UPDATE! BMW confirms luxury 4-door coupe in development along with X6 SAV
"BMW's Draeger confirmed there is much more in the BMW pipeline - including the X6 and a luxury four-door coupe that will arrive before 2010 and will compete with the Mercedes-Benz CLS".

Source: The Car Connection

The twist that the Spies have learned is the new 4-door coupe from BMW could be the first to incorporate suicide-doors!

Read the interview again! There is no word about 4dr CLS-like coupe there!

Draeger just talks about X6 (sport activity coupe) coming in 2008 & luxury sports cruiser (LSC; F5) - aka RFK coming before 2010.

Read the original interview again!

The stupid guy from TCC made wrong conclusion!

******

Yet BMW are still to decide to offer a 4dr coupe - if getting a green light (launch probably in 2012) it will be a class above CLS, and will compete with upcoming Aston Martin Rapide & Porsche Panamera. It will probably named either 8-series, or even 9-series, and will be based on a new 7er platform.

I agree with you. This is misrepresentation of the Dr Draegers' interview. I think he mentioned " Luxury Sports Cruiser" or not a CLS.

It seems that they will both be great. But then again after this BMW wont make any other new model in the BMW lineup for another 5 years.

Could this be the return of the original 8 series from a while back? BMW stopped production of the 8 series for certain reasons. Now that Mercedes has revived the luxury 4 door coupe class, BMW may be compelled to bring the fantastic 8 series back once again. BMW seems to be able to always keep the pizazz going...........

In order of appearance:

Mercedes-Benz CLS / Maserati Quattroporte

Porsche Panamera

Aston Martin Rapide

Audi A7

BMW C650 (my guess)

I had thought that, but wondered "Wouldn't that make the Maserati the first four-door coupe, and not the CLS?"

So, to keep it from starting an uproar, I said they both came out at the same time.

Really funny how a great car like the CLS wins the hearts of all car lovers, even on this site, Lexus fans, Merc fans, BMW fans etc...
Mercedes has done a splendid innovative job with this one,and its clear by the fact that all companys are following..

Uggh, that's my biggest pet-pieve when Mercedes calls their CLS a "four door coupe". A coupe, by definition, is "a closed, two-door car shorter than a sedan of the same model" which means that the CLS is not a coupe. For crying out loud, call it what it is and say it's a sedan who's profile looks like a coupe.

Eh. Doesn't bother me too much.

They should've called it "Sex on Wheels"- that would've caught on even more.
