Is Volvo Straying From Future Performance Models?

Enthusiasts will have noted a significant absence from the new V70 range: it contains no direct replacement for the 296bhp V70R. Volvo says the new T6 model partly fills the hole left by that model; however it also says, for various reasons, that it won't be slotting its 325bhp Yamaha V8 into the V70 at all.

The only barrier to the production of the last car in that list, according to one Volvo engineer we quizzed, would be developing a transmission capable of handing 'up to 400bhp'. However, when Autocar asked the same engineer which of these cars might be most likely to appear, our question was met with considerable pessimism

C30 is what? 25k?
C30R would then probably be in the EVO, STI price range or close to. Wouldn't make a for a good business case sadly.

This is a real disappointment to me as I drive a V70 R which I consider to be the best car I have ever had (I have had BMW540, Audi S6 - I also have a JagXKR and a TR6). OK, isn't better in every area, but it has great punch and the active chaise is outstanding (especially in the snow where it will have more grip than most 4x4s); but the best thing of all is the subtlety and flexibility - it's amazing for being a safe dad driver with kids in the back one day and a motorway ripper the other......and don't even get me going on the grip it has on the country lanes. The V70R is so understated unlike the AudiRS6 and the E55 AMG (both at 20KGBP more) which are 'look at me cars' - which is a bit odd for an estate. The R was discreate and surprised lots of people when I flew past them on the motorway!! It also 'sexed' up the whole Volvo brand - I agree the V8 engine would be too much for the new V70 and 400bhp puts it into another range of 'super-estate' but if they miss the uprated V70 R - with the massive turbo on the 2.5 engine - off the list they will chase all the 'young dad racers' like me off to the Audi/Merc camp which will be a real opportunity missed. The real problem with this car was they didn't market it well enough and they should have used it to attract a whole new driver to the brand (like I was). My message to Volvo - hold the line with the V70R, but this time do a better job of marketing it!!
