Happy Birthday: Volvo turns 80 and celebrates with XC70 at New York

How is Volvo going to celebrate their 80th anniversary? By unveiling the new Volvo XC70 at the New York Auto Show in two days. Volvo is celebrating eight decades of safety consciousness and care for the environment. Volvo is globally recognized as the safety leader due to their founders Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson, who said: “Cars are driven by people. The guiding principle behind everything we make at Volvo, therefore, is and must remain, safety.”

I respect Volvo as a brand. I respect the owners. But I don't respect people who talk down on the brand because it's not as mainstream as the rest. It's under-rated luxury and very well understated. It wouldn't necessarily mean I would buy one.

I find their cars on the wrong side of understated-- bland.

Having an XC70 or S80 on vacation (or on an extended drive) is a pleasure. But any other time, the cars are a snore. Bland interiors, bland exteriors, bland engines, bland handling.
