2008 BMW M3 Production Version leaks on the net!
While the exterior remains faithful to the prototype, the E92 M3’s interior is kinda of a let down as we where expecting something more than a stock cabin with red dial gauges.

As it's already known, the M3 which will go on sale this autumn, will be equipped with a “chopped” version of the M5’s V10, a 4.0-liter V8 delivering 420Hp and a peak torque of 400 Nm or 295 lb-ft (top engine speed is 8,300 rpm). According to BMW, the E92 M3 needs 4,8 sec for the 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) sprint (0,4 sec faster than the current model) while top speed will be electronically limited to 250 km/h (155mph)

As far as "destroying" the current RS4 in the straights and quarter-mile you can forget about it. Audi states the same 0-62 in 4.8 seconds as BMW. The RS4 has been clocked as low as 4.3.

The M3 will at best get a 4.2, unless BMW serves up a ringer that somehow ends up beating its manufacturer predicted time of .6 seconds or more.

It will certainly be quicker than 4.8, but to say that it will destroy 4.3 seconds, such as posting a 4.0 flat is not going to happen.

We can confidently say that for 0-62 the RS4 and M3 will be neck and neck.

The bottom line is that due to the AWD system on the RS4 and it's drivetrain HP loss to the wheels, it will be nothing close to the fun factor as well as power to the wheel factor of the BMW.

I still don't see any real good distinction from this and say the 335 coupe. De-boost me all you want, BMW needs to add a little more aggressive design as with the "current" M3.

Germannut.... that's a funny name.

not as funny as comparing a hopped up audi to an M3.

By the way my daily driver is an A4. But I can still admit where they fall short of BMW.

You consider an RS4 a "Hopped Up Audi" ???

I think that lets us know all we need to know about you

Audi falls short in driver feedback and purity of driving experience. It doesn't fall short in straight-line acceleration according to manufacturer times, it doesn't fall short on price-tag and lastly, it doesn't fall short on ample horsepower, torque or exaust note for that matter either.

I guess we will have to wait for the RS5 to compare the M3 coupe to the Audi coupe.

Isn't the Audi RS4 stated 4.8 from 0 - 60 not 0- 62?
and BMW M3 will be 4.5-4.6 from 0-62.

That's splitting hairs. The two will be extremely close. I find that somewhat surprising considering the identical horsepower ratings and the M3's weight advantage. Perhaps the RS4's torque keeps it competitive.

Hwany you are incorrect, both the new M3 and the Audi RS4 are 0-100 km/hr in 4.8 seconds. Both cars are 0-62 in 4.8 seconds.

GermanNut, you have to remember that BMW constantly posts very reserved 0-62 times. They posted the M5 as doing 0-62 in 4.5/4.6 seconds but people were easily able to get that down to 4.1 seconds after it was released, so saying that it will be extremely unlikely that the M3 will beat the RS4 is just ignorant. I know where that need to defend your favorite car company comes from, I'm a BMW fan, but I would rather state the true facts then argue something without being able to back it up well. Don't worry, the RS4 is a beast but I also think that this new M3 is going to be a beast so we will have to see which one will reign supreme.

P.S. I love how the new M3 looks, its gonna go like @#$% too, can't wait.

Straight from audiusa.com under technical date for the RS4:

Acceleration 0-100 km/h 4.8 seconds

Look at the original post of this thread:

According to BMW, the E92 M3 needs 4,8 sec for the 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) sprint (0,4 sec faster than the current model) while top speed will be electronically limited to 250 km/h (155mph)

I am not feeling that hump in the hood, and the car needs a more aggressive look. I'll just take the 335i coupe.

BMWM you are a moron. The M5 is stated as 0-62 in 4.5/4.6 seconds.

Getting it down to 4.1 means shaving .4 or .5 off BMWs estimated time.

The RS4 does the same thing. 0-62 estimated in 4.8 but has ran a 4.3 as its fastest time. again .5 off the stated time.

The Audi R8 is stated as 4.6 from 0-62, it has ran 4 flat.

The M3 is stated as 4.8 from 0-62, I don't think it is going to run a 4 flat or even 4.1. Maybe 4.2 at its fastest.

I'm not defending the RS4, I'm stating BMWs estimates for the M3 put the acceleration on par with the RS4

"BMWM you are a moron."
"I'm stating BMWs estimates for the M3 put the acceleration on par with the RS4"
"I think it will be more like a 4.2 or 4.3 at fastest."

German Nut your posts are consistently riddled with obsurd statments. Why is someone who disagrees with you a moron? Why do you even e-argue about numbers from other peoples experiences(are these your measured 0-60 numbers?)? Why waste your time? This goes for everyone who seems to focus on the numbers game. Fact of the matter is that tenths of a second are exactly that. Fractions of a second only really discussed in the minds of the people who either have these cars for pride and recognition or who want them for that same thing.

There will always be a faster car, and it will always be cheaper, and someone will mod a neon and get some number faster than a ferrari. If you are a driver, and your focus is driving none of this will mean anything.

Is the car going to be fast.... YES BMW probably would not release the next gen M3 and not have it be an intense car, that being said I think it being fast has very little to do with whatever numbers are discussed.

