No one disputes that the earth is warming. The dispute rests in the assumption that man is causing said warming. Historically, the earth has had long periods of warming and cooling, long before the advent of cars, factories, etc. In fact, during the 40's and 50's, which saw a huge spike in industrialization and the # of automobiles, the earth actually cooled during this period. This would make you doubt whether the warming we feel now is man made or not. The scary part is that fools such as Al Gore go running around the globe trying to scare us to death when the science on this matter isn't even settled yet. Some very distinguished scientisits from Harvard and MIT refute much of what Gore is trying to sell. Yet Gore refuses to debate this issue with anyone. I wonder why? Remember folks, in the 1970's Newsweek had a cover story with a doomsday scenario called "The Coming Ice Age" which predicted a global cooling period which would destroy crops and cause famine so how can you be surprised when people today laugh at Newsweek cover stories trying to sell doomsday scenarios about global warming. And it is downright troubling to hear gloabl warming converts lambasting global warming critics for not getting on board to join the doomsday team. To hear scientists deride other scientists for being skeptics is scary. The whole point of the study of science is for people to be skeptical of assumed truths. I can just imagine scientists arguing way back when that all scientists must conform to the belief that the earth is flat. Well, there was one skeptic back in the day that resisted that assumed truth. Thankfully.

Just to remind everyone, the UN council on global warming recently upgraded it to "very likely" that global warming is man made. that means they are 90% sure.

We were also told that Katrina in 2005 was due to global warming and going forward we were going to see even more hurricanes of a more ferocious variety yet 2006 was one of the quietest hurricane seasons ever. During the largest increase in CO2 pollution during the industrialization in the 1940's and 1950's, the earth cooled instead of warmed. Weird, no? And every single model used to predict future warming has been proven inaccurate. As technology gets better, scientists are using more accurate tools to monitor the atmosphere. And guess what has happened? As the
tools recording climate change have gotten more accurate, the dire predictions regarding global warmed have been discounted. Even the UN report acknowledges that the silly hysteria spouted by Gore about sea levels rising 20 feet and swallowing cities whole is a bunch of bunk. What is really chilling is the Orwellian tendencies of the environmental left to ostracize and demonize reputable scientists, such as those from Harvard and MIT, who dare disagree with their hysteria. The entire field of Science has always been and always will be based on skepticism. Skeptcism is good for Science and for the world because what we know today and what we think we know about tomorrow will be disproven in the future to our benefit. Ok so lets breakdown the science behind climate change. The climate is incredibly complex there are many many factors that contribute to it, ocean curents, vegetation levels, cloud cover, energy absorbed and reflected from the sun amd also greenhouse gases. By greenhouse gases I refer to those gases that have the property to trap heat.
The climate is so complex that even the most powerful super computers that exist stil lcant reliably predict the weather a week in the future. This means that any predictions we make on the climate in the future are based on generalizations and trends. Of course this means there is much room for error.
Why do we think human actions are causing global warming? Well if you think back to your school days its to do with the carbon cycle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_cycle). That big diagram with trees, cows farting, fires and dead animals decaying. Well part of the cycle includes fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are known as a "carbon sink" that means they store large amounts of carbon outside of the cycle, thus helping to maintain the balance of CO2 in the atmosphere. Well since the the Industrial revolution we have been burning fossil fuels at steadily increasing rates resulting in you guessed it in an increase of CO2 being released (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Global_Carbon_Emission_by_Type.png)
Some of this carbon is absorbed by plants and some is released into the atmosphere. The result is an increase in the level of CO2 in the atmosphere. (http://www.exploratorium.edu/climate/atmosphere/data3.html)
Now NOBODY denies or has scientific evidence to prove to the contrary that there is an increase in CO2 in the atmosphere.
So what does this have to do with global warming? Well CO2 is one of the so called Greenhouse Gases in that it has the ability to trap and reflect heat (ie infra red light). THe argument is that an increase in CO2 results in an increase in heat being trapped and therefore global warming. This is not disputed by the unamed scientists at MIT or Harvard.
That is the basic science behind the theory. Where the argument rests is on the the magnitude of this effect and whether this overwhelms other factors that affect the climate.
Now we know the climate changes, as you have said there was a short period of cooling amidst a general warming trend since the 19th century. (In reference to your statement about hurricanes it looked at 2 single data points rather then a trend as the meterologists were no doubt referring to) If this warming trend continues we will no doubt watch the climate change whether over 10 years or 100 but as yet there are no concrete plans for how our communities will react and adapt to this. THis is the sad thing I find in the debate that neither side offers options for how we can adapt.

Don't let people get to you: I have discovered through time that most people don't know what they are talking about. What you have said is pretty rational.

