Should Toyota Worry? Hyundai Revs Up In Race for Chrysler

The Korean industrial giant Hyundai is leading a pack of international suitors for Chrysler, the troubled US arm of automotive manufacturer Daimler Chrysler.

A takeover of Chrysler by Hyundai, which makes cars under its own brand as well as controlling the Kia marque, would be a watershed for American business.

Alongside Ford and General Motors (GM), Chrysler is one of Detroit’s big-three manufacturers. Together they have fought a fierce and largely losing battle for three decades against low-cost competition from Asian rivals including, latterly, Hyundai.

GM, still the world’s biggest car company, is also interested in buying Chrysler, a move that would speed a much-needed reduction of output by North American carmakers. GM was reported last week to have held exploratory talks with Daimler Chrysler executives.

No. Toyota should not worry. If anything, they should encourage Hyundai to move quicker by playing along like they were interested, and in 3 Years both Hyundai and Chrysler will be on life-support. Great way to mitigate Hyundai's recent surge. I wonder why GM is having talks with Chrysler when they're still struggling to figure out how to tie their own shoelaces? This is like a 700lb Sumo wrestler trying to teach another Sumo wrestler how to ballet dance on a tightrope. Can be attempted but you know how it will end..

Hyundai is not anywheres near life support. They are hindered by a absolutely horrible union at home and this would help them in many ways.

So it would be a "shake and bake" opportunity for them.

True but in what ways can hyundai help chrysler? They have no experience with "almost" luxury cars. Interesting though.

Hyundai actually does have some credible experience in the 'near luxury' segment. The Azera and Sonata keep recieving high acclaim year after year. If anything, Chrysler will benefit with bold style and flair mixed in with reliability and quality.

Hyundai seems to make so much more sense than GM. What I find strange is that Hyundai CEO Chung Mong-koo can still run the company after his conviction. He embezzling $100 million.

hyundai is never in a million years ecen going to come close to toyota, and buying chrysler is not going to make them any better. but if they are partnering up, that might help them.

You can never be to careful in this auto business if you know what I mean. If Hyundai start improving their product than we have a problem. But if that happen, Toyota is not the one that should be worry. But I doubted, Hyundai need to put more time in the auto business before competing with Toyota.

I would rather buy a American car than a Hyundai anyday. But luckily we have the Japanese and European brand too to choose from.

Well everyone knocks GM. But watch GM its coming back. But I have always been pro GM. If your in business you should be worried about what the other guy is doing. Toyota probably should make a play for Chrysler. Then they would have the Jeep brand and Dodge trucks plus alot of factorys. But that goes the same for anyone . Which is one reason I think Hyundai wants them. Its anyones guess who ends up with them.
