NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: The 2008 Lexus LX 570 Sports a New Look

NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: The 2008 Lexus LX 570 Sports a New Look
Lexus unveiled the all-new 2008 LX 570 full-size luxury utility vehicle at a press conference today at the 2007 New York International Auto Show. The all-new third-generation LX will feature more technological advancements to provide added power, luxury, safety, roominess and both on- and off-road capability over the award-winning LX 470 it replaces.

"The all-new LX 570 is packed with the luxury appointments and seamless technology our buyers expect of a Lexus vehicle," said Bob Carter, Lexus Division group vice president and general manager. "Equally important, the new LX 570 sets a high-water mark for Lexus by providing more on- and off-highway prowess than ever before, while at the same time providing the amount of interior space, comfort, luxury and ride quality our customers demand."

Improved Power Performance The LX 570 will be equipped with a powerful 5.7-liter V8 engine that will produce 381 horsepower, over 110 more than the vehicle it replaces and over 400 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine will be mated to a new six-speed sequential-shift automatic transmission designed and built for large tasks. Both the engine and transmission are controlled and linked by sophisticated electronic management systems that help ensure optimal performance and fuel economy, with minimal emissions at all times. The new LX is expected to be certified as ULEV II.

With its upgraded powertrain mated to a new chassis and suspension system, the LX 570 will have a towing capacity of 8,500 pounds, an improvement of 2,000 pounds over the previous model.

Innovative Suspension and Technologies Significant upgrades to the suspension and full-time four-wheel-drive system raise the LX to new levels of driving comfort and performance, on- and off-road. A Four-Wheel Electro-Hydraulic Suspension with Active Height Control (AHC) and Adaptive Variable Suspension is quicker and allows for a greater range of adjustment than the system it replaces. The new cross-linked system allows each wheel to react to the driving surface it is in contact with and also react to the actions of the opposing wheels. Using a valve at each corner and a center or master valve, the cross-linked suspension system detects the extension or deflection of each of the LX 570's 20-inch wheels and counters that with appropriate response at the opposite wheels.

The intelligence built into the LX 570's new suspension senses chassis roll and helps reduce that roll by more than 30 percent. The system also controls ride height quickly, lowering the chassis by an average of two inches for entry and exit and returning automatically to its normal height when the vehicle begins acceleration.

For improved aerodynamics, the new AHC system lowers the vehicle by nearly one inch in front and by a little more than a half inch in the rear at highway speeds. Finally, when the transfer case is shifted into low range, the AHC system raises the vehicle by approximately three inches to provide additional ride height in driving situations where chassis clearance is at a premium.

The LX 570 will also include a new Crawl Control feature for increased throttle control when maneuvering over rough or difficult surfaces. When in low range, Crawl Control helps maintain appropriate low speeds allowing the driver to concentrate on steering the LX 570 on the desired path. Similar to cruise control in maintaining vehicle speed, Crawl Control also actuates a set of virtual locking differentials to minimize tire slippage and maximize chassis behavior. Because chassis control is significantly improved, the likelihood of bottoming the LX 570 on the driving surface is significantly reduced.

While Crawl Control can be compared in some ways to cruise control, the driver constantly maintains control over the vehicle. Without cancelling the Crawl Control mode, the driver can reduce vehicle speed by braking, or alter the speed higher or lower by adjusting a speed selector switch.

The new LX 570 will also feature a multi-terrain ABS braking system. This new technology is designed to help reduce stopping distances on slippery surfaces such as sand or gravel. Among its many advanced technologies the LX 570 will also offer a new blind corner monitor feature designed for use in urban settings such as exiting a parking garage. With cameras located within the grille and under the passenger side-view mirror, the driver can easily check hard-to-view areas by simply pressing a button on the dashboard and viewing the camera images on the navigation screen.

Lexus Styling
The luxury styling of the new LX 570 emphasizes the Lexus identity by combining the muscular strength and sense of security expected in a four-wheel-drive utility vehicle with the simplistic originality of the Lexus L-finesse design theme, making it much more refined and dynamic than its predecessor. The bold theme of the new LX carries over from front to rear with a wide stance and brawny cabin proportions that are accented with subtle character lines and luxury touches such as chrome-plated door handles and moldings.

The wide front grille and arrowhead design on the corners reflect a Lexus styling cue. Distinctive character lines in the hood convey a feeling of power. The character lines are integrated into the bumper and lower intake to convey an aggressive stance. The large projector headlights are restyled to add a dose of sophistication to the beefy front end.

The cut-line above the front fenders adds to the performance image of the new LX while the wheel arches add an element of ruggedness to its clean profile. The running boards are fitted closer to the body to provide a more integrated appearance.

In the rear, the LX features a sculpted rear door for a more dynamic look and wide combination lights that emphasize its large size. The combination lights and license plate are accentuated with tasteful chrome accents. A six-spoke 20-inch alloy wheel design creates a two-dimensional appearance that is sporty yet elegant. The styling is complemented with features that include Adaptive Front Headlights, a power back door, puddle lamps, headlight washers and a front wiper de-icer.