There are fundamental problems with the historical data. The biggest example is that in an attempt to prove a link between atmospheric CO2 levels and temperature, utilizing data from both the ice sheets and the equatorical ragions, these were able to be graphed as a function of time. There is indeed a general mirror trend to the data, thus it woudl suggest a causal relationship. There is a large problem with this though: the temperature trends PROCEED CO2 levels in the atmosphere not the antithesis. The question question then is through what mechanism is it possible for temperature to increase CO2 levels in the atmosphere. The possiblity exists that temperature increases a wrought through variations in the orbital plane of the earth and that they induce desertification in the equatorial regions thus increasing CO2. The problem with that is that the lag between the two curves is between 30,000-40,000 years. That is a problem: a big one...the spread of gases in the atmosphere is dictated by the diffusivity equation and those who have studied this suggest that there is a 30 year lag between the time emitted and its ability to affect climate. That is still 3 orders of magnitude different. That particular point is usually glazed by certain people and explained away as due to "variations in the earths orbit" but that explains nothing; there is still what seems to be a link between temperature and CO2 levels in the atmosphere, with CO2 apparently the result of temperature increase. Its convoluted and weird and nobody really knows what to make of it.

Global climate studies that focus upon CO2 are inherently stupid. You should study first that which has the highest capacity to induce change: that isn't CO2 its methane, which is 23 times worse.

It is fully possible that hydrates have something to do with all of this. I have been lucky enough to have both Dr. Dendy Sloan [considered THE expert in hydrates in the world, there is no paper about them which doesn't mention him] and Dr. Christiansen who is also somewhat of an expert in the area. Gas Hydrates are formed in low temperature high pressure situations and are basically ice in crystaline form with gas; these are a form of clathrate. I won't go into the equation describing the formation conditions , it depends upon the gas specific gravity and pressures, and has 15 coefficients; it is a long equation. These usually form subsea in deep water. If temperature increases for the oceans, it would induce the release of these gases from the hydrate form into the atmosphere. They don't really know how much hydrate there is out there but it possilbity exists that it would be fully devastating. Of course, then the methane would have to be combusted with oxygen [volcanism?] to form CO2. I don't know honestly.

Lastly: Al Gore is a complet

I think you are unfairly painting all of the different parts UN with the same brush. As a force for international political force and disaster response the UN has admitedly failed due to the myriad of political interests of the member states. However many of the other initiatives sponsored bythe UN such as the research carried out on climate change and other organizations such as the World Health Organization have been great successes because they are largely devoid of political interests that cause the inaction of the security council. The UN while failing in some respects has in others succeeded. However we are increasingly realizing that many issues we face today especially regarding the environment are not neatly bound by the lines on a map, meaning we need organizations such as the UN to face them.
Regarding climate change my argument was to point out that climate change is happening, it is a natural process but one that can be affected by human actions.
I encourage all of you to read "the Gaia Hypothesis" by i think it was David Lovelock. While his theories may seem extreme the idea you should take of it is the incredible interconnectedness of all living systems and how delicate the balance can be. Every decision we make may affect the world tomorrow. Since we all have ashared interest in the future of this planet, isnt it time to practice some caution?
The time where humanity can make frivolous decisions without regards to the consquences must now be consigned to our past. As population pressures increase and demands for resources and energy increase we must increasingly study every possible outcome.

Antarctic temperatures disagree with climate model predictions
COLUMBUS , Ohio – A new report on climate over the world's southernmost continent shows that temperatures during the late 20th century did not climb as had been predicted by many global climate models.

This comes soon after the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that strongly supports the conclusion that the Earth's climate as a whole is warming, largely due to human activity.

It also follows a similar finding from last summer by the same research group that showed no increase in precipitation over Antarctica in the last 50 years. Most models predict that both precipitation and temperature will increase over Antarctica with a warming of the planet.

David Bromwich, professor of professor of atmospheric sciences in the Department of Geography, and researcher with the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State University, reported on this work at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science at San Francisco.

"It's hard to see a global warming signal from the mainland of Antarctica right now," he said. "Part of the reason is that there is a lot of variability there. It's very hard in these polar latitudes to demonstrate a global warming signal. This is in marked contrast to the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula that is one of the most rapidly warming parts of the Earth."

Bromwich says that the problem rises from several complications. The continent is vast, as large as the United States and Mexico combined. Only a small amount of detailed data is available – there are perhaps only 100 weather stations on that continent compared to the thousands spread across the U.S. and Europe . And the records that we have only date back a half-century.

"The best we can say right now is that the climate models are somewhat inconsistent with the evidence that we have for the last 50 years from continental Antarctica .

"We're looking for a small signal that represents the impact of human activity and it is hard to find it at the moment," he said.

Back to the subject - I think

I think anyone who was offended by the video really shouldn't be watching Top Gear - I am not going to insult any American persons intelligence but they find it very difficult to understand our (British) humour - especially irony. You should also understand that Jeremy thrives on winding people up - and everyone falls for it. I really think if three cars were driven around Britain with similar comments painted on them people would just laugh or ignore it.

Now I would suggest if anyone wants a debate on global warming they firstly go to a site that specialises in that subject.
