OK I'm an occasional BMW fan. However this interior is dreadful and uninspired - it looks like a copy of a Honda Accord interior from the 1980s. Couldn't the 1 series please be more creative, colorful and surprising?

When is the 1 series coming to the U.S.?

Interior looks very nice and the car itself should be fun.

All you Lexus fans compare anything and everything to your beloved Lexus. Why don't you guys find a starting point between two cars that are competitors?

I've got it! Bear with me, you know what lexus famboys remind me of... they remind me of fascists. Wikipedia says this... "Anti-individualistic, the fascist conception of life stresses the importance of [Lexus] and accepts the individual only in so far as his interests coincide with those of [Lexus]"
Think about it, just about all the vocal lexus fans on this site hate anything that isn't a lexusand in they same breath glorify lexus, always. They say "That design sucks, lexus goes it better" all the time. You guys are more passinate preachers than the Mormons who come to my door. All these lexus guys want to do is create followers, not working on me, really its a turn off to your cars. Bugs me that you guys can't appreciate any other car, any other company, any other design, or anything. So as you guys have seem to have perverted the word Luxury into "Lexury" i am gonna step out on a limb and change Fascist's to "Lexists" and thats what i will call you guys. I'll take your hate mail now.

You could use the same argument against all the Lexus haters too.

When the hell will you people understand the following:

The amount of German-only folks and rabid Lexus fans are pretty equal on this site.

In terms of performance and demographics, I think some of the Scion models are more comparable to the 1-series.

i'm sure it's coming soon. it's already available in mexico and i think canada as well. i heard of ppl sighting a 1-series in san diego because ppl sometimes drive their cars over from mexico.

but i'm sure bmw is introducing the 5-door variant of the 1-series here in the states soon because last week i saw a unbadged 5-door 1-series driving completely unmasked on the 405 in the southern california orange county region. it lost its bmw roundel on the back and hood and wheel caps, but it's no doubt a 1-series. it looked okay, not great but it was my first time seeing it in real person and it was at night. the angel eyes looked nice on it thought. i'd have to say the 3-door variant should look a lot better.

I really like the two-tone interior. I've only seen funeral black interiors in 1 Series pictures.

However, there's no surprise there... it's the 1 Series interior design.

LexusFanatic,

Yet another loser using the term LEXURY. Also you can compare BMW to Lexus and vice versa but when Lexus doesn't even have a 1-series competitor what the hell are you exactly comparing? The interior is not even on the same level so what are you comparing the 1-series with? Also another thing is just because something has a BMW badge does not mean it's a luxury car. In turn, just because a Lexus has a Lexus badge does not mean it's the best quality as well. Because if you did you could then slap on a Lexus badge on an Avalon and say it's better than a BMW, which it is not. So quit making Lexus look so bad with your moronic comments.

By the way it's Luxury not Lexury. But I mean since Lexus is the leader in the Lexury segment it is the benchmark. BMW, Audi, and Mercedes are in the luxury category, don't know what planet you're from.

Next time compare something in the same class at least so you're dumb comments won't look so bad.

i was just saying what i saw, which was a 5-door 1-series on the freeway. you can interpret the sighting of the 5-door variant any way you want. but i really believe and am willing to bet that they will bring the 5-door 1-series to the states, just because i saw one on the road here. it coulda been a 120i 120d 130i or 135i or whatever. but i just think they're definitely thinking of certain possibilities by testing it here in socal.

i'd have to disagree about it being an enthusiast's car though. the z4 and the z3 m coupe are both more powerful, lighter and better balanced (with the driver sitting further back towards the rear wheels) than what the 1-series can ever become. the z4 m coupe is the modern interpretation of the e30 m3 imo.

don't settle for anything less than the m badge.

Not all cars have the pillow-stuffed seats of the LS460 and S550. This is more of a sporty car, hence its sporty seats.

The 1-Series does not compete with the Corolla at all. The 1-Series is a sports sedan with a hue of luxury behind it while the Toyota Corolla is an affordable economy car with no sporting pretensions.

And in another post, you claim that "BMW is cheapening their image". If you know anything at all about cars, you'd perhaps consider that the BMW 1-Series could be a kind of homage to the legendary BMW Isetta of the 1950s.

if they price this car under 30k meaning 335i for under 30k it will be a huge hit for Bmw... I Sure would get it...this car is a fanastic competitor to the Audi a3

Listen Lexus has nothing on this car for now; when they do well talk "LexusFanatic" I'm sorry man but your straight up a stuck-up prick is not a car fan but just a plan d1ck...your hear to piss people off and not discuss cars... have the dignity to either say something to discuss articles or honest shut the hell up

Yes, it would be. But the problem is, it won't be. The A3 2.0T DSG starts at $25K and the 3.2 quattro starts at $33K... the 1 Series would be more expensive. Expect $35K for a bare-bones 135i.

Well overhere the A3 3.2 quattro is just as expensive as the 130i.

It has bolstered sides. Look at the interior from the side view.

They should detune the 135i, heck the heavier 335 chassis with no LSD can barely contain the torque!

Just for Lexusfanatic,

What do you say when you see a RR Phantom or Continental GT interior?

I'm just curious, since you compare the 1-series to the IS i strongly believe that you compare these 2 with the LS and by what i read in your posts the LS is better, no?

Some funny and strange people that we can find in Autospies!!!

jeremy never said that, he said the gearbox was as smooth as a Rolls'. Lexus will never compete with Rolls Royce. Panel gaps on a Rolls? Just sit in one, and feel the sheer quality of this handbuilt car.

And, you, you complete ignoramus, think Maybach was invented in 1998?
WILHIEM MAYBACH BUILT THE FIRST CAR.
He founded Daimler Motoren, which then in 1926 merged with Benz to become DaimlerBenz.
Maybach were making luxury saloons all the way until WW2, Maybach power airships, Maybach were some the of the best cars in the world. The current Maybach is COMPLETELY CUSTOMISABLE. You can have ANY interior colour, ANY wood, ANY exterior colour, ANY carpet colour, you go to a specialist showroom, in the same way one buys a custom suit, a photochromic roof, you get a Twin turbo v12 with over 600 hp, you get the most comfortable seats of any car, and above all, you get a car specially built for you.
To say it's just an S class with a better interior is so stupid. And to say they have no history is the STUPIDEST statement I have ever heard on this site.

RupertRupert - 2/28/2007 11:32:00 AM

I'm sorry, not the first car.
Just the first motorcycle, carbureter, powered airship, a powered stagecoach, motor boat engines and much more.

But that's it unlike Lexus, who are soo amazing they invented adding another speed to a gearbox and self parking. Wow!

LexusFanatic - "Maybach is nothing because its just a Mercedes with a better interior and has no real history. Funny how the German fanboys always talk about history and then they have Maybach! Founded in like 1998 or something."

What do you think a Lexus is? It's just a Toyota with better interior and the Lexus name on it.

LexusFanatic,

Maybach may be owned by Mercedes it's not just a Mercedes with better interior. You shall not speak of what you don't know my friend. Maybach was from way back when. Lexus is nothing to Maybach or Mercedes in terms of History. Lexus was formed how long ago? Mercedes was fitted with the ABS long before the word Lexus was even thought of by Toyota.

Founded in 1998 what are you retarded? Read and learn before you speak because the words that come out of you is nothing but a joke. You clearly have no knowledge of cars and clearly you have not sat in any other luxury car.

Go read up on history about cars. You have lots to learn. Do you even know what the other name for the SC and the IS was before they hit the US market? If you don't know that then you know nothing about "Lexus history" which means your words are even less credible.
