C7 Corvette May Produce Up to 700 HP

Geez, this is getting a bit out of hand.

700 HP?!? Even on a racetrack that is more than what most people can handle. That should be the absolute limit, I mean what's next...8,9, hell let's make it a cool 1000 Hp. Not even if I had the money!

It is possible the Corvette will do as it has always done and transfer power to the pavement 'better'.

Or the engine management could handle the power and allow for better application of power through electronics. I would guess to say that the Corvette does not suffer from wheel spin in all gears at all speeds, which could mean that more power could be used in certain gears at certain speeds, when grip is not a problem.

Or maybe they just open it up, to burn tires up... who knows.

This reminds me of the "megahertz" war of computer processors... More and more and more "speed" with seemingly no end...just like the HP wars.. Now don't get me wrong, I love it! Gimmie 10,000 HP... We've gotta realize that this is going to end soon once a company comes up with a new direction in which to go extreme. Much like Intel has adopted "dual core" and "quad core" and soon "80 core" processors as the next selling point, I can't wait to see what car companies will come up with once the HP war goes over the top. One thing that I think will never change is 0-60 time though. At this rate, in 20 years, Kias will be considered "slow" at 0-60 .74813 seconds... God bless capitalism.

That's what I was thinking. Is this thing going to be packing 500+ cdi? You can only make the bore and stroke so large before you have to turn the revs (and hence the power) down... An engineering challenge, to be sure.

It will undoubtedly be a 10.0L engine...

This horsepower war has to end. Chevy you have nothing to prove.

Instead of trying to sell cars these days they all are looking for bragging rights.

Mercedes with their AMG65. It does not sell why make it?

Instead of making automobiles more equal (like BMW Motorsport) they just make cars that go fast.

Let me explain.

The AMG65s are so fast that you cannot control it at those speeds. The m5 and m6 you can. If you don't believe me you should research. And watch SPEED channel, they had a special on motorsport cars.

I'd buy a 65 over a M5/M6.
But then again it is twice as expensive :P

Well, that's basically AMG's philosophy. Huge power, but not much of a focus on handling.

It was RS's philsophy until RS4. Look at the last-gen RS6- supremely fast and frequently won comparison tests, but it handled as badly as it was fast. Understeer buffet?

I find this quite funny coming from a BMW fan, who's cheapo interiors are the worst out of any lux manufacturer. Buick makes better interiors.

AUDIMAN4, that was uncalled for. The 6, 7 and X5 are all beautifully crafted on the inside... and in fact, I'd say the only truly unattractive/cheaply-made BMW interior is the one in the 5 Series. 3 Series is inviting (especially coupe), 6/7 are ultra-luxurious, X5 is well-done, X3 refresh is good and even the Z4 is inoffensive on the inside.

That would be scary. Uncontrollable power can kill!

Agree. torque and horsepower should be a priority but so should refinement. As for 700 hp, that's a bit much. I'm sure with a more efficient engine, this car could be just as fast.

Let GM make huge horsepower vette's. No sweat off my back. They have proven with the Z06 that they can make a car turn, and brake, so let them do there best to top things, and go overboard.

These days the intelligent will see through the HP war and see that BMW, Merc, and Audi have better packages all together. The guys who want the huge HP, will get the vette. Hell if I could afford it I might....

ron, don't let these Euro intoxicants get under your skin; they hate anything American because they're overly drunk on their overpriced Deutsche prestige mobiles. Many suffer from the obvious signs of needing the imagery of their cars to elevate them personally.

They see pushrod as low-tech and outdated when in fact, Corvette does this for good reason. This engine is tried and true and has several aspects of technology working for it that they fail to see. This car produces all that power and still is not paying the gas-guzzler's tax. If one wants a fast Euro car, this always necessitates a fuel pig in the worst way.

The glorious Ferraris, Mercs (neither reliable) and now even Audi's are incorporating and boasting of a shock system that vette has had since 2003! These Euro guys are the real ones outdated - just look at how many say things like vettes and vipers "are only good for going in straight lines" as if these two were not beat their Euro competitors silly in slaloms on the street and track.

Reminds me of the war where the Germans had all that wondrous technology, too. But where did this get them? Industrial might and efficiency usually prevail over wonder-weapons (especially with political kooks curtailing their scientific geniuses.) Probably not the best example as I am a fan of German technology both then and now, but just looking to make a point.

(Remember, some of these guys are the same ones talking about how unhealthy the Americans are while 1 out of every 2 of these Euro guys has a cigarette in their mouth. When envy sets in, one cannot please them no matter what.)

Bottom-line is the vettes are dusting most of their overseas exotic counterparts (at half the price), much less the entry-level rides that these Euro-happy (often juvenile) types own. When it comes time to put their money where their mouth is and prove their stuff, Corvette (as did Viper) beat these guys to pulps on the street and on the track - all of them that dared enter got their Euro butts kicked thoroughly.

Oh, and the Japanese? I have been a Toyota loyalist for years and celebrate their entry into NASCAR. They dominated IMSA, CART, IRL and Rally in their time, too. But they have not had a sportscar come to the test in many years against the American entries on the track or street. (The return of Supra is their only chance.)

I have owned (and still do) many brands of cars - and actually I love many of these Euro cars. I belong to MBCA and other Euro car clubs. I just know how to properly appreciate Corvette for where they've come and pay them accolades for this new exciting product. The Euro snobs don't know how, even if they tried.

Yeah, I went on a rant here, but these threads are too biased against American entries anyway and a little balance will do these forums some good.

Lets get back to the real issue at hand and thats not the battle between domestic and foreign but about this 700hp issue. WOW!!! Im getting a mere 430hp from my new 2007 base corvette with a chip and new exaust and its fast I mean after 170mph who cares right!!!! I can only imagine that 700hp will just bring it and there is nothing wrong with that. For the computer junkies thats almost a GB of hp hehe!! I would agree with some of the comments though about refinement. These interiors could really be pushed from the point they are at right now. Im talking factory HDTV voice command video survelance and some high tech lighting as well as lets put a few more inches behind that seat so I can really use the power seat function to its fullest. I just want to lean back and take a nap is that too much to ask. Anyway I love this car and there is no better car for the money in the entire world than the Corvette. This is my second Corvette and they are awesome. Would I consider another sports car for the money well maybe a Porsche but they still look like sissy cars hehe.
