Mercedes Benz - BMW to Team Up on New Hybrid

its good to see big names work togethger to make cleaner air.

Two bad join together may not be equal to one good. ^o^

Long way to go, German hybrids, although Toyota/Lexus have paved most of the road. But it got to be started somewhere, right?

Many things have to be done:
1. batteries
3. regenerating brake
2. electric motors (power, size)
3. transmission/power split device
4. power management, control software
5. size and fuel economy, performance
...

but most important, safety and reliability.

Wow, here is another clueless remark from formula1. Do you happen to be EL34's little brother? And Toyota/Lexus going out of business? Your mind is out of business little boy blue aka formula1. Do you noticed how many automotive brands now a days, have to come together in order to come out with some sort of hybrid tech in such a short period of time, just to try to make Toyota itch, let alone Lexus? Let's see the german hybrid tech in the realworld, before you start mentioning about "not being embarrassed". Keep in mind euro rides continue to be known for faulty electric technology, so nothing new there. But now germans/euro makes the attempt on hybrid-tech...yikes! Maybe we should be wearing rubber gloves and boots while driving, just to keep grounded. Maybe avoid drinking that bottle of water?!?!? And just for the record, no bias opinion here, even though I am a proud Toyota/Lexus(Avalon & LS430(trade-in for LS600hl order) &(GX470)owner. As I sit on the front steps of my home and look to my left, I see my garage that also houses, 1 MB S55, 1 Audi A8L, 1 BMW 850 coupe, and even a 2007 SAAB 9-3 Aero Convertible. I con't to have my fair share of up/down experiences with the euro rides. But I will not mention which I find better, just use your imagination, better yet here's a hint starts with "L" ends in "S"...Cheers.

Anyway, I'm sure with the collaboration of these two neolithic companies, they would be able to produce a hybrid half as good as the one by Toyota.

I don't think its a desperation move. You would be surprised how much collaboration goes on in the auto industry. Another thing is Lexus did not create this technology.

VW was the first company in modern times to have made a hybrid. It was called the "VW-Taxi" I believe. Only differrence is Toyota made the hybrid technology into volume production.

Also don't forget that America buys Lexus also because of it's value. For the money, Lexus would be more affordable than it's counterparts with similar features. The marketing for Lexus is good as well. Afterall it was basically an American brand since it was targeted primarily for the US Market when it first came out. So obviously they hired the best of the best to promote the brand.

Of course with many inspirations from the German brands Lexus took advantage of being the underdog and may have taken a few ideas here and there as well. You can't say Lexus invented EVERYTHING they ever had. Keep in mind that Mercedes and BMW have been around much much longer. Mercedes is a status symbol, it is a marque, it's an innovative brand. Lexus has yet to build up to that level. It's just known as a good reliable luxury brand. Prestige it still needs to be worked on amongst other things for Lexus. THey are a good reliable luxury brand but not the best like you claim it is. Value for money is great. Some designs are appealing as well. But it doesn't have the German luxo-feeling when you drive a Lexus. It's a different ambiance that's for sure. You do feel like you're in a luxury car though don't get me wrong. It's just that BMW/Mercedes never had a parent company to leach off of like the Toyota-Lexus relation. For that it's been a great boost to help the Lexus brand.

We get deboosted for stating facts. Must be Lexus fans deboosting. Will my supporters please boost me back up. I assure you guys Lexus or Toyota as I should put it was not the first to 'invent' that technology.

Of course the majority of this site will automatically declare them "superior" to their Japanese competitors, regardless of what may actually be true...

Otherwise, this news is shocking.

They may develop a decent hybrid in about 3 years, but in no way will it be as reliable as the Japanese hybrids. That will take a good 10-15 years at least.

Back in Europe, Diesel is the popular choice, not Hybrid. In the US Toyota re-introduced the Hybrid for the mainstream market and the German's didn't. For the more modern day cars the "VW TAXI" was a hybrid car but wasn't made in volume. Now, that does not mean Toyota invented the technology. They just took the technology and made it for the mainstream consumer producing by volume.

In that respect I give Toyota credit for being ahead, but in terms of Diesel it's obvious the German's are ahead.

1. Nobody said Toyota invented hybrid technology
2. Nobody in North America cares about diesel.

It's DCX, GM and BMW. Mercedes and BMW just sounds better.
