Agree with you, JMR, and this is something I forgot to lecture Mr. Papi about.

Lexus is not in the same league as a Bentley or a Rolls-Royce. It is amazing that these Lexus fanboys seem to think the advanced technology in the LS600h will "automatically" make the car prestigeous. Um...NO.

Prestige is earned through time, through motorsport success, classic cars (a testimony to the time one has been around), innovation etc. Lexus has virtually none of this. The European brands kill Lexus in terms of prestige. I'd go as far to say that brands like Fiat, Citroen or Lancia have more prestige than Lexus. Why? Because they've been around for a longer time and they have produced some fancy cars, sports cars, enjoyed motorsport success etc. Heck, even Skoda has more heritage than Lexus.

Papi, your comments are bordering on "retardedness". Lexus build quality is good, but so are those of the competition. Also, the Mercedes S class has often been cited as being slightly more comfortable than the Lexus LS as well as being more sporty. I don't know about you, but that is a great compromise.

Also, have a look at the Mercedes S450 vs Lexus LS460 comparison. The Mercedes won and the reasons Autobild gave seem pretty realistic.

The LS is a great car, but it is hardly the best luxury car in the world. Poor braking qualities, a load capacity that is a joke and short maintenance intervals aren't exactly found on a world class luxury sedan. The S class doesn't have these faults, hence it won the comparison. Read all about it here:

Don't think for one second that just because Jeremy said it's good enough to compare to the RR it is a winner. As good as the LS is it is out of the leagues of RR, Bentley, and Maybach. Like you said Lexus needs more time to be successful. Fair enough, but don't go saying it can go leap from it's own competitive market into the ultra-luxury market.

If it's an MB Maybach, then what about the LS Maybach? isn't that what the main point was? For Lexus to build a more affordable version of a ultra-luxury sedan with the Maybach look? I don't know about you guys but IMO the LS tries to mimic the Maybach with the whole rear seating area. I don't think i'm blind either. The LS is a nice car but there will always be the line drawn between innovator and imitator. No need to flame war this as we all know it will end with no final result.

There are also a number of hand-made devices inside the S-Class such as the dash clock for example or the seats. That's right, the seats. I could go on, but you get the point.

And stop comparing Lexus to Bentley, Rolls Royce or Maybach. They don't even compare. Bentley, Rolls Royce and Maybach have more prestige and image than Lexus could ever dream about, so shut it.

Funny, when Jeremy Clarkson praised the S-Class, all you Lexus whiners were screaming " He is so Euro bias...", and now, all of a sudden, he praises the LS and you Lexus fanboys love him? Know what? You KIDS are retarded.

--------------------------

more luxurious? what ARE YOU an IDIOT? just by saying 'so Lexus made the rear seat more luxurious with massage options etc' you clearly indirectly admitted that Lexus is mimicking Maybach. Another thing is, as nice as the Lexus interior may be, it is no ultra-luxury sedan. The fact of the matter is, the LS is a S-class, 7, A8, etc competitor. Don't get ahead of yourself and think it can compete with the exclusive brands. Sure luxury is subjective but if you think the much cheaper LS is an ultra luxury contender then you have it all wrong.

Don't forget what company was first fitted with the first ABS, first 3 point seat belt, first SAT-NAV. So don't even begin to think Lexus is the first to innovate things. Also another thing is people who want a Phantom may not need all that technology pumped into it's cars. Simplicity sometimes works better than having a million buttons on its interior. That does not make a luxury car a luxury car. You think a futuristic look is luxury? you are a fool that needs to get your head out of the gutter kiddo and stop dreaming.

Lexus IMO is a good brand. But die hard fans like you ruin the reputation of a Lexus fan making them look like posers who get too ahead of themselves. You got too much confidence there buddy.

