Now, with the introduction of the Veyron, Bugatti has silenced any critics by producing one of the most incredible automobiles in history.

To say that the Veyron is unique is an understatement. At the time of this article, the Veyron is the most expensive, most powerful and fastest street legal road production car in the world. The Veyron has been tested at over 253 miles per hour, or 407 km/h. The Veyron is named after the famed Grand Prix driver of the same name who won the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1939 in a Bugatti.

Yes definately it's one of the greatest achievements in the auto industry. If you can afford one you will be the lucky few to own one. It sets the standard very high in the segment of hyper cars. It's like McLaren F1 when it came out. Benchmark for speed and great engineering. The Veyron is at that level as well.

The only real achievement of that vehicle was by the guys who had to fight the terrible aerodynamic stability issues while not being allowed to alter the body work ... at all. Why do think it was over a year behind schedule and the top speed is allowed only during a special setup? The power and speed have been around in racecars for well over a decade but street-able vehicles like this need to be packaged in a chassis that can handle it. Obviously advancement in materials has reduced the dangers of extreme wheel rotational speed on the brakes and tires, and has made possible a small, modern transmission/transfer case capable of handling a 1000+hp ... but these are materials applications, not innovations. Frankly, that drivetrain with a better aero package could hit almost 300 by simply lowering that ridiculous Cd, without having to go into "top speed" mode.

The Mclaren F1 is not lightyears ahead off anything today.
At the time the Ferrari F50 and Bugatti EB110 where probably one parr with the F1's technology.
