Audi to Debut A5 and S5 Models at Geneva Auto Show

Audi to Debut A5 and S5 Models at Geneva Auto Show
It’s official, the Audi A5 will most definitely debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March - confirmed by Audi AG boss Rupert Stadler in a roundtable discussion in Detroit a few weeks ago and the company just recently launched a microsite for the A5 (link below). That is good news, but even more interesting is confirmation via reliable sources within Audi that the company will go one step further with the additional launch of a hotter S-badged version dubbed S5.

The displayed computer-generated drawing of the S5 represents our best guess of what the S coupe will look like, complete with typical current design cues from other representatives within Audi’s S-car range.

RS5 would be against the merc CL range M3 would go against the S4/RS4/possibly the R4.

no.
A5 is a 3 series sized coupe. you're thinking of the A7.

Wrong. A5/S5/RS5 is the coupe version of the A/S/RS4.

A CL competitor? Where the hell did you hear this? If they EVER made a CL competitor, it would be called the A9.

Finally Audi designs a car to support thestunning front end. Cant wait to see if they stopped at the rear. I hope not.

People, this is a speculative CGI rendering.

You may want to wait for the actual official photos to be released before critiquing the design.

It's a photoshop of the 2003 Nuvolari concept. That's not what the A5 looks like, as much as I like the concept.

S5 with only 390 hp? I hope not... I wanted it for my next car..

Lexus IS-F coupe with +400 hp and BMW M3 Coupe with +420 hp...

Costs will be in the same range.Audi should keep up if not move ahead. I'm an Audi fan and I wish they
put the S5 ahead of the game and put the rivals behind with the RS5 which will start at like 70-80 grand.

NARunnerNARunner - 2/7/2007 12:32:24 PM

390hp is not disappointing at all. rumors suggest the M3 will have 415 and IS-F 400. With the 390 and AWD, the S5 would not be far behind and will probably be cheaper than the M3 and IS-F...perhaps around $60k for a well-equipped S5, as opposed to $70k for a well equipped M3 or IS-F.

look at what audi did with the S6...underpowered it slightly compared to the M5 and E63, but also underpriced it...and publications have been raving over the "deal" you get when you buy an S6. my guess is that they will do the same with the S5, and then unload the RS5 later with probably a menacing 450hp for $75-80k.

there is no justification behind this, but i loooovve to speculate.

390hp is a pretty nice increase over my 340hp S4. They wouldn't add 140hp to it and keep it under $60,000, so keep dreaming. The RS5 will be the true M3 competitor.

I would think that 390hp is enough for you. It is for anyone.

ooooh baby, we get the A5 and S5 at the same time??

the CGI here shows the 10-cyl LED running lamps from the S6...i doubt the S5 will have a V10 if it is to compete with the 3 series. The A7 will probably get the V10 and I could see the S5 getting the RS4's V8 after the RS4 goes out of production, in order to compete with the M3...that is just a guess, though...it will be interesting to see...

correction, a detuned version of the RS4 V8

I believe the S5 will have a detuned 4.2 liter V8, with the more potent version reserved for the RS5. Just like they did with the S4 and RS4. I wonder if they will just use the 350hp V8 from the Q7 with direct injection or have a more highly tuned version of the same engine that powers the Q7?

I don't believe the A5 is a 3 Coupe competitor. It slots in between the A4 and A6, so it's more of a CLK competitor.

I also believe Audi will just offer the car in 3.2 and 4.2 (S5).

the 3 coupe cometes with the CLK and the A5...what else does it compete with?
don't forget bmw wanted to call the 3 coupe the 4 series, to distinguish the model (as merc did with the CLK, it's really just a coupe c class), but they couldn't due to rover owning the rights to 418 and 420, so 3 had to be used to enable the 318 and 320 coupes to exist.

"I also believe Audi will just offer the car in 3.2 and 4.2 (S5)."

absolutely not. in europe the car will have 2.0T, 2.8, 3.6 (not 3.2), 2.0tdi, 2.7tdi, 3.0tdi, and a 4.2.

maybe not the 2.7 tdi (it's a bit old), but it will offer all the engines the a4 offers.

Not bad, it look very sporty, very similar to Audi TT coupe. Nice, I like it.

No, Rupert you're wrong. The 3 Coupe does NOT compete with the CLK. The 3 Coupe competes with the G35 Coupe and that's about it.

The CLK slots in between the C and and E, just like the A5 slots in between the 4 and 6.

And I wasn't talking about Europe--in the US Audi should not offer the 2.0t in this car.

The CLK is based solely on the C-Class. You're the one who's mistaken, my friend. It actually costs less to build a CLK than it does to build a C sedan- they just price it higher out of prestige. The CLK competes with the 3 Series two-door directly.

You also forgot about the C70, A4 Cabriolet, and 9-3 Convertible.

Audi will offer the 2.0T in this car, because it is the A4 TWO-DOOR. Get that through your head! It is Audi's 3 Series coupe! The A4 with two doors!

AUDIMAN4AUDIMAN4 - 2/8/2007 1:52:48 AM

I'm sorry, S4, you're just wrong.

The A5 is not a two door A4. That's the A4 cabriolet. While the A5 may share platforms with the next B8, its equipment and packaging places it in the next class.

Same thing with the CLK. The CLK is NOT a C-class coupe, even though they share platforms.

RupertRupert - 2/8/2007 11:31:48 AM

but the next a4 convertible will be called the a5 convertible, the A5 is literally an A4 coupe with a new badge. Different styling to distinguish, yes, but nothing else. the CLK in europe is available with all bar 1 of the engines from the C class. (No 180 komp). same platform, slightly more equipment and a higher price, yes, but nothing else.
And just because mercs are expensive, doesn't place the CLK in the next class. the CLK competes directly with the 3 series coupe/convertible and soon the A5 coupe/convertible.
Are you telling us people don't cross shop the clk, 3 coupe and a5? those are the absolutle direct competitiors! If not, please tell us, what does the CLK compete with? The 6 series? What is this magical "next class"?
making the number of the car 1 bigger doesn't make it any bigger. ie a CLS is just a coupe-like E class, a CL a coupe S class. And the A5 is a coupe A4.

No, I'm serious, YOU ARE WRONG.

The A4 Cabriolet is being replaced by the A5 Cabriolet! IT IS THE TWO-DOOR VERSION OF THE NEXT A4!!!

There will be no A4 Cabriolet. Gone. The A5 is its successor.

The A4 Cabriolet will not be on the market any more. The A5 will be the two-door A4.

Let's see how many times I can say it before you realize that you're wrong?

because merc can, and does. they could make it cheaper i'm sure, but they don't need to.

Regardless, I'll never think of the CLK as a C coupe. Same way I'll never think of the A5 as an A4 coupe. But that's just me.

Also, the A5 will be larger than the A4. It will be almost the size of an A6.

The new longitudinal engine placement and RWD bias on this coupe and next B8 will really be a killer.
