NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: Can Nissan's New Technology Put Honda's  VTEC in the Back Seat?
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today introduced a new engine technology that delivers a balance of responsiveness and power, fuel efficiency and low emissions. The new system combines the technologies behind Nissan’s newly developed Variable Valve Event and Lift (VVEL)*1 and continuous valve timing control (C-VTC) to deliver significantly enhanced performance. This advanced technology will be available to customers worldwide through the Nissan and Infiniti product lines.

Nissan announced plans to install the VVEL system, which contributes up to a 10%*2 reduction in carbon-dioxide emissions, on its products worldwide starting from FY07 under the Nissan Green Program 2010. The first product to feature the VVEL technology is the Infiniti G37 coupe, scheduled to be unveiled at the upcoming New York International Auto Show in April, 2007.

While conventional engines control air intake using a throttle valve, VVEL-equipped engines do this directly at the intake valves, continuously controlling their valve events and lifts. C-VTC and VVEL together control the valve phases and its valve events and lifts, allowing free-control of the valve timing and lift. This results in more efficient airflow through the cylinder and significantly improves responsiveness, optimizing the balance between power and environmental performance.

The new engine offers the following advantages depending on driving range:

Higher fuel efficiency
At low-to-mid load ranges, the system controls air intake at the intake-valve, immediately before it enters the combustion chamber, in contrast with conventional engine air intake via a throttle valve, leading to increased efficiency by easing airflow through the cylinder.

In the low- and medium-rpm ranges*3, intake-valve lift is kept low to reduce camshaft friction and improve fuel efficiency.

Better response
Controlling air intake at the intake-valves improves acceleration response by allowing more dense air into the cylinders from the start of acceleration. More power
In the low-rpm range, the intake-valves open for a shorter period, preventing blowback of the air-fuel mixture and improving torque. l In the high range, greater intake-valve lift allows increased air intake to deliver greater torque outputs.

Cleaner emissions
Intake-valve timing is optimized on startup, when the engine is still cool, to quickly raise the temperature of exhaust gases and more quickly activate the catalytic converter.

Hydrocarbon emissions are reduced in the low-to-medium range by keeping intake-valve lift low, speeding intake flow and dispersing the fuel into a fine mist, resulting in more efficient full combustion.

The VVEL improves fuel efficiency most effectively in the low-to-medium operating range, thus it is best matched to the multiple-cylinder and higher displacement engines, that typically operate within that range.

Under the Nissan Green Program 2010, Nissan has announced plans to develop gasoline-powered engines with CO2 emissions reduced to levels comparable with diesel engines, to be available globally by 2010. For multiple-cylinder, high-displacement engines, Nissan will combine VVEL technology with the direct-injection system.

The VVEL system
A rocker arm and two types of links close the intake-valves by transferring the rotational movement of a drive shaft with an eccentric cam to the output cam. The movement of the output cam can be varied by rotating the control shaft within the DC motor and changing the fulcrums of the links. This makes a continuous adjustment of the valve lift amount possible.

*1 VVEL: Variable Valve Event & Lift
*2 This percentage improvement is measured by Nissan by comparing an engine with the VVEL system to an identical engine without it.
*3 The accelerator pedal is pressed halfway or less.

don't forget about honda's upcoming A-VTEC coming up in 2009, before nissan's, and it also does the same thing, more power and more fuel efficiency.

Nissan makes some of the best V6's in the world. No V can match a BMW's silky inline six.

Huh?? Only the BMW Valvetronic has continuously variable lift. I-VTEC has continuaously variable timing and two sets of cam cuts I believe, but STILL needs a throttle valve to throttle the engine. This new VVEL and Valvetronic don't need throttle valves. The VVEL though actually responds 32% quicker than Valvetronic and is 20% smaller and uses 52% less parts per cylinder than valvetronic. So basically this valve train trumps ALL, PERIOD. Word is that Nissan V8's will get this AND DI.

