallon and she had no idea how to pump gas into the car.

Oprah needs self-parking because I'm sure she doesn't know how and I'm sure she normally doesn't drive.

some of us buy cars that are fun to drive, handle well, provide feedback from the road and just plain look good (i.e. different from every other car on the road). in these areas lexus has never impressed me. but i realize that millions of people value the things the brand is good at.

Ever since its debutantelike entrance on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2005, the Pontiac G6 never had a chance to be anything but a chick car.

When Winfrey jumped up and down on the stage shouting, "Everybody gets a car! Everybody gets a car!" the prospect of ever marketing the Pontiac G6 to the American male went out the window. The Oprah seal of approval might have made the G6 world famous overnight, but it instantly lost any hope of street cred.

The Lexus LS460 won, period. If you want to talk about a big bloated lexury sedan, just look at the S-class and 7 Series. Yeah! you German fanboys wish the S-class, which already look outdated and the 7 Series look as good as the Lexus LS460.

ALso, i would like to point out your wrong. According to edmunds.com, the LS460l that was just posted yesterday beats the S class and 7 series in acceleration. Bimmers are overated, just because they can handle well doesnt make it the best cars in the world.

lexus can excel in what they know best, luxury and technology. I really dont care if my lexus handles worse than a bimmer, at least i know i bought the right car.

One I can think of had the LS460L coming in last, in a test involving ALL the luxury sedans. Remember that?

it bombs compared with the S on handling, acceleration, braking, rear seat room, styling (my opinion, but it's so easy to mistake the ES for an LS, not something one wants when spending major dollars for a sedan)

and i quote
"Driven harder at our test track, our Lexus LS 460 L maintained this high level of composure, despite the fact that it's softly tuned. Its 61.6-mph slalom speed falls squarely between the standard-wheelbase BMW 750i (60.2 mph) and the Mercedes S550 (63.9 mph). In comparison, the regular-wheelbase LS 460 carried 63.0 mph through the cones."

i believe that means it handles better than the bimmer IL model.

"The LS 460 L accelerates to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and reaches the quarter-mile in 14.3 seconds. This performance doesn't seem particularly noteworthy until you realize the L model is not only as quick as the standard-wheelbase model, but also quicker than both the BMW 750i and Mercedes-Benz S550."

One of the reasons I thumb through posts on this site is because so many idiots post comments that give me a good laugh. Does Oprah liking the LS mean its a good car or let me guess she walks to work so this is the first and only car she’s ever liked??? What do you expect her to say if the car is being marketed on her show. This is simply a smart advertisement for a product using a medium such as a highly rated talk show that reaches a shitload of viewers. I bet she loves Pontiacs too after all she gave one to everyone who attended her show when the new G6 came out over 2 years ago.. Oprah also drives a Chevy impala so now what does that tell you??? Warren buffet the father of all investors and one of the richest men in the world drives a Lincoln and so what? Houstoncutie is ostensibly pumped up about listing celebrities that drive Lexus. What a joke!! Are you looking for validation for what's essentially a good car that's geared towards people who don't really enjoy driving?? Here's some news for you. Bloomberg also has an A8, and his daughter Georgina drives a black Q7, Seal drives a silver Q7, Mariah Carey has an A8, the whole real Madrid soccer team drive Q7s, Bobby Rahal, and his son Graham Rahal drive RS4s..and the list goes on..so.what does this all mean?...nothing!! For one thing, most celebrities can afford, and tend to own many cars some have 10 car garages that include most luxury makes Cadillac, Lexus, Audi, BMW, Mbenz, Ferrari...you name it!! Even celebrities like Jay Leno who are also real car guys have scores of cars made up of different marques. Does Bill Gates have only one car?? Here's a "reality check" Lexus is good car, but certainly in the US its basically a chick-car or for men that pee sitting down. Almost 50% of the Autos sold by Lexus in the US are SUV's of which 70% are driven by women (especially the RX). The ES & LS are driven by either women (just over 50%) or 70 year old men that think driving feedback is the voice in your navigation system. Do the math, and you’ll find that over 60% of Lexus drivers are women (that’s almost 2 of 3), and the rest are retirees leaving a small % of what I call “outlier buyers”.. The LS is basically a floaty bouncy more reliable Buick that takes a lot longer to stop, and Toyota is not stupid. They can build a better handling car if they really wanted to, but that will alienate their target market, whose needs they cater too very well. Want something that handles, get an Audi, BMW or Benz or Infinity. Why doesn’t Lexus have an enthusiast club???? Because most Lexus owners are not enthusiasts..period!!! Who will run the club..a bunch of housewives and geriatrics talking about nail polish, Viagra and Depends “undergarments” Give me a break…no more stupid comments!. Don’t look to celebrities to validate what you’re driving. Drive what you want, but just be sure to quickly get out of my way when you’re doing 40mph in the left lane, and you see the 4 rings in your rear

Will,
You're clueless, and you said the key word. "On the web"!! That's my exact point. Lexus has websites in US, UK, and Australia for discussing Lexus cars not driving them. If you own a lexus, how many "real" events have you been to? I'm talking about a very organized club with lots of real events and a burgeoning membership not one-offs come check out the new GS..I'll setup some cones in shopping mall parking lot....you're talking about a club you experience online..dude buy an Xbox!! Sorry my mistake its probably more fun discussing Lexuses on the web than actually driving the cars. Listen, my good man, I know this because some of my friends have Lexuses, and I've taken them to "real" events all over. Mont-Tremblanc, Poconos speedway.. you name it.. all they complain about is how the lexus keeps "reorganizing" the club and can't get their act together, but I tell them you are the outliers..most of your members are getting their nails done..
If Lexus wants to sell more LS's they should throw in a free make-up kit ..I'm sure Houstoncutie would love it!!

