New BMW M3 motor sound-The sweet sound of success?

Ahhh.. Nothing like the sweet smell of Hydrocarbons being burnt early in the morning ...

But jokes apart these points totally got me ..

1) Two, 4-1 ‘fan type’ exhaust manifolds
2) 4 cats
3) MSS60 ecu – development of the one found in the V10 M engine. Three 32bit processors. Can handle more then 200 million individual operations per second.

Is it just me .. but 4 felines :P and 80's processor tech does leave me ... a bit cold ..

Sounds real good. This engine oozes technology but the competition trumps it in the torque department - gotta be a bit concerned. Anyhow would hate to take this into the shop once the warranty runs out cos it's gonna be big $$$, but hey who really cares right now. Still like Lexus V8 though. Lastly - DO I ENVY all the car magazine editors - Christmas will come early for them.

I have no doubt the car is gonna be great, but that doesnt sound anywhere as good as the RS4. But your probaly right

i assumed that was on a dyno. so, yes, it should sound even better on the road.

the second clip was the car at Nurburgring, not on a dyno. Sounds good to me.

Sounds like a mashup between a NASCAR and a power tool. Remember the E46 M3 sounded like crap, but is a hell of a car. These clips sound decent.

hahaha....trust me...the e46 does NOT sound like crap....my friend was really pissed of once in his e46 m3 with me in it....so he started revving it like crazy, and it SERIOUSLY SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME....but no joke...it sounds like a beast on a ton of steroid!!

I've been a sound and recoring engineer for a long time and I know how to change the sound of something by using a different microphone because not all mics pickup sound the same and same goes for the EQ used and even the type of cable can change the sound, but I think the M3 engine sounds very powerful.

The IS-F sounds like any other V8 on the market. Not particularly distinctive, and there are nicer sounding V8's on the market.

The M3 is at least distinctive and unique for the class.

It does have a "deeper" sound, but that certainly does not mean "better."

They could hear it a mile away because they were cliffside on the isle of mann. But In terms of decibles I know the enzo is capable of far more from the factory and the same laws apply to all.

But oh yes I agree what an AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL (and new) sound from that M3!

When I drove the RS4 I loved the engine note but it reminded me of big AMG mercedes cars that are more muscle than finesse and not high tech cutting edge sounds like this M gmbh product.

To tell you the truth it does not sound bad. The engine sound is strong. But there is a hint of nascar in it. Also the in line .6 cylinder of the previous M3 still sounds much better.

Man, listen to all that gear noise on the 2nd sound clip (titled, "ring.") You can hear all that racket bleeding through the transmission... I hope they get that muffled up by September...

It sounds great, but with the low torque, off the line power isnt much comparable when driving it in the streets. I doubt all of you are going to buy it to go to drive in the mountains when you take it to work and just so happen to pull up next to some ridiculous tuner car. I do love the sound. Its more of a sleeper engine, i dont hear much bass like those of other v8s. good work bmw, hope the sedan version comes out like those photoshops!

All you Lexus fans say that the IS-F sounds better but first off, it's not even a coupe to contend with the M3. Secondly, sound does not mean it's a better car :). Clearly the M badging has a history in making great performance vehicles, not the new F-line from Lexus. Last but not least the sound in my opinion does not sound weak. In fact it sounds like a strong motor with a proper sound.

To be honest, I do like how the IS-F looks but in my books the M3 is still my favorite of the two.

Yes I'm aware of the M3 sedan in talks but is it out yet? No. I believe the IS-F was set to take on the M3 before the announcement was even made of the sedan.

In order to be in contention they need an IS-F coupe. That's what they should have done in the first place. It probably would have looked better as well. I just wished they didn't make the F-tuned so rice rocket-ish. Then again it IS a Japanese brand so i don't blame them at all for it. Anyways that's besides the point :P

You deboost me because you know that the IS-F needs a coupe to be a true 'coupe' contender not a sports sedan wannabee sports car. I can't believe I must say this but If I'm not mistakne the current SC is not a contender in any category. Look wise, performance wise, & handling wise.

Maybe a production of an IS coupe can help the 'high end' priced SC for the next generation.

Agent63 your a fucking idiot. I am glad BMW is finially doing the M3 saloon again. I've been lucky enough to drive BMW's the last 8 years and have always wanted a M car, but the M3 coupe is just not practical for 2 kids, wife and dogs.
A sports sedan sports car wannabe, the new klauss (1500-2002 models) were all considerd saloon cars (even the 2 doors) and they made BMW what it is today.
Coupe is a shape not # of doors.

And I know the M5 is a 4door but the E60's seating postion is to high. And when the E39 was in production I couldn't afford it.

Your probley one of the people that use brake dust sheilds and wax your car every sunday but never actually drive them or go to a track. People like you make me not want to buy BMW's anymore, Oh but wait I have a deposit of the M3 Saloon(wannabe sports car) coming summer 2008. Can you even buy one??

I like it a lot...an 8300rpm redline is AWESOME, but the coolest sounding V8 out there right now is the 4.2 in the RS4.

BUT, remember we are talking about SOUND. How many of you run out and buy a car because it sounds good? You all can argue about which V8 sounds better until you're blue in the face.

In the end it will come down to how the car handles, performs, and the driver synergies. In these categories I think the M3 will rein supreme, with the RS4 in second and Lexus in 3rd.

not because i don't like lexus, but simply because they need to have some experience and some feedback under their belt before they start releasing some really impressive performance autos. it will happen eventually, but I don't the the IS-F is Lexus' savior.

I figured that you would have more insightful things to say about the automotive industry. The S52 won how many awards? Its so good that they still use it in production. C'mon bring something to the table for once besides Make and Model bashing.

The V8 sounds great! By the way I just talked to my BMW dealership and they said the build on the M3 will take place in January 2008 models will arrive the next month at the dealership.

The last m3 engine won its category in the international engine of year awards 4 years running. this engine will be nothing short of brilliant