Nissan was the first manufacturer to feature Variable valve timing on a mass-production vehicle. Test bed 1989- on the Nissan (Japan only Stanza/ Bluebird 6cyl). It then showed up on the 1990-91 US bound 6cyl 3.0 Maxima). BMW's VVT first showed in 1990 (almost about the same time, albeit later).
In a sense, you could call Nissan the VVT pioneer- a little known fact in today's acronym-gone-nuts tech glossary.

As Tiff Needell put it, Honda engine is just a motorcycle engine and that's the only thing they are good at and brag about. Look at the 3.5 V6 of Acura, it's definitely not at the league of Nissan or BMW. Start making real engine for car.

Ferrari is able to do it more because of how much they can spend to produce the engine compared to other companies with such large displacement engines. The Honda engines rev range is partially that it is a 4 banger and partially that it has a patented system to make use of two cam profiles. The second cam on the honda engines can be extremely hot while the first is a lot less so to save fuel economy. Last thing is that the S2000 is a lot more expensive car than other honda's with 4 cylinder VTECs so they probably spend extra money on the engine and use lighter components to make it all work. These new Nissan engines redline at 7500 rpm though and that isn't a long ways off. Probably more amazing than all of this froma revving stand point is that the Chevy LS7 OHV engine can rev to 7000rpm. Now that is amazing!

If small liter engines are as great as RICEMASTER says it is, and TheSailor is wrong, hell, let's take out those 20,000 liter engines from those container ships and replace them with couple small liter engines. And we'll have our Fast and the Furious container ships. How awesome would that be?

Like TheSailor stated RICEMASTER, it all comes down to physics. However, as you can see ladies and gentlemen, it would be no use for me to explain everything because TheSailor has said everything I would have said and if I were to repeat it, this bloke here who thinks Honda is god, would be even more confused.

Mind you all I am a Honda fan. However, I do show concession that no single company can stay at the top forever. And by all means Honda nor Toyota or Nissan will stay

It is Infinately easier to produce a Small Displacement/High Revving Engine compared to one twice its size with same Rev Capabilities.(Simple Logic)

Also F1 are so far ahead of Regular Consumer Vehicles it really is like comparing the Single Engine Cessnas to the Russian MIGs.

Finally from my post above it should be clear that making High Revving Large Displacement Is quite Expensive hence its use on Absolute Top-End Vehicle Models.

ARE YOU SERIOUS!?!?! Now I know that your automotive and motor sport knowledge does not extend past "2 Fast 2 Furious"!

To be precise rules for the 2007 Formula 1 season permits only a 2.48L V8 engine. All engine manufactures on the grid are limited to a spec. rev limit of 19000 rpm. Last year's season two teams were able to use the 2005 spec engines which were 3.0L V10 engines. They were rev restricted to 17000 rpms. The 2006 season saw rpm limits of the 2.48L V8 in excess of 19000. BMW/Sauber F1, Scuderia Ferrari, Honda, and Renault hit 21000 rpm repeatedly in qualifying. During race conditions they even had an over-rev button that would allow the drivers to reach a maximum of 20000 for overtaking purposes and to keep the integrity of the engine intact. 2006 was also the first year of this engine formula.

In response the comment that a 4.0L V8 is the same as a 2.0L I-4 is only partially true. If you mean the similarity between them is in the individual cyclinder volume then you are correct.

- I-4 with 500cc per cylinder would= 2000cc/ 2.0L
- V8 with 500cc per cyliner would= 4000cc/4.0L

Specifically in the case of the new E92 M3's V8 the capicity of each cylinder is slightly less than 500cc (499.375cc) per cylinder. Allowing for the 3995cc capacity.

The F22 engine in the Honda S200 has two camshafts. The 2008 BMW M3 will have four camshafts. Hmmm...sounds the same to me.

Please for the love of whatever diety you believe in stop talking out of your A** and at least research SOMETHING before you open your mouth and remove all doubt.


*FYI* VTEC was introduced in the 80s during the Turbo era of F1 by you know who... BAR Honda.

I think Toyota's VVTL-I from the 2ZZ-GE found on the Lotus Elise is the best!!
