Honda Extends Warranty on 6 Million Cars

Honda (HMC) is notifying 6 million owners of Hondas and Acuras that they are entitled to warranty extensions and, in some cases, payments because odometers in their vehicles rolled up miles too fast.

That made warranties expire too soon and hit some lease customers with excess-mileage penalties.

A lawyer in the lawsuit that resulted in Honda's moves now is aiming at Nissan, alleging that its Altima sedans back to 2002 roll up miles 2.5% to 3% too fast. Nissan (NSANY) has filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit but wouldn't say more because it doesn't comment on pending litigation.

I got the notice for my 2006 S2000, what the article fails to mention is the settlement gives a few hundred dollars to affected consumers (not me, buy the way, I just get 5% additional miles tacked on to my lease), it provides the attorneys for the plaintiffs a nine-million dollar windfall. It's most interesting that in the letter sent to Honda owners, it simply mentions a woman who notices, then measures, the discrepancy on her van and, apparently goes to an attorney. But in the article we discover this same woman happens to be the lawyer who filed the complaint. So rather then being one of many Honda owners that may get a few dollars for their trouble, she shares in the bonanza given the attorneys. Like shooting fish in a barrel.
I forget, for whose benefit was this suit brought?

Good for the lawyers and the Honda/Acura customers. If automakers can 'six-sigma' defects out of their cars and narrow body panel gaps to the width of a few human hairs, it is just ridiculous that they claim that odometers should be inaccurate plus or minus 4%.

If something on your car is not near perfect in this day and age, it is because some automaker executive chose to make it that way.

Hmmm, save on warranty costs...slam lessors with some fees? Doesn't sound so far-fetched.

It's about time Honda pay for this. Have owned several Honda cars and a current Acura owner, I noticed all the odometers are errored on the high side. First noticed in a 1990 legend. I thought no one would notice.

I had both a Accord and 6 years later a Civic. Lived same place. 22 miles to work. Then I got a Vue, it showed 20 miles to work, and my F150 shows 20 miles to work.. all from same house and I still work same place. I always thought 22 miles was wrong.
