New details on the high-revving V8 engine for the next M3

why has the engine displacement gone from 4.2L to 4.3L and now to 4.0L?

High-revving eights are the best eights. Look at the RS4! It should make for a quite interesting comparison.

I really wanna see that comparison .. between the rs4 and the new m3. Cause against the old one the audi won from far far away. But I have a (strong) feeling the rs4 will fall short against the new m3. And it should, cause the m3 is brand new (made by bmw to kick audi's rs4 ass) and the rs4 is already on the marked for more than two years (in europe, less in US).

Again, I REALLY wanna see that comparison ... NOW !

I've never seen an engine's max torque at such a high RPM. Can anyone here explain why the M3's engine does this?

But, the web site does have a picture of the new M3 V8. Was that pic released at Geneva or just came out?

You can't get 400 NM of torque at 8,400 RPM and 420 hp @ 8,300 RPM. It is physically impossible. you would have to be making 472 hp to do that.

Anyway, Audi's 4.2 FSI in the RS4 already does all of this. 420 hp @ 7,800 RPM with a 8,250 red line and 317 lb-ft of torque (430nm) @ 5,500 RPM. 90% of this torque is available from 2250 RPM all the way to 7,600 RPM.

NOPE. There is this silly law of physics that determines all of this. But look at the article, it is all changed up now.

Audi RS4 Engine
420 hp @ 7,800 RPM
317 lb-ft @ 5,500 RPM
8,250 RPM redline
285 lb-ft of torque available from 2,250 RPM all the way to 7,600 RPM [285 lb-ft is the least amount of torque you will have in that RPM range]

BMW M3 Engine
420 hp @ 8,300 RPM
295 lb ft of maximum torque
251 lb-ft of torque available from 2,000 RPM to...

Chewy, considering that no one on this site has driven the new M3 and the engine hasnt been produced yet, I think youre being foolish in picking a winner before the race has even begun.

chewy, don't start. Give credit where credit is due. M3 is an amazing machine... RS4 is just an AWD M3 with four-doors.

Yep, the RS4 engine has better torque and the same hp. So at least on the paper it's better. Of course in a real race the Audi will loose cause the quattro will eat about 25% of that power when the M3 rear drive only eats about 10%. So real wheel horse power should be better (by numbers-physics) at the M3. Too bad it's raining/snowing 50% of the year where I live, the M3 guys don't stand a chance against my underpowered Audi. This winter was really icy ... almost no M3 on the streets; and the 3 series where getting stock all the time (Even on flat surface). Don't get it wrong, not only the 3 series, also the 5-7-series. I even saw one AMG S class stock .. on a level street where all the hondas and toyotas where flying ...

haha the vishnu 390hp 335 does 4.6 sec 0-60.. this should put out about the same numbers with a narly sound .. gotta love it

Yeah it is pure physics. Plus simple formula "Power=torque X 2pi x rotational speed" 8400rpm/60 =140 rounds/sec
400nm x 2pi x 140 = 351858 Watt = 352KW
352 x 1,36 = 478.72hp

The V8 produces more power, but is 33 lb lighter than the outgoing I6. That’s progress.

That means the overall weight of the new E90 version won’t weigh much more than the current E46 version.

BMW is throwing all of their latest and greatest technology in this car. Regenerative braking…that’s so cool.

As you said .. a record (only) for BMW street cars. Other manufacturers got it going over 8000rpm for a long time already.

Anyway, great engine and I bet this new M3 will be a really nice track car.

Can BMW be underpowering this engine? Like the 335i? Who knows... maybe they dont want any surprises from lexus and M-B..... and maybe not. Anyway brilliant engine! Uve gotta love this!