About Oprah, I believe she's the richest self-made woman in the US, and one of the richest self-made in the world. The Waltons inherited their wealth from good old Sam.

WILL, you're a waste of time!!! you obviously WILL never get it. Go back and re-read my post or ask someone to explain it to you.
1) The reference to the make-up kit is the Lexus demographics: women or certain men!! doesn't say
anything about Lexus needing help to sell cars (in fact I think Lexus has one of the best if not the best marketing, and certainly knows how to market their cars.)
2) If you still do not understand the difference between an autoclub that actually drives cars and one that spends time discussing them online..I rest my case!! I doubt that you own a Lexus, but if you do..you'll make a perfect case study for what I've been saying..

Huu76, if you think spending time with fellow car enthusiasts at an event is posing, I'm forced to ask if you've ever been to the events of "any" car club?? Have you, and if so which one, and can you describe what happened at the event, and how many posers you saw there? Your statement is so incredibly ignorant it borderline scares me.. Can I ask what you drive?

didn't anyone notice that it took her 4 MIINUTES to park the car? seriously? it shouldn't take more than 30 seconds for the most novice driver to parallel park a car. imagine the slowdown in traffic as as rows of cars are held up while the 65 year old driver of the LS trys to park it using this system. isn't technology supposed to make things more efficient?

oh right, and the system only works if the spot is SIX FEET bigger than the car! good luck finding that in manhattan or any other major city in america.

Reason why I don't like German car: over rated, arrogant snob, over price, cheap plastic interior, and poor realibility. The last remember they did a comparison the German realiblity did really bad. Compare to Lexus which took most top spot for being the most realible vechicles.

reasons why i like german cars: innovative design, superior driving experience in terms of handling and braking, diversity of engine and transmission options, very high quality (of course, nearly every car made today is quite reliable).

and apparently the market agrees. there's a reason mercedes and bmw are able to command significant premiums over their competitors: millions of purchasers a year believe they're worth more (MB and BMW combined sell well over 2 million cars per year).

Funny, Lexus are incredibly overrated cars themselves. The IS for example is sold as a BMW 3er killer when in reality it's not. The IS also has an overrated interior, I know, I testdrove one and wasn't at all impressed. But what can we expect from a guy called "Lexus" badmouthing German cars? Exactly. Pure bias.

willis I'm not swithing anything up,I'm telling the honest truth of what I noticed at the Auto Show, and that was not too many people in the German section and lots of people in the Lexus Section.

The reason I think that Lexus was downstairs is because the needed more space than the German automakers!

2JZSoarer,

Spare us. You're a known Toyota/Lexus fanboy and I have a hard time believing most of what you tell us. I was there too, I saw that all sections were well-visited.

Also, your last comment gave you away:

"The reason I think that Lexus was downstairs is because the needed more space than the German automakers!"

Audi, BMW and Mercedes offer more product variety in the US meaning they have more models to showcase than Lexus. In fact, Lexus would need a smaller room.

"You also forget to point out that that review clearly said up-front they tested the sedans more from a sports-bias. Had they tested them from a LUXURY-bias, the results would have been drastically different, and we all know it."

Well, that recent French review in which the LS460 also came in last is evidence that these publications are not all biased towards sport, and know most of the others are better cars in general.

I would choose the LS460 over the XJ (not XJR), but I've never driven a 750 (just a 745), so I can't say there. What would probably happen, if I were looking:

1. S550 4Matic
2. A8L quattro
3. 750Li
4. LS460L
5. Vanden Plas

Different wants needs for different people, Will. I'm sure your list would come out differently. Does that mean I'm WRONG? Of course not!

Yes. The S-Class's comfort is the bar by which the LS is measured. You say JUST AS comfortable. Not more comfortable.

Which leads me to ask... why not have a car with supreme comfort AND supreme handling, instead of one with ONLY supreme comfort? Lexus fans overlook this with these cars. It's so stupid, I just laugh out loud. There's not a reason in the world to buy an LS over an S-Class... you have to pinch pennies.

This is an Lexus article, it hasn't mentioned anything about comparison to a German car, stick to a topic related to this article and not bash each other, some Lexus fan boys are too die hard, don't be because you won't get a reward from Lexus....LS is a great luxury car for value and putting it on the show is a good idea for advertisement(it has generated a lot of user comments)

The Lexus interiors suck, TBH, against manufacturers like Mercedes, and BMW.
