Audi Spawns a S5 Stablemate to the A5 Coupe

I hope that this thing sells in sufficent numbers to warrant the the huge amount of engineering effort it required.

Remember this is also the platform to the new A4. Coupes generally supplement a car line. I'm sure the development costs have been spread out. I think it is more attractive then the BMW 3 series coupe and I also think it will cut into some sales of the BMW 6 series coupe as well. Because it is larger it does not directly compete with the 3 series except in the V6 models where it will probably priced competatively.I think it will do quite well. In AWD if the revised chassis is as good as they say I would take it over a 3 series or 6 series BMW.

Still a nothing design.So plain.So Boring.

Be honest and accept/say, that BMW 3 Coupe is the king(in this segment).

no I know your an idiot, this thing is sexy as hell, and the interior blows away the 3/6 series coupe interior. How do you think it looks plain?

The only thing i dont like is the S4 engine in it, unless they bump the Hp up to at least 380-400. With the 335i coupe being alot cheaper and just as fast, this will have problems selling over it, altough it looks a alot better.

All I can say is loser. You are so wrong. This car is absolutely breath taking! Get over it. BMW is yesterday.

I'll be honest. I really like the BMW coupe design. I think I met get the convertible as a second car. However, this car, at least so far, looks very elegant. It has such an easyness to it. Very uncluttered and tasteful. In the end I think this car can no more be compared to the 3 series than an apple can be to an orange. As far as preformance I guess we'll have to wait and see. I'm sure they'll both be more car than anyone will ever get to use stateside anyway. Oh and do I have to say the interior looks great.

This would have at least 350 hp FSI V8, more likely a bit more. The S treatment is very nice.

380 hp is what is rumoured for the S5.

"jmrA480" I wouldn't say the A5 has a better interior than the 6 by anymeans. They're both attractive for different reasons. The A5 has a more modern sharper look to it while the 6; with it's two tone dash & enough wood to save a tree, is more Liberace & classy in style.

By the way the S package looks amazing on this car, gives it the striking look of the 3er coupe.

personally i like the A5/S5 interior better for my tastes, i am not saying i dont like the 6's interior just like the A5/S5 better. Both are beautiful. I love both Audi and BMW, but Audi just has better interiors for my taste.

I'm not impressed. I think mainly it's because of those UGLY UGLY headlights. it just lacks soul!

You can't forget that the new M3 is coming out. If the S4 is pushing 380HP the M3 will clearly beat it. Now if it comes with an RS5 then it will be a little closer but if it takes two models up to compete with M3 that's kind of a waste of money. Another thing is I think the RS4 is a bit too pricey for basically an A4 with some bigger rims, slightly changed interior, and the amazing engine. It's a great sounding car but it should be priced near the S4 range to be more competitive with the M3. As for A5 being competitor with the 6 series, you can't forget the M6 has 500HP as well. I'm not being biased towards BMW though, the A5 looks magnificent. It's just doesn't make sense to me if they have to make an S5 and then an RS5 as well. They should lower the price for an S and bump down the RS models to compete against the AMG's, M's, and so forth. When a RS4 costs around 93,000 CAD, i'll be looking at an A8 or something. Especially when i'm into luxury more than sport.

hopefully thats were the RS5 comes in. But your right as far as price goes, but this is how audi does it. The S5 is not built to compete with the M3 , it will be the RS5(if it comes out). if you look at the RS6 it was similiar in price to the M5, but Audi felt that the RS4 would sell even at a base of 66k. i felt if the RS4 started at 56k, that would of been better, but it sold very well at 66k.

we will have to wait and see about the S5 engine and if they will make an RS5

lets also keep in mind that a well-equipped E92 M3 will probably ring in close to $65K-70k...right in the beighborhood of the RS4.

Have you looked at one closely?
The A4 and the RS4 only share the roof and the door panels. The rest of the body is different on the RS4. Fenders are 1.5 inches wider all around, spoiler integrated in the body of the car, different bumper.
The suspension is completely different as well as it has Dynamic Ride Control where you have fluid transfer between the front left shock and the rear Right and same between the Front Right and Rear Left so the car is always flat.
The exhaust with Sport mode, the Brakes are Brembos and so on....this is a lot of change and a whole lot of engineering. I'm surprised the car does not cost more, especially when it is hand built and in limited quantities.

The S4 has never been an M3 beater. The S4/S5 will be holding the M3 from the rear, with the RS4/RS5 getting it from the front. The S5/RS5 duo is not a "waste of money." Some people don't want a car that's as intense as the M3- one that's clearly capable and fast, but not hard to drive. For those, there's the "S" series. For the more intense drivers who want AWD, there's the "RS" series.

Oh and, RS is beyond M. Their cars are more thoroughly engineered, have lower production cycles, and are usually more powerful. The RS4 has started a renaissance- now, the RS cars also have better handling than "M". THAT's what you get for the extra money.

For the same reason when a company such as Audi, BMW or MB tried to lure buyers that are more into sport than luxury they should offer the best performance for the lowest cost.

That is why BMW is the sales leader. They offer the best overall performance for the lowest cost when compared to MB and Audi.

MB offers startling performance in some of their AMG models (specifically 65 or also 63 AMG variants) but their price tags are significantly more than what BMW charges.

Audi offers the worst performance for price ratio. If Audi can figure out a way to price their RS models in line with BMW's M and still offer the same performance, their sales will increase exponentially.

With some cars you have to literally stick your head out the wondow and yell, look at me.

But, with this Audi it just screams, get the hell out of the way slowpoke.

with the A/S5, didn't Audi adopt a short reverse Porsche-esque drivetrain, so as to place the engine behind the front wheels and improve weight distribution? i thought i heard something like that, but maybe not...

Yep, the engine is further back than on any previous Audi. Audis with Quattro have handled great in the past as Caltrans said. But the A5 will be even better.

I won't speculate on how much power etc. the car will have because that is a futile exercise. I will say that Audi does have to do something to match the performance of BMW's turbocharged 6 cylinder. In some ways it seem BMW upped the ante on themselves as well. To make a vast step up the M3 will have to produce enormous amounts of torque (don't know how they are going to do it). I agree somewhat with what others have said concerning the 'S' and 'RS' from Audi. They need to expand the RS models for one - but also bring down the price of the 'S' to better compete with BMW 'M'on price. Unless they plan on making 'S' exclusive and 'RS' extreme.? I disagree with one thing that 'GermanNut' said though - the premium you pay for an AMG Benz is the worst comparative ratio of the performance divisions. The S8 Audi just beat the S63 AMG in this months Automobile Magazine and the S6 beat the E63 in Motor Trend and narrowly missed winning in Car and Driver.

the 'S' is cheaper then then 'M' cars. it was the RS4 that was more expensive then the M3, but that was the old M3 , we will have to wait and see the price on the new M3 to compare it to the RS4.

The S was only Cheaper then the M competition.
