For sure. Porsche had bad reliability last year. Almost no improvement this year. It is quick but not reliable. No wonder they aren't going to Le Mans.

Quality u say ? The Audi brand is more about quality than MB and BMW any time. And performance too, if you look at the cars designed for performance (R8, RS6, RS4). Besides that, you don't pay that much for an Audi like for an MB or BMW, so it is supposed to fall with 2-3% overall .. but, hey, you talk about quality in the other two when Audi won for a few good years in a row not only the LeMans but also the BEST INTERIOR (as design and QUALITY). Other than this, nobody show the other two more reliable than Audi, so give me a break, will you? If you'd say something else but quality?

Whats a pity is that BMW and MB doesn't match Audi in reliability. Look at all the past reports as MB and BMW have continued to decline over the years while Audi continues to move forward.

Lexusmanica- don't talk about racing when you know nothing.

The R8 race car developed several things for current Audis. A good example is FSI. The TDI R10 is the start of TDI road cars. Give Audi credit when they do well and I will give Toyota credit if they ever win a race.

The ALMS perpousely defied ACO rules to make the P2s more competative with P1s. A NASCAR like move.

The LMP2 rule changes have made them faster than before. It is possible the LMP2 may actually be faster than LMP1 if the continue to handicap the R10.

Stop it. Please stop it. Give credit where credit is due, even if it means that Audi is more successful in Le Mans than BMW was.

they left when Audi entered and BMW knew they couldn't win. Just like they do every other race

Auto Union Type D Christie's Auction Update

In a joint effort with Audi Tradition over the past three weeks, we have completed considerable additional research on the race history of the 1939 Auto Union D Type V12 Grand Prix Racing car originally scheduled for sale at Retromobile in Paris on February 17. Our joint research confirms that the car's chassis is frame 19, and not 21, the chassis of the 1939 French Grand Prix winner.

Regarding racing history, Audi has confirmed that chassis 19 is a genuine 1939 D Type chassis and that it was first raced by Rudolf Hasse in the Eifelrennen on the 20th May 1939 at the Nurburgring, in which Hasse finished in 5th place. It was next raced at the 1939 French Grand Prix in the hands of legendary Auto Union pilot Hans Stuck, who brought the car home in 6th place, behind the company's 1st and 2nd finishers. Audi has kindly been able to support these race results with extensive documentation.

During our now completed verification process, no alteration has been made to the car itself which we believe to be the only Auto Union to which Grand Prix racing results can be attributed.

Christie's was delighted at the response and interest that the car received in the run up to and while on view at its highly successful Eu7.2m auction in Paris. Based on our now completed research, we are accepting sealed tender bids for a period of one week today and invite prospective bidders to contact Christie's London office directly to receive applications for this tender.

sailor- th R8 in 99 was not the same as the one in 2000, after Audi lost in 99 they made a new R8, thats the one that won in 2000,2001,2002,2004, and 2005. Not sure if thats what you were saying but wanted to point that out.

Audi races to build better cars F1 dosen't do anything for that.

i am sure if Audi enters F1 we will hear about F1 being a washed up race.

For years I heard BMW fans say Quattro and Turbos are not for real sports cars now BMW has AWD and turbo cars they are the greatest cars.

Is this for real?

All racing is tough - who are you kidding - especially endurance racing. If BMW or Toyota were in LeMans and dominating you wouldn't see any controversy with it. The truth is that others have competed but just haven't stayed. In F1 Ferrari runs the show even though they are much smaller than the others - so what does that say??? If LeMans wasn't useful to BMW before - they sure learn from it even though they don't race. Just recently we have seen that TFSI of the previous R8 race car made it into production Audi's. All of a sudden every manufacturer wants to have direct injection engines. Yet and still only BMW could DUPLICATE AUDI by putting turbo with the direct injection in (335 and 535 came well after the 2.0TFSI). Funny how BMW used to say turbos were no good. It seems that just because they left LeMans it doesn't mean they weren't watching it. Now after the R10 I'm willing say that in the next few years - mainly outside the U.S. you will see high performance diesel cars - of course after Audi produces the first ones.

Actually, there were a list of them having problems as well. The Acura, Lola and Audi teams all had their gremlins, not just Porsche.

Ironically, the Toyota F1 team is German, even moreso than the Mercedes McLaren team being British. Its a big Toyota budget, but not really a big Toyota effort. (Similar with the Williams Toyota team.)

This German - Japanese thing is a little eschew.

Audi must be learning something in racing because the M5 has been beaten by the S6/RS4 in every comparison I've seen so far (Motor Trend-Car and Drvier-Edmunds) and now comes a daily drivers log (as opposed to track testing where the S6 again compares favorably to the M5. So what's the answer to this (after you read the link?)

Mr. Sailor - BMW is actually my third favorite car company after Porsche and Audi. My favorite car is actually the last generation 5 series. I tend to stick up for Audi the most because they are the underdogs. I agree that it is ridiculous that Audi scared off BMW - but I equally think its ridiculous to say that Audi stole the R8 design from anyone. In case no one noticed in this industry all car companies learn from one another whether they admit it or not. Audi had to have studied the competion in LeMans before they entered - that is call "having sense" - and likewise BMW learned from Audi's 2.0TFSI how to develop their own 3.0L direction. As I said in another post - you could say the same thing about the new M3 engine compared with the RS4 (high-rev concept).
