It really upsets me with all that is going on in the Auto World, these crappy articles pop up for no reason what-so-ever....

this IS part of what's going on in the auto world. parents increasingly KNOW their kids are more knowledgeable about the LATEST in anything technical.

what besides computers are more hi-tech than TODAY'S cars?

foreign makers had overhead cam engines since the 1970s. why're domestics taking so long to catch up?

The article is simply confirming everything we'd been reading about for the past couple of years.

Imports (especially Toyota) are having record profits. THAT'S A FACT. NUMBERS DON'T LIE.

And this would obviously come at the expense of other manufacturers. Last time I checked GM and Ford have lost billions of dollars so logic tells me it mostly came at the expense of these two. Again, these are based on cold hard facts.

what does the PAST have to do with today's TREND? which, on the basis of sales MOMENTUM, indicates toyota will PASS gm sometime this year.

yeah, counting ALL vehicles produced over the years and still on the road, there will STILL be more gm cars for a few more years.

that is NOT what's meant by toyota passing gm. it just means toyota will likely SELL more, THIS year. if the trend continues.

I have seen many teenagers who drive much nicer cars than their parents. A new Hyundai or Kia drives far better than most American cars. My grandfather who bought nothing but American for 60 years will only buy Japanese now. I had an American car for my first car that was the worst piece of engineering. My 8 year old Lexus drove better than my brand new American car.

You repeatedly mention how Toyota failed to pass GM in overall sales despite forecasts from the past "6 years". What 6 years? I've been reading the news myself and I've only heard this type of forecast mentioned within the last couple of years. And let's just say they did such a forecast 6 years ago, the real question is WHEN exactly did they forecast Toyota to surpass GM. Did you even bother reading this part of the article?

There actually are plenty of anti-Toyota posters on this site but at least they cite acceptable reasons for their opinions (styling, performance, etc). You just ramble on with your pointless drivel which I swear I'm done reading from now on. Reading your posts is an utter waste of time.

You're still not citing your sources for such claims that

If you read the articles closer you would have noticed that six years ago they were predicting 2010 as when Toyota would pass GM, not at the time the articles were published. But with the amount of growth Toyota is experiencing they are moving their prediction up to 2008. But of course that would require reading on your part, which I can guess from your posts is not one of your strong suits.

i fail to see how toyota would be worried by this, american cars suck. that's why nobody else in the world gets them. try finding any american fords or GMs in europe.

What are you talking about, Rupert? Ford is the top car company in the UK and GM and Ford have been posting sales increases in every part of the world except the US.

The Impala LOOKS like a luxury car on the inside- but that doesn't mean it has crappy materials and uninspiring designers.

I think the Impala looks like an Audi from two generations ago (on the inside). Very straightforward and straight-edged. The difference? Hideous amounts of fake wood trim and switchgear that's used in every other GM on the market.

Otherwise, this isn't a groundbreaking article. I bought my daughter a new Honda Civic when she turned 21, my son a used Audi A4 for his sixteenth. I didn't ever think to consider an American car. I've never owned one. My parents did, of course- like every family. But not me.

With toyota quality slipping to dangerously bad levels I believe Honda will dominate Toy soon! The big three have to improve quality and improve fuel mielage! Chev is going in the right direction with the increased warantee.

No Honda will not dominate Toyota. The reason is because Honda doesn't offer a full line of cars and trucks (don't call the Ridgeline a truck). If Honda wants to play in the truck market (which they don't otherwise they would have had a truck chassis in the 90's when the suv's were hot) they have to have a V-8 and a truck platform. They cannot beat Toyota just by selling cars, because it is not like Toyota has bad car sales like the big three.

Honda is awesome. They deserve to be #1.

Of course, Toyota and Honda both have reliable, sensible cars. The difference? Honda knows how to make them fun.

As you can see by my title I am a macho truckman, this Honda is a little too feminine for me (It is the biggest princess) and the Toyota tundra is too big and also too carlike.Kart1 you make many good points, I just think Toyota quality will unfortunatly continue to slide and become part of the big three. I have heard Companies engeneer parts to wear out/break when the warantee should be over, has anyone else heard of this or am I misinformed?
I have talked to one engeneer that spent the entire project studying one bolt! (how big it should be,what grade...)
I have heard dealers make all there money not selling cars but selling parts and servicing vehicles. With that said Dodge dealers must do well!LOL. Sounds like Toyota is an up and coming competitor! By the way ,what do teens know about cars! Half of them are on crack and 90% smoke a lot of pot!

Possibly, you have heard of aftermarket companies creating parts that will need regular replacement at set intervals, but it would spell doom for any reputable car company to utilize bad engineering practices. And yes, an engineer may have specialized projects such as FEA (Finite Element Analysis) on a bolt to determine stress levels on the bolt and the parts it holds together.

BTW, I am an engineer and would greatly appreciate it if you would spell "engineer" instead of "engeneer". Also, I work on 400 ton payload capacity off-highway haul trucks - and yes, parts & service is where the money is, but you don't keep customers by designing parts that fail. It kinda pisses them off a bit.

I would love to see domestic car companies once again produce vehicles for the world to envy & emulate, but lots have changed since the 70's. I can only hope the importing & rebadging products does not become a staple of domestic brand sustainability, but rather, as a learning process to continually improve on future products. I like the direction that Saturn and Pontiac are heading.