Josh

p.s. I happen to agree with you personally. I actually think the M3 will be slower in a straight line than the RS4.

GermanNutGermanNut - 4/4/2007 11:04:08 AM

The average is .5 off the stated times, with .6 being the biggest difference for the R8.

What makes you so confident that the M3 is going to destroy the 4.8 second time estimated by BMW and post a .8 difference with a 4.0 time.

I think it will be more like a 4.2 or 4.3 at fastest.

Look at the numbers, the torque figures are lower, the weight is lower and the horsepower is near identical.

It is not physically possible for the M3 to destroy the RS4 in straight line acceleration.

Simple as that.

Everbody knows that arguing about whether the RS4 or M3 or whatever will do what 0-60 time is pointless. You have to take into account the ambient temp, the humidity, tire pressure and of course driver skill. Hence why they maybe could have different times. I know that it is a stretch to believe but I had a hunch.

I have a question: why are the top speeds of most cars from Germany limited @ 155mph? Why not leave the limiters alone?

It's a "gentlemen's agreement" between Audi, BMW and Mercedes. I forgot why. Porsche is exempt... lucky.

Oh and- Audi broke the rule with the new R8. You can reach about 190 in it. You can also pay for resetting the limiters on any AMG Benz.

It was a gentlemens agreement to limit 2 155mph-- the M cars are allways understated. If BMW(motorsport gmbh) are reading this THANK YOU for making the M cars.

The E46 still is the better look for M3. Wider stance and more aggressive lines. The m3 now has been softened up a little too much. A performer it still is but it doesn't have the looks to go along with it.

GermanNut, I don't think it's necessary to be debating between the RS4 and M3. I've said this before... the M3 is the ultimate sports coupe, with perfect steering, perfect gearbox, perfect engine and great style. The RS4 is now the ultimate sports sedan, with equally great steering, a slick six-speed, an intoxicating exhaust note and a sexy bodykit.

Because it's a two-door, I prefer the M3 at the moment... for ME. That's not to say I don't like the RS4 as much- they're equal to me. I'd just own an M3 convertible before I owned an RS4 sedan, unless it was my winter car. And it would be cruel to delegate an RS4 to be a lowly "winter car."

To go on, I'm in love with the new M3. The red color shown is fantastic, the wheels are superb and there's some very cool new details in its bodykit (like the air vent being a strip of LEDs with an M sign on it). There's also a high-revving 420 V8 like the RS4's, which I love, as well as usable back seats and a hardtop for the convertible. It could very well be my next car.

I love BMW, but this car is boring. I am not too excited about the humps on the hood either. It looks a little too "boy racer" and not enough "sexy prowess." They really need to work on the interiors as well. I have ridiculed Audi for their boring, consistent exterior, but I am going to have to level the same criticism against BMW and their predictable, utilitarian interiors. I enjoy the "keep it simple" mind of BMW when it comes to the interior, but we can go a little more elegant without going gaudy. It is time for a change.

i live in ny and really need awd. i have a 2005 m3 coupe now. i was considering getting either a 335xi coupe or the next m3. i like the looks of the m3 alittle more but do u guys think it will be sooo much better ???
im kinda disappointed in the torque rating being the same as the 335i and just horsepower being 100 more. basically the m3 is just 1 second faster than the 335ci and like 15,000 more. but i am a nut for speed and image. any advise?

If you need AWD, you'd still look at the M3?

I live in Chicago, and need something to get me through the winter also. If it's within your budget, do what I do: I have an S4 Cabriolet that, althought it has quattro, I don't want to mess up in the winter. So, I bought myself a winter "beater:" an A3 2.0T. It doesn't have AWD, ironically, but it's a trooper... and not half-bad to drive.

If you don't want to get a new car for the winter, spoil yourself with the M3 and get something like a used 330xi for the colder months. I had planned on looking at a used 330xi myself, but my BMW dealer sucks. They were completely inattentive.

Just an idea.

I agree with you S4 .. I am in chicago also. I have a 330xi sedan for my fiance to drive in the winter and a 335 coupe for the summer. To me, awd is not really as a neccessity in chicago. Not for 5 days of winter. This year was a typical 7 year cycle for a bad winter. It is once every 7 years or something like that. For me it is RWD and if it gets that bad, I will just get some snow tires.

LexusLexusLexus,

You make no sense.

BMW has no platform to produce an xi model for the 3 series? Buddy, your beloved IS-F was based on the IS I don't get what you're trying to prove. And for the record the previous generation IS was a Toyota :-)

I don't know about you but I think that a Toyota Altezza had dreams to become a luxury car and Toyota let Lexus do it.

At least BMW doesn't have a eco brand to leach off of.

Wow! this is really exciting, I wonder if the new BMW M3 is going to be good enough to beat the current Audi RS4? No matter what they are both great piece of engineering. But I hope the current Audi RS4 will hold on to it crown. I like the current Audi RS better than the new M3.

On the other hand, I hope the Lexus IS-F is going to be just as good as the this two. Well I guess we just had to wait and see.

More important is how the car drives and feels on the road, as the M3 is not out we have to wait to judge it.
