Sales of Alternative-Fuel Vehicles Exceed Expectations

Data collected by R.L. Polk & Co. showed the 2006 sales of alternative fuel vehicles surpassed OEMs' expectations tremendously.

More specifically, Polk officials reported that 1.5 million alternative-fuel vehicles were sold last year, raising the number of those types of units on the road to 10.5 million. Executives also noted that OEMs are offering 60 models that fall into the alternative-fuel category, including hybrid electric, ethanol-capable E-85 and clean diesel.

According to executives, the 2006 sales total exceeded OEM expectations by 50 percent.

"We are happy to see that consumers are, in fact, discovering the alternatives that are available to them on dealership lots nationwide," said Dave McCurdy, president of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.

E85 vehicles are built so the companies that build them can go through a loophole. No point of 1.5 million E85 gas guzzlers when there are only 1,000 E85 stations with only 3 in California.

I don't see the point of E85 either. I just saw a brand new Silverado on the road the other day and it had an E85 badge on the back. I was wondering how often is guy going to even think about filling up E85.
