Can You Name the Top 20 Cars for 2006?
We all know the top selling vehicle last year was actually the Ford F-Series Pickup truck, but what were the most popular cars of 2006 in the US?

While the Camry came in a distant third in overall sales, bested only by the Ford F-Series and the Chevy Silverado. It still mopped up the competition when it came to car only sales for 2006.

A bit surprising to us was that while Toyota took the top two spots overall, no other Toyota model made it into the top twenty overall.

Maybe more surprising than that, would the appearance of the BMW 3 Series at number 17. The only European maker to make the list.

Toyota always groups those two together, as the Matrix is the wagon version of the Corolla. If you go to a Toyota dealer look at the sticker for the Matrix it will say "Toyota Corolla Matrix".

Every sucker wants one. Advertising has payed off well. JK. IMO its styling (sedan) leaves a lot to be desired.

The success of the 3 series (which comes in sedan, coupe, convertible and wagon configurations) makes it especially strange that Lexus is taking so long to introduce a IS coupe or IS convertible.

MB, you must admit, the IS won't have sales that will even nip at the 3's heels for quite some time. The 3 is far and away the leader in the entry-level segment-- the next in line is the A4, which sells about half as much. I believe the IS only beats the G35 (which isn't a G35 in most markets) and X-Type worldwide.

The A5 should compete with the 3er on every level aside from the pose factor. I am amazed how many E46 sedans were driving around with Vinyl and manuals (manual is the tranny of choice on the 3er, but those who pose would rather have a slush box.)

I think it's hilarious that the 3 Series is on this list. Everyone is so desperate for the image; I'd say about 1/2 of those sales go to buyers who can't realistically afford it.

what's not fair about a list of the top SELLING cars in the US. I can afford an Audi but maybe I don't want one. (I do own a bimmer). I'm not mad because my cars aren't on this list. I personally don't like to see 50 cars just like mine in the parking lot.

So, the total number of cars on the list: 4,115,771

The top four cars amount to: 1,506,912 (36.6%)

This is absurd. Detroit....we gotta do something about this. I'm still surprised that the Ford Fusion didnt sell more. They should count Ford Fusion + Mercury Milan (if Toyota counts the Matrix with the Corrolla, its only fair).

Also, it appears that the Pontiac Grand Prix is due for a re-design. When a luxury car (3series) outsells an everyday pontiac, theres a problem.

Impala needs an interior upgrade (especially the doors!). Look at the doors on just about any nissan, toyota, etc and copy. Also, the looks of the center console (while MUCH better than the past) need to be streamlined. This would steal sales from the top 4.

You're new at this huh. Milan and Fusion are 2 separate cars. By your logic Camry/Avalon/Solara/RX/Highlander/Sienna/ES should all be counted as one. I'd love to see those numbers.
The Matrix is not a separate car, it is a Corolla wagon. This is not a new tactic. Chevy used to do this with the Corsica/Beretta.

Milan / Fusion differ only in headlamps, taillamps, and some other minor differences (their badges).

Neutral - You are right, the Milan/Fusion are the same cars...anyone can see that. I thought it was weird as well how the Matrix and Corolla was combined, but I though it had to be named accordingly like the Camry and the Camry Solara, I see how they could combine the sales of these cars, but the Matrix and the Corollas are totally different cars.

We are finally seeing it! Its becoming mundane and ordinary to own a Toyota or a Honda. Grandma's got one, your dorky boss, and even the mail man.

I give Toyota five more years at the top max.. then look for a German to top the list, if not an American vehicle.
