RUMOUR OF THE DAY: GM In Talks To Buy Chrysler?
DaimlerChrysler is rumored to be talking with General Motors about a possible sale of the Chrysler group, according to the Detroit News. Citing company sources, the article alleged that talks were currently in full swing but are still at an early stage.

The report came the same day that Chrysler announced its massive restructuring and recovery plan that it hopes will turnaround the $1.47 billion loss it suffered last year.

WHAT?

That would turn the American auto industry upside-down! As if things aren't bad enough!

This shouldn't happen. Chrysler's cars would no longer be Chryslers, and GM really DOES NOT NEED ANOTHER BRAND RIGHT NOW. This is worse than GM thinking of buying Lotus.

If they can't keep Chevy with the rest, what makes them think they can work wonders with Chrysler?

I think a merger between the two would be slightly more likely- a buy-out would be a disaster. It would also then be the "Big 2." Weird.

I hate rumors....

Chrysler needs way more than a make over from anyone. If it is sold off the purchasing party would be well over their heads in how to fix it.

I think Chrysler doesn't want to be sold and loose access to the MB parts bin. They will try everything to say with MB

If this rumor turns out to be true, this is what is known as "the blind leading the blind".

Why this is such a good idea! You'd have a bigger company that can't sell cars! What a great idea!

lol!!! GM can barely sell cars and buying Chrysler makes no sense for them.
In fact the real purchasers might be !!!
a) A private investment group. Most Likely!
b) A cash rich tier 1 Manufacturer with a history of buying other car companies. Would have said Renault-Nissan, but they are bleeding right now. VW is the same boat and BMW has burnt itself on Rover to badly to try it again. Plus Toyota/Honda do not buy external companies.
c) Tier 2/3 manufactorer with stupid money available .. Umm maye Chery or SAIC ? :)
Maybe even Hyundai !!! but they are currently on a Hold pattern as theur CEO is getting screwed over by the SK Roh administration.

GM has enough on thier plate, they can't possibly absorb Chrysler. This must be a move to get thier stock price moving.

GM can buy Chrysler for the brands it has. Then GM can sell cars according to brand and target market instead of all brands targeting all markets at the same time killing each other. I'm guessing Gm has a long term strategy up their sleeves. A very long term maybe?
