This is exactly how I would have placed these cars.
A8 has best interior (IMO), best fuel economy, lowest price, second fastest, comfortable yet it can be sporty, with a great engine and a good transmission. DSG would be better of course, but we'll have to wait for the next gen in about 2010 for that.
The lexus got the points where it deserved them, in comfort.

I don´t really like Audi (but the RS4 is great), but
it´s a very prestgious car in Europe.
They did a lot for their image and they also have a very loyal fanbase especially in Germany.

Oh,the R8 is also graet!
I saw this car 2 months ago in front of a cinema, it looks much better than a 911.

That's the correct finishing order. A8 and S-Class about even.

Why doesn't MB sell the S450 in the US????? They could value price it, like the did the prev S430 and decminate the remaining people who are buying A8's and 750's once the price gap was narrowed.

It has all the power one would need. Heck, the porky GL450 is a rocket, so the S450 must fly.

It's still pretty close!

The A8 was also more spacious than the LS.

You're not really losing anything comfort-wise with ANY car in this class.

"papi" get over yourself, "The Lexus engine/8speed is a work of art." All they did was add an extra gear like BMW did with the 6 speed, Mercedes with the 7, & now Lexus with the 8. If the engine is so amazing why hasn't it won any awards yet?

Your seriously lacking taste my friend if you think that the LS460's Toyota looking center console is nicer than the wood covered Audi & Mercedes dashboards. There's a digital microwave clock on top of the LS's dash for Christ-sake, instead of a traditional hand-clock.

The other day I asked a GS430 owner ( an unbaised lexus fan ) if he would think of buying the Lexus LS460. He told me that if he can pay for that car, he would definatly buy the mercedes S550 instead. I asked him why? He answer because it does everything better and its a mercedes. And thats a lexus owner and fan!

Interesting the LS cost more than the German cars in Europe. hmmm.

One think caught my eye that I disagree with, German cars have better engine/transmissions than the Lexus? I honesly would say, that's bull. I have owned, MB and Jaguar that both had major engine and transmission problems in mid 50k-70k miles. Not a single Lexus that I've own/owned had anything like that. The MB s420 that I had, the trasmission was rebuilt at 60k miles. The Jaquar the head cracked and had to be replaced in around 70k miles. I have owned Lexus's that went way over 200k with the same original engine and transmission.

So having Lexus listed after an Audi and MB in that regard is nothing but bull shit.

Well, I got an Audi up to 175.000 miles on it, on the worst streets you can find in europe .. the only thing I had to replace was tires, shocks(quite often) and once the clutch. Had the car since brand new. No engine problems, no major problems whatsoever, just the regular wear and tear. The car was still pulling hard even at that mileage. I sold it in 2002 as a decent running car.

I hate to point this out, the picture of the Jaguar, isn't of a Jaguar. It is actually a Daimler Super Eight.

You know I like the XJ [I would hope so, I drive one for goodness sake]...it looks a bit old in this company. Funny isn't it? I have the opposite phenomenon with the Rolls Royce, the more I look at the XJ the more I want to see the new one. I am really ready to see the redesign. This model isn't as pretty as the preceeding one even.

i like the jag, but it has the most power, yet it only beat the Audi by .1 sec to 60, and the other 2 by .2 to 60, so where is all the power going. The audi is also 500 pounds heavier, the jag should be alot faster then all of these. Alos the Audi won in driving dynamics, so how does it have better handling?All these cars are pure class anyway.

And Audi's interior blows away the jag's by far.and its more expensive.
Car and Driver did a similar test but used the super V8 and it came in 4th out of 5 cars, so its not only this mag that didnt like it so much. The super V8 is suppose to better then the XJR, but still came in 4th.The super V8 is suppose to compete with the S8 and it could not even beat the A8

The thing I find interesting is that the current generation A8 doesn't sell well in the U.S. In SOME markets overseas it outsells the BMW 7 series and the S-Class Benz. I've personally never seen it finish less than 2nd place in any comparison it's been in (if this incorrect someone please show proof). If you have this months current Automobile Magazine you will see the Audi S8 beat the S63 AMG Benz and the Maserati Quattroporte.
I will say that the Lexus LS is "unfairly" pitted against the Europeans in this segment. This Lexus was never marketed to be a drivers car. The LS is basically a sophisticated luxury car for someone who wants more prestige than a Lincoln, Buick or Cadillac. For that reason - and also being less expensive than the Europeans in this segment - it explains why it's so wildly popular here versus Europe and Asia.

My Audi saleman is also mystified, truecarlover. His dealership sells every Audi A8 they can get their hands on. (I own a 2006 Audi A8, by the way.) The sales manager says that he could sell twice as many A8s if Audi would only ship them to the U.S.! For some reason, Audi is perfectly content to let the A8 be a limited-production model in the American market - trying to achieve "exclusivity", I guess!
