Audi A5 to form basis for the next A4

Audi’s new A5 coupe will form the basis for the next upcoming A4. The next Audi A4 will take design cues from the sleek A5 coupe. While the A4 is aimed at the BMW 3-Series sedan and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the Audi A5 coupe is aimed at the BMW 3-Series Coupe and the Mercedes-Benz CLK. The A4 will use Audi’s new modular-length component platform, which premiered in the new A5 coupe.

I see so many different cars in that rear. 3-Series, 8-Series, LS, etc.

Overall, it's a great car though.

I actually agree. I'm not saying Audi ripped those designs from those cars, just the shape is 8 series (wide lights are fashionable), the diagonal with the white bottom is quite LS, and of course since the 3 series also uses an update of the 8 series lights they look similar. But it's a good look, makes cars look wider and sleeker. Think how much narrower a 3 series saloon looks than the coupe, even though they're the same width.

You only see that because BMW was the first to copy the Audi rear design. If you check the regular 3-series you see the rear has some triangles as rear lights. One year later BMW shows up with the coupe, with the rear lights changed to the Audi design (already on the market for more than 2 years). And now everyone says the A5 resembles the BMW when it's actually the other way.

Something like that. I'd like to trade the S4 in for a new M3 convertible in about two years... but before then, I'll probably replace the A3 with the new S5 (or A5, but probably S5) coupe. My son will be taking the A3 when he turns sixteen next year, if he EARNS it. If not, I'll probably still give it to him. (-: He's as much into cars as I am.

But yes, for me it's too hard to choose between the M3 and S5, so frankly, I'm not going to.

How much will a medium range A5 cost? Is it around the same as a 3-series coupe?

Yes. I believe the A5 3.2 will be priced more in line with the 328i than the 335i.

I'm looking for a car another next year or so. The A4, TL A-Spec, IS, 3 series coupe, G35 are all options. With the addition of the A5 it will only give me more headaches.

A main reason the A5 is a tremendous design success is the new chassis/engine placement. The engine is placed further back from the front axle, and the front axle is moved more to the front of the car (less front overhang and a RWD look). I'm sure the '08 A4 will be a huge improvement.
The A5 is making a lot of BMW owners I know consider switching to Audi.

I can barely wait for the new A4/S4, because of all the changes they did to the front axle, engine placement, chassis etc.

I agree that the change in the chassis layout should make a difference. The only thing I think they still need to worry about is making the AWD system lighter so it is not as much of a weight/balance penalty. Also another suggestion would be to make 40:60 the standard ratio of the torque distribution and make 35:65 or 30:70 (like their Lamborghini cousins) for the S and RS models.
