Honda leases FCX fuel cell car to Pocahontas

What better way to advertise your future vehicles then to put it in the hands of young and upcoming actress to drive it around Hollywood as a status symbol. Honda announced today that it has leased its second FCX fuel cell car to actress Q’orianka Kilcher, who played Pocahontas in the movie The New World.

The hydrogen-powered Honda FCX is the only fuel cell vehicle certified by the California Air Resources Board and U.S. EPA for everyday commercial use. CARB and EPA have also certified the FCX as a Zero Emission Vehicle and the EPA has confirmed a range of 210 miles.

“The best way to demonstrate the importance of next generation vehicles like the Honda FCX is to put the next generation of drivers behind the wheel,” said John Mendel, senior vice president of American Honda. “Q’orianka Kilcher will be driving around Hollywood in the ultimate environmental status symbol, literally and figuratively driving the change toward a hydrogen future.”

The new FCX concept is much more of a looker than the old one that actress got, and it will be available to the public much sooner than 8-10 years....it amazes me how little respect Honda gets on this board, but I must admit it's kinda enteraining 'cause I know the Honda secret - do you?

Honda is working on a home refueling system using natural gas, and in the long term they have invested in a solar based energy colection system to ultimately fuel the home system. So ultimately the FCX would be solar powered. While this doesn't solve the infrastructure issue, it at least addresses it rather than just waiting for the the infrastructure to - poof - come out of thin are in 10-20 years. That's why I like Honda they cover all the angles. From what I read the new FCX gets around 350 miles per tank and can start in really cold temperatures. I haven't heard of any tank problems to date - what have you heard about Honda's specifically?

I'm pretty sure Honda is working for pure solar powered hydrogen cars...their home system works on natural gas now but with their heavy investment in solar tech, which will power the home system, it will not need any type of gas, natural or otherwise. Again, I don't see any other company this far in the game, looking at the problem from infrastructure down. Will it be ready for the masses in 2 years, no but when it does arrive, expect Honda at the forefront. Does Honda's system still have problems like any other hydrogen concept (heavy, slow, storage of tank), yes, but read the many articles about Honda's new offering, and it's clearly stated that the latest FCX is the least high maintenance of the breed.