You should really think twice before you call someone an idiot because if i'm not mistaken the majority of our posts here have - boosts. and mine are far superior than yours. Funny thing is, I actually like Lexus, but i'm a Merc fan as well. Im an avid car fan that's what I am. I enjoy all works of art from all brands. All cars have pros and cons so they will never be perfect. Styling & luxury is subjective. You on the other hand you got it all twisted up in your pea brain. Read what these posters here have to say in response to your postings. Go back to your drawing board and rethink what to write. I pray to god that it is something intelligent next time.

Some here have been writing checks that their brains can't cash.

On one of the other threads here I attempted to be well, diplomatic by saying that the LS and the Rolls Royce share "design cues". That of course is a load of crap, a raft and a $100 million yacht also chare design cues.

This has gone far enough, the Ls is way out of is depth. It is so much so that when the comparisons began it instantly drown and now its bloated carcass in now being hauled out of he swamp for identification. Comparisons between it and the LS are simple lunacy; little more than people involving their egos in their raciociation process and diluting themselves into thinking that they drive something truly special.

There has also been an important point stated here: those who drive Rolls Royces are not for those who want technology: not that it has none, but they are sort of Luddites in a way. The Rolls Royce still has chrome pull knobs for the vents, and the large circular wheels for climate control. Sure they don't have reclining seats in the style of Lexus or Maybach, but in the EWB model they have the old- styled footrests built into the floor. You know, those footrests are perfectly charming. Why? They represent RR history. Lexus couldn't do such things; they have no real history. So they compensate with gadgets, some of which are completely useless. For example those reclining seats are useless if you are sufficiently tall.

People in this class care about tradition and history. Prestige is very important and Lexus still doesn't have it. An uber Lexus for $300,000 won't sell well at all. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out.

Papi,

You are right, a great car will be bought. However without any history the car will not even be considered. As for Lexus, they do have history. History from Toyota is an advantage since they are the luxury brand for that company. People know Toyota so they can relate to Lexus.

However you can't say that just because Lexus has Toyota to mark it in history that it's an ultra luxury car. Lexus has to build it's own history and build the brand up gradually before anything is possible. Not saying that Lexus aren't capable of building a 200K car but it takes time for the masses to grow onto the image of Lexus being an ultra luxury car. Like you said, Lexus needs time, and I give you that. But to say that right now this very moment the Lexus LS is comparable to an ultra luxury saloon that's too bold of a statement.

There is no way a former rebadged Toyota will have the prestige like the Euro's have. As good as the IS and GS are is my mind, the brand overall is no ultra luxury contender. It's a nicely built Japanese car that has above good luxury amenities for the mass consumers. They should stick with what they are good at and not leap 80-100 years in time thinking they have what it takes to make it to ultra luxury level.

Lexus will NEVER be on a list with a Rolls, Bentley, or a Maybach. And even if it did, i'd be dead already. Now with Audi, BMW, & Mercedes it's more reasonable.

7series, A8, S-class, XJ & LS see that's a more realistic list. I'm an avid car fan and i'm rarely biased but when Lexus fans claim they are as good as the ultra luxury automakers that's an idiotic claim. I'm more of a Mercedes fan than any but Merc is no RR, Bentley, & Maybach's. As luxurious the Merc S-Class is it is not ultra luxury status. I wouldn't go as far to make that claim.

Hey man. You can't go around judging Toyota/Lexus fans based upon a few nutjobs who post here.

That's like assuming everyone that is not fond of Lexus is an ignorant prick like yourself.

Again.
Bentley or RR buyers aren´t technique freaks.
Maybach has more options than RR or Bentley, but RR sells more cars than Maybach.
And you wouldn´t believe how many options you can order when you buy a Maybach.

Technology isn´t important in this league.

