AUDI R8: REVIEWED... and by More than Just One

Road & Track, April 2007:

"This is the first car I've desperately wanted since I started working at Road & Track. Driving Audi's new R8 4.2 FSI supercar is much like kissing a girl for the first time--the image and feel of it become eternally etched into you like a hot-iron branding," said Shaun Bailey.

0-60mph time: 4.3 sec

CAR magazine, March 2007:

"The R8 should at least be counted among the big hitters. To be honest though, this car could be front-wheel-drive and diesel-powered and I'd still want one. It looks sensational....Ferrari's F430 appears fussy in comparison, the Gallardo dated and the Porsche 997 is left looking like some sort of frumpy retro joke," claimed Chris Chilton.

The comparison? R8 vs. Gallardo vs. Carrera S. No clear winner, however..."Audi set out to build a more rounded supercar and some of the sharpness was always going to be lost in the trade off. But not enough has been lost to spoil a great car. And there'll be plenty who will abandon their 911s." The comparison was full of unbelievable pictures of the dazzling trio, in the deserts of Nevada.

It's the sort of car that's just as relaxed crossing continents at 150mph as it is idling down to the local Starbucks for a Sunday morning latte," Angus Mackenzie gushed.

The R8 won, of course.

In April's 2007 Road & Track Issue. the R8 does 0-60 im 4.3 secs while the Porsche Carrera 4S does it in 4.1 sec. It is faster thru the 700ft slalom and faster in the quarter mile. Both get to 100mph in 12.5 secs.

It wasn't compared to the C4S. I remember the article in which those numbers (for the Porsche) were formed. It was either August or July 2006, and the C4S was compared to the RS4. They were VERY good testing conditions, because the RS4 got 0-60mph in 4.3 seconds, its best time as of now. I wouldn't be surprised if the 4.1 seconds quoted for the C4S was its best time, too. Remember, also, that the R8 got 4.0 flat in another article.

Great car. Only negatives I've read about so far talk about steering vs. Porsche. It is also heavier with V8 and awd. A GT3 would eat it's lunch. They are trying to compare it to a standard Carrera and there's 30-40K difference in price.
