BMW confirms X6 production in Spartanburg
While details were a bit vague, we reported back in January that BMW is preparing their South Carolina assembly line to build the X6. But today, CEO, Norbet Reithofer officially confirmed with Forbes that one of the two new models, the BMW X6, will be built at its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina.

He told Forbes that production level is expected to be at more than 200,000 unites per year. The new BMW X6 will join the Z4 roadster and the X5 in Spartanburg. The BMW X6 will have a sportier design and alignment, and will be way more aggressive than the BMW X5. Expect it to hit dealerships in early 2008.

Hymmmm this sounds almost useless. Anyone care to explain to me why BMW needs to build a car which basically competes with itself on so many levels?

I dont think the X6 will compete against the X5. It looks to me like an FX fighter from the lowered and less "boxier" design. Will be an interesting competition as Infiniti prepares to release an all new FX.

As a matter of fact, i wouldn't be surprised if they replaced the X5 with this truck eventually.

Also another reason as to why they're producing this car is so that they're competition does not get a free market in the cross over market. Sometimes it's better to loose some money then have your competition have an exclusive run at the product.

get it?

Crossovers are hot right now. BMW is just following a current trend.

Good things come to those who wait. I don't know if that holds true, I've just been told.

I long for the day when BMW stops pursuing new SUVs and gets around to producing a proper succesor to the 850csi (my favorite Bimmer). The 6 series coupe is...OK.

However, the new X5 is pretty damn nice, and this sounds like it will be even better.

i agree i would like to see a replacement for the 8 series, a coupe above the 7 like the old one was with a v8 and v12 like the 8 series

Why??? WHY, BMW, WHY?!

They've lost focus. There's absolutely no use for this car.

They should have just made an X7. Man imagine an Escalade/ Navigator fighter BMW-style.

Off subject but Ive always wanted to see an Escalade fighter from the Germans. Mercedes jumped on with the new GL-Class. Im just waiting for BMW! That would be one sweet ride. As a matter of fact, why not Honda build one for Acura and their own brand too. (think Armada/QX56 and Land Cruiser/LX570)

The X7 is still a proposition is a plan the Management has been mulling over.
Remember Panke was strongly against expansion whereas Norbert Reithofer who by way is a production engineer is a strong proponent of expansion.
So in the next six months or so, there will be interesting things from BMW, new products, shortened product life cycles ( 6 1/2 years instead of 7 1/2 years) in some products.
New Products:
XAC : X6 & X4
Z series: Z2, Z4, Z6??, Z8/Z10
RFK: Compact Crusiser= V3/V5
F01/02: 7 series SWB/LWB
Baby RR

Eventually BMW needed a more extreme sporty SUV/SAV to compete with the likes of ML63 and Cayenne Turbo. If the standard model will have the new 4.4L V8 twin-turbo, then that’s a good start.

The standard model will be the N64B44O1 engine or the 4.4 litre Biturbo V8 with 420+ Hp and Torque.
The X6 will also be the first BMW with an AWD M version. It will likely get the new S85 engine depending on when that will be ready

I just read somewhere (thecarconnection.com i think) that there is a SL fighter on the way from BMW. Isnt this where the 8 Serious left off? There way also a spy shot of this vehicle. Anyways, the X6 looks pretty promising...

Have no worries about the 8 series, the board of directors from what I hear is contemplating on it.

Huh sorry to disapoint ya, but the X6 will be against...the R Class Benz.
The Q5 is aimed at the X3.
At least post proper information if you are going to bash Audi...
And for your info, the Q7 is not nose heavy...it has a 50/ 50 weight distribution.

And stop posting wrong information to try to make a point that is not valid at all.

AlexTx, the X6 has no direction competition from MB nor Audi.
The V5 RFK will challenge the R Class Benz.

I think it looks good. It's an FX fighter for sure. A crossover SUV type vehicle. I think the FX is a good looking car and X6 will give them a good run with this. It will give FX owners an alternative.

Hm.... I can assume its like what LR offers, range rover and range rover sport.... if Im not mistaken. I saw an X5 the other day and I was totally impressed. It looks soo sleek and sporty. The future of SUVs (SAVs) is bright!

I think your right M53R. The BMW people said it will be more aggressive than the X5. I hope that it looks as good as the RR Sport. That is a beutiful looking SUV.
