hey smart guy, try reading the article. It's a twin turbo 3.0L diesel. And the mpg readings... it was a U.K. article, meaning the figures were U.K. mpg, which is higher than U.S. mpg.

I don't get your posts, half the time you rag on all that is BMW, then other times you say you have one and love them.

If I floor my E320CDI at every light, not only would I go through tires really fast but I would probably get about 29 mpg. On the highway I can hit 40+ if I use the cruise control. I dont know where you get your numbers from but I get mine from my car. My CDI is a rocket ship on the highway. It jumps through holes in traffic like a super car without even down shifting, way better than any gas car I've owned. I can't imagine the BMW with its lower weight and better torque...

As far as I understand Formula, emissions is the real reason. Nearly nothing (sans the bluetec) will pass California particulate emissions. 6 other states (IIRC) also adopt these standards, rendering these diesels un-sell-able in about 30% of the market. Markets where they would probably be most welcomed...

not lexus, toyota! trust me when there is so little petrol left it will cost so much and given the composition it will have it will cost so much to distill that even hybrids will use diesel for there thermal half; and don't forget hybrids are "a solution" only as far as you have petrol to get them going....

The fuel economy of the GS is worse.

Remember how companies understate their 0-60 times? WorldCarFans didn't get 6.1; that's what BMW says.

It should easily get 5.5.

It also has 282hp, while the GS has 339.

First off, huu76 has NO basic understanding of any kind of sports/performance car.

Basically, he is a know-it-all Canadian Jeep owner who has somehow got it into his head that he is capable of giving opinions on cars.

This is obvious in his assessment that big torque and power is irrelevant in a sports car, and that someone wanting performance should 'simply' turn to a GS-H because it has a better 0-60 time, regardless of the fact the GS-H is too soft and heavy to be seen as anything over than a cruiser.

His comments on power and how diesel and performance is some sort of oxymoron reeks of someone who has no experience at all with any sort of sporty car.

So, I ask Autospies readers- As many of you own BMW's and Mercedes-Benz models, (or at least aspire to own one if funds ever allow), are you going to take car 'advice' from a supposedly 'eco-conscious' Jeep driver without a clue?

I agree ,driven e46 330d great car,can't wait to try 335d,petrol gives you great 0-60 and top speed ,diesel gives great overtaking ability.

Unfortunetly audi also has a 3,0L diesel ,just not as much power.

I love the three litre engines(BMW) ,i only hope they strengthend the heads.

Diesel is cruiser ,where u stay in the middle of the rev range,just using the torque-petrol is rev hungry,great when u want to ringout the motor.

I've been having this argument with Huu for ages, he is blind to the truth, and ends up covering his ears and saying something along the lines of "Why would you need all the torque".

But why listen to him? He drives a 190 hp Jeep GC, a pretty crap car.

Does a job, and not much else. Wouldn't say it drove well compared to European SUV's (which are much more sophisticated) and the interior is an embarrassment. The GC was a good car back in it's day (was the fastest SUV back in the 90's) but time has not been kind to Jeep's flagship, and while other manufacturers make capable SUV's which have the quality of a luxury sedan, the GC relies on its 'rugged' image to stop buyers focusing on its dreadful interior and stodgy handling.

By the way my comments refer to all models of the GC, all relative to their contemporaries.

Again, as usual, everyone gets into the "diesel" versus "gas-electric hyrbrid" argument.

These points are irrelevant.

A diesel is a different type of internal combustion.

Using electric hybrid propulsion as a secondary source is an add-on technology. This would be like asking someone if they like the Yankees or if they like combining the Red Socks and the White Socks against the Yankees. It is an irrelevant comparison.

You either chose gas power, which is 25-30 percent less efficient and is less compatible for alternative fuels with the alternatives containing 25% less energy than gasoline; or you choose a diesel, which is 25-30 percent more efficient, totally compatible for alternative fuel use right out of the box, with the alternatives containing 90% of the energy of petroluem-based diesel fuel.

If one prefers hybrid technology added in to aid in propulsion, then one still must decide which internal combustion is better.

It's a no brainer; diesel power is a better choice. From an overall emissions standpoint; from a performance standpoint, unless you compare a diesel to a turbo-charged, direct-injection gasser; from a fuel economy standpoint; and from an alternative fuel standpoint. The only argument in which gas power advocates have a case is in relation to a cost standpoint. Since natrually-aspired, EFI gas engines use ancient technologies, they win the cost battle. But when one adds in hybrid power, the cost premium would be the same over both internal-combustion types. Since diesels cost more, a diesel-electric hybrid would have the same premium over a HEV as a regular diesel has over a regular, gas engine.
