Maybach Considering a SUV to Increase Sales?
Maybach is going back to the drawing board to fix sluggish sales. The true sales figures for the Maybach brand have over the past 18 months become one of the best-kept corporate secrets at DaimlerChrysler. On the internet, there are currently 60 new and used cars being advertised across Europe - among them a barely run-in ’06 model with 5000 miles on the clock offered at a 55 percent discount.

According to trade estimates, last year’s production totalled a rather pathetic 280 units. Had the Maybach adventure not been quietly absorbed by the overall balance sheet of the Mercedes Car Group when the marque was launched, annual losses would by now be little short of frightening. But as things stand, chairman Dieter Zetsche can safely maintain that ‘every Maybach sold is earning money.’

A few photochop concepts were floating around a couple of years ago which visually made a good case for a GL-based Maybach offering. It would be quite interesting though...the Maybach SUV would be 1st critisized, then heavily embraced once the 1st owners have been seen with the vehicle on the streets and at highly-visible events.

It would be nice to see concept sketches of designs being considered.

I have always felt that Maybach was such an obscure name to revive from history. I understand they were working with what they had, but It was truly an odd brand to bring back.

Despite what Mercedes would like others to believe Maybach was never the pinnacle of luxury. It was a nice car most certainly. During the early part of the 20th century a Bentley would run approximately $8,000.00 as I recall, and a Maybach would cost $15,000.00, but a Duesenberg or an Isotta Fraschini could cost in excess of $25,000.00

I've had the opportunity to see the Maybach, and yes it is nice, but not exactly perfectly impressive. I don't mean impressive as austere, but more to say that it was disappointing. The reason being that, you have taken all of this time and money to revive a very old brand, but in the process you destroy everything that that brand was. This form of reasoning is apparent in them even considering an SUV. It truly is less of a Maybach than a Mercedes with a different hood ornament.

The Bentley Continental Flying Spur pretty much killed the Maybach. They are considerably cheaper and more attractive along with the Bently name. I see at least one a day either the coupe of the 4 door. Every once in awhile I will catch a Maybach.

As for an SUV, I dont see the advantage. They need a coupe or convertible.

You'd be surprised to see how many white men (professionals or not) have Escalades, BMWs, GLs, etc. with all the glitz & glam (bling) added (wide chrome wheels, TVs in headrests, tinting, etc). A Maybach SUV would be desired by other wealthy individuals as such, not just 'rap artists' trying to look rich in videos.

And again, how many people are taking their luxury SUVs off-road, really? A Maybach SUV will be used off-road just as many times a Honda CR-V makes it off-road.

I'm don't think anoyone would want to spend $200 to $300K for a Maybach SUV; after isn't a MB underneath it? Yes I agree with the poster above, they need a coupe or convertible not a SUV.

For that kind of money I would rather get the Bentley instead or wait for Aston Martin Rapide.
