Mercedes sets GLK output at 83,000 a year - more info
While Mercedes is still playing hide-and-seek with its new and upcoming compact SUV and still covering it up from spiers, the company has reportedly set output of the the upcoming GLK at 83,000 per year, reports Automotive News. Since the BMW X3 has already had a 4 year headstart in this class, Mercedes is wasting no time in making the GLK available to whoever wants to get their hands on it.

Mercedes-Benz will introduce the new GLK SUV in early 2008 with a 2.0 liter standard all-wheel drive and will eventually have a 2.2-liter turbodiesel that produces 204 horsepower the following year.

Uhh... please, stop saying "lexury." It sounds retarded.

My wife has an RX330, and the performance is by no means "awesome." It's fine, adequate; more nimble than most midsize SUVs, but that doesn't mean it's fun to drive. It's not, by any means.

"Superb" 4WD? There's nothing different about its system than anyone else's.

Fast... if 0-60mph in a bit under eight seconds is fast for you, be my guest.

I'm not arguing about the reliability.

However, you said the GLK is a "wannabe SUV." It's a crossover. SO IS THE RX. In other words, the Lexus isn't a real SUV, either.

oh my GOD I'm glad I'm not the only one who's getting sick and tired of him saying 'lexury'...come on...get a life. he clearly has nothing to base his arguments on. all he says over and over again is 'euro taxi' and the other word i will not mention again.

GET A CLUE!

and BTW, when was the RX superior to ANYTHING?? save yourself some money and get a Highlander!!! it's the same damn thing!!

I have a test for your so called superb performance machine the lexus RX350 ... Set up some cones in a tight slalom and weave left to right at about 30 miles per hour. Then come back on here and tell me how pathetic the power steering is when it fails once you reach a certain point. been there done that

The RX has to be one of the worst deals in the US. The AWD system is practically useless if you take this car offroad and the ground clearance is abismal as well. Obviously not a car for terrain but its main competitors from Germany, the X5 and ML, are very capable offroad, especially the ML. And contrary to popular belief, many people do take their luxury SUV offroad, especially Mercedes-Benz SUV's. There was an article about this on a German website not too long ago.

Aside from that, the styling of the RX is downright ugly. I could never understand all the hype about how "cool" it looks, because it doesn't look cool to me. Looks like the Lexus designers forgot to finish something...

LexusFanatic you have seriously lost it.Mercedes doesnt have good Luxury? 90% of the world's royalty own a Mercedes. I think 5% own Lexus correct me if I'm wrong? In performance Jags are even better. So stop with ur SH** about LEXUS AND UR LEXURY. And i really think that u hate it that u r a taxi driver becuz u always say that certain cars r meant to be a taxis. MERCEDES BEATS LEXUS HANDS DOWN!So please check urself in a mental hospital. The only thing Lexus has created is the self park which is useless and the useless 8 speed automatic. I dont even see lexus with a presafe system? like mercedes.

I'd say it's much less than 5% for Lexus royalty rates. The Shiek of Dubai drives a custom chrome A8L, and Prince Charles has an A8L, too. I can't think of any royal family members who drive Lexuses.

Things Lexus has which Mercedes doesn't in the US:
i) Touch screen navigation
ii.) Reversing cameras
iii.) Full leather as standard equipment on most models
iv.) Bluetooth that works with a wide range of cell phones
v.) Availability of hybrid systems
vi.) Excellent dealer networks
vii.) Higher ratings for reliability and customer satisfaction
viii.) Higher residual values as a percentage of the purchase price
ix.) Higher customer retention - the percentage of repeat buyers
x.) Availability of self-park
xi.) Availability of 8 speed automatic, soon to be copied by BMW
xii.)
xiii.) Higher sales
xiv.) Higher sales per dealer

Things Mercedes has which Lexus doesn't
i.) The R Class
ii.) More warranty claims and expenses
iii.) Pleather seating
iv.) Long list of options rather than high level of standard equipment
v.) A charge for metallic paint
vi.) A generation of dissatisfied customers
vii.) Much lower profitability

Comments welcome.

Acura even has a 'pre-safe' system. CMBS as it's called...or Collision Mitigation Braking System.

mercbasher ...

You forgot to mention about the lexus, that NO GUY would be caught dead driving that car around. 90% of the people that drive the Lexus RX in the US are women. If I would buy a smaller SUV, it would definitely not be a girly Lexus RX. IF you think I am full of it, go to any shopping mall or grocery store and watch how many women drive the RX....

The S-Class and CL-Class both have "Dynamic Rear Monitors" (backup cameras) as optional equipment, but I believe it's standard on the 600 models.

They don't need touch-screen... Mercedes was asked why they didn't develop a touch screen, and it wouldn't have been able to integrate all the car's features into one interface. The COMAND's software is quite attractive, BTW.

The IS, ES, GS, and RX all have standard cloth. I'd rather have vinyl seating-- also known as MB Tex (C, CLK, E) --than cloth.

The Mercedes phone system makes up for the types of phones it connects with. In fact, you can connect it to ANY Bluetooth phone, you just have to get a specific dock. The system works flawlessly, however.

Mercedes has diesels available on three models as opposed to Lexus's three hybrids, so it's pretty even here. And, the ML/E diesels get better mileage than their RX/GS counterparts. GS has better performance than E, but other than fuel economy, it suffers with a tiny trunk. The ML320 CDI has both better performance and better gas mileage than RX400h.

Since when do ratings matter? It's the experience the OWNER has with his/her car that matters.

Again, retention? Why does that matter?

SELF-PARK. LOL. Fine, Mercedes has another useless feature, Night Vision Assist. And it's available on more than just one car.

There haven't been any formal comparisons, but in tests, the S550's seven-speed has been said to be one of the smoothest autos on the market, with nearly indetectable shifting. LS hasn't recieved the same praise. Also, the seven-speed is now available on EVERY RWD CAR in Mercedes's lineup, as well as all the AWD SUVs and AWD S-Class.

SALES. Nobody says, "Oh, this car sells better, so it's better" when they're buying a car. Affluent exotic car buyers certainly don't.

I hate the R-Class, too... but Lexus has the hideous SC430.

Lexus has cloth.

You don't think the usual $5,000-$10,000 packages that are available on most Lexus models are expensive? Unlike Mercedes, Lexus doesn't offer any stand-alone features- you just have to buy them in a huge bundle. Not necessarily a good thing.

The metallic paint charge isn't on every model, and Lexus charges for high-end stereos that are standard on almost every Mercedes model.

I think we'll be satisfied if we get an S550 4Matic to replace the RX330 next year. If we're not, we'll get rid of it, but I don't see that happening.

I'm sure it will sell well, but the GL looks funky when shrunken down.

I would think an ML would look better at the "K" size.

that's the name everyone assumed for it, but i'm not so sure what the reaction would be to a Mercedes MLK. successful name for a highway (named after a person)...but not so much for a car...