That is not true. Why you might ask? because if the so called revolutionary breakthrough is garbage technology that the consumers don't need or want what good does it do? I use the Phantom for example, there aren't a lot of buttons in it's interior if you've been in one. It's still as luxurious as cars can possibly get. With leather that's so soft and an interior so quiet you are riding with confidence and in absolute comfort. Technology does not make a car luxurious either and it sure as hell does not make it a great one. You would be surprised how many of the ultra wealthy go for simplicity. Also when you're being driven around do you seriously need all that technology? You just want to get from A to B in luxury not in a computer interface setting. As long as the is what the consumer needs/wants they will buy it.

Like dav256 said, the ultra wealthy are not technique freaks. It goes same for a house. Why would someone buy a luxurious looking house with buttons and gadgets all over the place? They want it simple yet elegant with useful technology. Same goes for cars.

Well I mean you do drive an LS 400 so you should know the technology that's in that car :-P.

prestige,history,tradition and exclusiveness
example:

If You buy a Maybach You can order interiors finished with gold and diamonds instead of chrome.
You can even order interior parts made of marble or granite instead of wood.
If You want special leather, You get it. If You want interior parts made of special wood, You get it.
That´s exclusiveness, something Lexus can´t offer.

Interesting,

There seems to be an interesting phenomenon occuring on this thread in particular. It seems large sections of the body of the conversation have been de-boosted, as it where. In particular in the latter parts [minus the last few posts] have had this done copiously. What is truly interesting is that if you follow these names up the thread, you will find consistently that independent of the subject matter, they have been deboosted and by a very consistent amount. Mine I know have been deboosted by no less than 5 per post: indepdendent of its content, since I was last on here Sunday. This seems to hold true to other certain posters.

We all know exactly what I am suggesting; someone has attempted in some sort of childish fit to almost modify reality as they see it to fit with their particular view wrought by cognitive dissonance. If true it is a bit disturbing, the level of commitment required of someone to reinforce a particular view as they see it. As someone educated as a scientist I must conceed there is a finite probability that I am wrong. But it is not necessarily likely: I have one hell of a memory, If I do say so myself. I'm not eidetic but I am close.

Anyway, I happen to agree with almost all of what has been said lately. Lexus owners are more akin to technocrats, whilst Rolls Royce owners would be either aristocrats or plutocrats. A Rolls-Royce is not a symbol of just individual accumulation like a Lexus, but also a symbol of dynastic power and wealth in many cases. I have a friend who owns an old oh 60 something Rolls Royce Silver Cloud [The entire dash is wooden: its really very neat]: it is the car that both he and his sister were driven to school in as children. For him, he keeps it because it is a symbol of his family and of his childhood: it is an object to be treasured, possessed if never driven.

...I just don't believe Lexus could ever compete with that...There is no such thing as a 45 year old [or so]Lexus but I can almost guarantee that in that time, in most cases, the same people who bought them will not be driving them: they care too much for the latest and greatest...A Rolls Royce is something that transcends technology and the newest and flashiest...

A Rolls-Royce is something that once bought, few part with...it is something to be possessed within a family.

Well... Extreme in what way?

Go and look at old Rolls Royces, Silver Clouds and the like. You will find that when you look between these older Rolls Royces and the new ones that the new one is classically Rolls Royce. The thing about it though, and why it seems extreme, is that cars no longer look anything like they did during that period, even though during that time the design was more reserved than it is now. And so, to take some very intrinsic design cues off of it, it becomes extreme looking by virture of the fact that it is so rare: cars aren't built like that anymore. A modern interpretation of a Deusenberg would look extreme as well if the design cues were taken literally from the originals.

Rolls Royce has really been returned, in all of its austere presence, to what it represented 60 years ago. I said it before, I used to hate them, but I have come through looking at them and time to really like them. I do have on slight complaint, in the attempt to return the interiors to art deco styling the wood inlay went the way of the single stripe. I prefer the the box inlay style personally. Of course, that could actually be bespoke, but it isn't something that is in their sort of standard toolkit.

Rolls Royce is a car only bought by the rich for nothing more than image. it is not near the most tech advanced in this day and age. it used to be 20 years ago, but not any more.
