Ultimate Aero hoping to break Bugatti’s top speed record of 253 mph
Currently the top speed record for road-legal production cars is held by Bugatti’s EB Veyron 16.4 at 253 mph. Now supercar maker SSC is hoping to top that record with its Ultimate Aero with the testing to begin March 21st, 2007. SSC will use a modified version of its Ultimate Aero that it produced with MKM Racing on closed 12 mile stretch on Nevada’s Highway 93. The Ultimate Aero to be used in testing will have a 6.3 liter V8 engine that will produce 1,183 horsepower.

The car has already proved itself while undergoing testing at NASA’s Langley, Virginia facility, where the car reached speeds of 273 mph. SSC claims that the car can do 0-60 mph in 2.78 seconds. We’ll see how it goes on March 21st.

The Koenig is a nice car, but it is no Engineering Marvel, that is exactly what the Bugatti is, an Engineering Marvel, with 4 Turbos and loads of other things, it was the first what I consider super "super-car" to be released. The car costed loads in R&D (Research & Development) and they are selling it for a loss I am sure to the public.

I see it as art. This new Ultimate Aero, probably wont be cheap either, maybe not as much as the Bugatti, because they are working off of the original platform, but the Bugatti was something that was developed from scratched to accomplish what it has.

Excluding design i give the motor no excuse,it's easy to take a big motor and bolt on 4 turbo's to get power, just look at hennesey 1000bhp from 8litres. Yeah, any stupid engine can produce 1000 hp .. for a couple minutes. It's harder to make that in an every day car, driven on a regular basis. Without doing a service every 2 days. I have friends with toyotas or hondas producing over 600 hp, but they only take them to drive a few days / year. And they still break from time to time.

After thinking about what I have read before, and realizing that technology scaling does not impress me, I am not so sure I can list an innovation of the Bugatti. Perhaps someone here will be able to provide a true technological uniqueness about the car. I would imagine that the biggest problem is cooling the engine. What does the Bugatti have again, 10 radiators? That is not innovation.
This reminds me of something which my professor, the one with the Star-Wars class laser, asked in class a few years ago: “Are you contributing or just adding complexity?”

As far as the Ultimate Aero’s design: a lot of supercars look similar in a way: the Diablo[sort of], the Jaguar Xj220 [sort of] , McLaren F1 [They are actually very similar, and in addition the doors open exactly the same way as the Ultimate Aero]. The Bugatti is sufficiently different: ugly, but different.

cdokecdoke - 3/15/2007 6:36:27 PM

Fast. That however is not predicated upon innovation. All I want is a specific innovation: the application of new technology to solve a problem. That is what innovation is. Innovation is not the scaling of existing technologies; it is not wrought through results, although usually it affects them.

If scaling is what you want, all it takes is a call to Rolls Royce Group plc [not motorcars] and they will pretty much build you the biggest damned internal combustion or jet engine you want.

I mean, I'm an engineer, and as a result I am one nitpicky bastard in many ways. All I want is a list. Prove it to me, show me.... don't tell me what it is, I'm too smart for that.

Oh I just registered one word in there that changes the meaning. What is innovative? The Automotive industry is generally not: they borrow their technologies. A lot of innovation occurs in the Aerospace industry. The Petroleum industry we innovate a lot.

For a more specific example; tiltmeters that was an innovation. The problem when we fracture subsurface formations usually by causing localized hydraulic pressure in excess of the net pressure [i.e. the minimum horizontal stress plus the pore pressure] to actually knowing what is going on subsurface. When this condition is met a fracture propagates orthogonal to sigma 3, [parallel to sigma 2]. Now a tiltmeter is a device that uses some internal electronics and some very very sensitive equipment to sense the heave of the earth. simple right. They are so sensitive that they can measure the direction of the fracture created 10,000 ft subsurface on only .25 inches across. The earths surface heaves in a certain geometry [a mass balance thing] which allows the direction to be determined.

As an aside the equipment is so sensitive that it has to be left on site for usually a few days to weeks before the fracture is done in order to account for Earth tides. Yes, there are earth tides just as there are tides in the ocean.

It will take a lot to beat this Veyron in passion and engineering. It's precision in the finishing is superb! Like no other. It's not over priced. You know why? How many people own one. People pay the price to be exclusive and that's what you get. It's not the reaction you get when you see a Ferrari or a Lamborghini. When you see a Veyron it will be embedded in your mind forever. If it almost flipped, that means its aerodyanamics were good, but too good, but not having enough downforce. There are Le Mans cars out there, namely porsches and Mercedes that HAVE flipped in the GT1 circuit.

And I am pretty sure they took it through the windtunnel in the beginning, to get it streamlined, and to lower its drag coefficients. You pulling crap out of the air, how they didnt take it to the wind tunnel is just that, crap, on a car that is meant to be the fastest not putting it through wind stream tests would be murder.

If you consider it an engineering flop, I have nothing more to say to you.

Mercedes CLK GTR - year 1999

Now go ahead and insult these top manufacturers for making an engineering flop. These cars were all aerodynamic, and all flipped, however were on top through the years of Le-mans.

Only on this site would someone accost you for asking for clarification.

"if your so smart figure it out for yourself!" Your comment incidentally, presupposes the end. That is just the point as an incidental, I have attempted to find out all I could about it, and innovative. Sure it pushes the current technology envelope: simply because you would have to find places to 10 or so radiators. Innovation is making one radiator act like 10.

I challenge anyone to look "innovation " up.

If you call it innovative, yet cannot provide a list of innovations, I also challege you to rethink your nomenclature.

VinnyP, do not lecture me on engineering ethics. I don't know the last time you actually read the general engineering code of ethics or, in my specific instance, the SPE code of ethics as well, but inside of them you will find that engineers ought provide the general with a better understanding of engineering [Yes, condescending? if you think so] in addition that any analysis be conducted using best judgment and facts, along with an acknowledgement of the shortcomings.

That is all ancillary though in this instance; my comment about being an engineer was meant at an indication of my personality and reverence for the truth.

To say that I don't respect the people on here is laughable. I suggest you go back and think about the intrinsic parts of my message. You don't ask people whom you do not respect to provide you with information regarding assertions: You ignore them because you do not have respect enough for them to provide you with appropriate information. Think about it. I have given the benefit of the doubt and am willing to be swayed with the appropriate information. In addition a corollary to that is that I acknowledge that I do not have all encompassing knowledge on the subject. I am open to someone sharing their knowledge in the matter.

That is quite the antithesis of a lack of respect, my dear.

This is what I meant by "I am too smart for that.":

I am too smart, as it were, to be told something and not wonder why I was told that specific thing. There are quite a few adjectives being used which need the question "Why do you say that?". They are being used sloppily [this is one of the nitpicky aspects of my character] with little appreciation of what the word really means, and says about the device. Second guessing the usage of certain adjectives does mean that I respect the people who made the assertion, it is the fundamental self-corrective mechanism through which people perform an analysis. Sometimes, I am not saying this is the exact thing that was going on here, things are hidden on purpose by being vague for whatever reason- reinforcement, beneit et cetera. I don't have an appreciation of that: it is tacit deception.

I will the first to say the car is high-tech and has some very intersting things about it which make it entirely unique in the automotive world. That, however, does not make it innovative. Innovation is the is the description, the act, of fundamental technological invention.

Lamborghini is owned by Vdub, and now the Audi R8 is being released, that has only been getting stellar reviews. Volkswagen is the "economy" portion of their company, where Audi takes the luxury segment, and Lambo and Bugatti take the super car.
