Death Of A Pony Car? Mustang Sales Plummet

The latest version of Ford's iconic Mustang appears to be growing old, and back-to-back monthly sales declines to start 2007 have the struggling company a little worried.

The latest Mustang, which made its debut in the fall of 2004, has been a bright spot for Ford at a time when bright spots have been few.

So when Mustang sales dropped by 19 percent in January and February compared with the same months in 2006, company officials became a little concerned.

"It's gotten our attention because when a high volume product like that declines as much as that, we want to see what we might want to do," said George Pipas, Ford Motor Co.'s top sales analyst.

Could it have anything to do with winter? Lets face it here in the midwest the mustang isn't necessarily the best car to drive in those cold winter months.

It's a monthly sales compared with the same period last year. Jan/Feb 2006 was winter, wasn't it.

It must be winter..'cause its defintely not the crude suspension, crappy interior , rough v6, horrendous build quality thats holding it back.
Granted the v8 is a very nice engine, but the upcoming camaro, Pontiac G8 are light years ahead in the suspension, interior quality dept.
GM, for all its problems has taken the steps to correct its problems. Nothing says that more then the 3% sales uptick it had for Jan.
Sadly, the same cannot be said for FORD.

The car is old now. These types of cars shud be refreshed or be totally redone more often the others.Hopefully since the new CEO maybe the new mustang will be the best ever? Pray!

Death of a pony car? Because of the Mustang GM and Dodge are racing to bring back their muscle cars. The Mustang is here to stay.

It's because of the weather!

I don't expect anyone in Chitown or NYC to buy one right now, and those are probably its biggest markets.

It should get a midlife freshening (a GOOD one, unlike Focus, 500/Taurus, etc), with a bit more power and a more interesting bodykit. Advertise it a lot, and it's practically guranteed to sell out.

I think Ford is just a suspense you don't know what will happen next. And we know this all their fault but still i don't think ne one wants to see it go under even Toyota hopes they get out of it

You don't "consider" something to be high-volume. It just is. It sells well, and therefore is a staple in Ford's lineup.

I would consider 18,000 cars a month high volume (August '06, source: BlueOvalNews)

I do agree with everybody here that Ford lets product go stale. There should be refreshes every 2 years, total redesign within 7 years.

i think the public has just found out how bad the new mustang is. i fell in love with it and bought an 05 and then all my woes started. it had to many problems to list here, but i had to hire a lawyer just to get my money back so i could buy something that i could depend on. sad, sad,sad.

Weather... weather... guys, get a hold of urselfs. Its a comparison between 2 years at a time lapse which had the SAME weather. The car is gettin old n people r seeying it, period.

I think it has gotten kinda old. And if the Ranger is any indication, it could be a while before anything is done about it. I know they said a new one comes in 2009, but they also said a new ranger would arrive in 2005 at some point....

I think it probably has to do with both. The weather and the fact its getting pretty common. Plus I know a couple of people that said they are waiting for the new Camaro instead of geting a GT Stang

I blame a lot of this on the dealers. They scalped the GT for a long time. Now they are scalping the GT 500. This combined with poor quality, attitude in sales dept and terrible service----why even bother with this car or Ford for that matter.
