Porsche Rules Out Diesel Engines And Focuses on Hybrids

I'm not suprised. Engine sound, weight and driving style of diesels don't go with Porsche's philosphy.
Not saying diesels are noisy or clattery, but porsches have always been renouned for engine note, and a diesel can't offer a great one at the moment.

Good decision Porsche!

Diesels are not hi-revving and lacks the "soul" that Porsche values so much. Yes, Audi has successfully run high performance diesel race cars and so forth, but to stick a diesel in the rear of a 911 or Boxster is a whole other matter.

On the other hand, the Cayenne is an SUV, so it should not matter that this car is not high revving. Porsche can license some of Audi's great diesel technology, but maybe they see hybrids as a better way to get more power output a la Lexus? We'll see if it's a wise move in 5 years.

I think diesels have a soul as much as anything else. Just ask a 300D owner how much it would take to rip the car from his fingers... I actually think diesel would be a better direction for their SUV but perhaps more manufactures should recognize cars like the EV-1 and investigate fully electric cars. (And include a CD with a track of Porsche sounds for the driver to listen to while driving LOL)

I think a diesel would make more sense than a hybrid in a vehicle as heavy as a cayenne. No diesel or hybrid should ever be in a 911 or cayman however. The added weight, plus the way the batteries drain when driven hard...do not say "sports car"

Wow! I guess Porsche was really serious about trying to beat Toyota. Now they start copying and making hybrid performance vechicle like Toyota/Lexus.

Just remember who started this high performance hybrid first. That right you guess, (A.K.A) Toyota/Lexus.

Wow, you Toyota fanboys sometimes amaze me. First off, Toyota can market their hybrids as performance cars all they want, because a Lexus RX400h is not and will never be a performance car. Wobbly handling mated to a powerful engine doesn't make a car a sportscar.

Second, Porsche "isn't copying" anyone. By using your twisted logic, I guess Toyota copied Daimler-Benz since they're the ones who invented the modern automobile, eh?

wow, is this 2 euro mfrs announcing hybrid plans in one week, or have i missed a story? O, but I forgot, hybrids suck, and smart Europeans will only buy diesels, because apparently after 100 years of burning oil and destroying air quality, a diesel now actually goes 0-60 in 1.2 seconds, burns no fuel, and sucks dirty air into its exhaust, filtering back out lavender scented room fresheners. Isnt that what diesels do? I get that impression from all the diesel posts on Autospies. But I guess Porsche hasnt been reading along.

Wow. Your maturity is really what is in question here. First, learn what the word spelling means. It is quite different from grammar or punctuation. Furthermore, as for questioning my work, actually I teach, an that includes English. But this is a blog, not a f**ing English class, and I will f**ing well post however the f** I choose. oh boy, big bad porsche is going hybrid. didnt they ask toyota to help them with hybrids a little while ago.

I heard rumor Toyota supposely had share in Porsche stock or something. Any know anything about this? I'm down grading Porsche, that is why I'm asking if it true. Anyone here know something about that?

Now all top gun in the Auto business is copying Toyota/Lexus. Heck if I was in the Auto business I will jump on the Toyota/Lexus bandwagon as well.

Until that bandwagon would crash and stop, and everyone would be getting off it, just you looking around without knowing what the hell has happened. Toyota is just about to fall, really hard! Their reliablity is slipping, and their designs are as ugly as ever. Toyota will fall, mark my words..

I've said it many times before, and people HATE me for it, but Porsche could build the best performing 911 ever by getting rid of the of the front drivetrain in the C4/C4S/Turbo and replacing it with a set of motor/generators. It would take driving control and efficiency to a whole new level. I'll bet this idea is on their drawing boards right now.

I know, I know, now I get the thumbs down for promoting progress and daring to imply that technology from a "whimpy" hybrid could improve performance for Porsche. Doesn't matter to me, I'm a longtime Porsche OWNER and PCA member. Are you?

Too many hypocrites here on Auto spies,I remember all the German fanboys were all against hybrid technology,but now that a performance car company like Porsche want to start building hybrid vehicles,they are all for it!!
Lexus hybrid are better performing than a coventional engine,contrary to what Bill may say about Lexus,one example is the GS450h which kills many german V8s in acceleration!!!