Spacious Interior Comfort
The overall wheelbase of the new LX 570 is unchanged from its predecessor, helping to maintain its impressive maneuverability. However, interior and exterior length have increased by at least four inches and width by nearly an inch, creating a more inviting and comfortable space for up to eight passengers and their cargo.

Inside, the LX cabin is modern, civilized and characteristically quiet. It will also be equipped with an array of luxury amenities including four-zone independent climate control complete with numerous air vents, a power-sliding second-row seat with a 40/20/40 split, a power third-row seat, navigation with Bluetooth® capability, a nine-speaker premium audio system, XM Satellite Radio with XM NavTraffic, a real time traffic information service that provides driver alerts regarding accidents, road closings and traffic, front seat power bottom cushion extenders, and much more.

Advanced Active Safety Technologies
For enhanced safety, the new LX will feature a segment-leading 10 standard airbags including driver- and front-passenger knee airbags, second-row seat-mounted side airbags and third-row curtains. Among the many safety features on the new LX are Active Front Headrests, a first for a Lexus utility vehicle, second-row seat belt pretensioners, and a direct tire pressure monitor system.

Luxury Amenities
In addition to its numerous standard features and advanced technologies, the LX 570 will also be available with a number of optional amenities including climate controlled front seats and heated rear seats, a 19-speaker Mark Levinson® audio system with Reference Surround Sound and a hard disc drive capable of storing up to 2,000 songs, a rear seat entertainment system with a nine-inch screen, the Lexus Intuitive Park Assist, a first-in-its-class Pre-Collision System with Adaptive Cruise Control and Lexus Link.

Luxury packages will also be offered on the new LX that will include features such as semi-aniline leather interior trim, a cool box in the front center console, illuminated scuff plates, unique wheel finish, a Smart Card key, and Bubinga wood trim, a wood used to craft fine furniture, instruments and to decorate private jets.

The all-new LX 570 will reach Lexus dealer showrooms in early 2008.

I am really disappointed with the styling of the new LX570, but then I didn't buy my LX470 because of styling - I bought it for its outstanding build quality, rugged performance capability and incredibly comfortable interior.

If Mercedes ever gets around to making their vehicles with acceptable quality and to installing features I need like (a.) reversing camera (b.) touch-screen navigation (c.) easier-to-use bluetooth connectivity then I'd be saying adios to my Lexus LX.

Similarly if the next Infiniti QX has much better build quality and more stylish lines I would switch. Of course if BMW builds a much bigger SUV than the X5 I'd quit Lexus. Alternatively if the Audi Q7 weren't so ugly [hearse] and the Range Rover had better reliability then I'd also say goodbye to the LX.

In the meantime the LX will still rule in my book, regardless of looks because of build quality, comfort, and capabilities.

MercBasher, you're an Audi-hater, not a Merc-basher. I don't find the Q ugly; for a big SUV, it has one of the most innovative, sexy shapes on the road. 19" wheels are great.

At least you can admit to not liking the LX570. I much prefer your 470.

Nice replacement for the old LX. Exterior design isn't breathtaking and kind of funky, but the interior more than makes up for it.

Not sure how someone could complain about the buttons being "cheap". Lexus has always used class-leading quality plastic on their cars. Hell, even a base Camry outdoes a new Caddy in that respect.

The price should be interesting. I wouldn't be surprised to see it hit the $80K mark.

The GL is nice, but about a decade too late from being innovative.

"The GL is nice, but about a decade too late from being innovative."

It doesn't need to be innovative to be class-leading. The similarly-sized Q7 is more innovative IMO, but not quite a class-leader. The GL's enticing combination of understated, classy style, a fabulous interior, great performance and truck-like versatility earn it points in my book. It has all the necessities, and nothing fussy to take away from that. Fully worth the $65K... and BTW it's also less than the LX ($54K base).

Lexus Bashing / Toyota bashing .. yup its on in full force. I guess when Toyota took its gloves off and went full force into the US hinterland and simultaneously Europe, the backlash from disgruntled, xenophobic users had to be expected.
Fortunately, its seems that most of those that bitch away are like servo.something.. no money to back up their claims. Hence Toyota / Lexus still sell like hot cakes.
As for styling, that a very subjective matter. Land Rover has always embraced boxy styling, so much so that its raison de etre. Hence i am happy that Lexus took a style language into consideration, beats having one off styles each time.

Most posters here miss the point of the LX/LC, it does not matter which one is based off which one's platform because like it or not, the LC of which this lexus is most likely based on, is still the king no matter what the horsepower says, Toyota has been in this game for longer than most of the Euros companies exept maybe for Land Rover and to a lesser extent the MB.

The problem with the X5'S,ML'S,Q7'S of this world is that are more urban poser cars for rich housewifes! Who cares how fast this thing goes or whether it can outhandle a Porsche 911 or not.

The core strength of this car like its LC cousin is agility, robustness and the ability to carry out its intended purpose with flying colours, that is what this is designed for, not to compete with porsche's ,or BMW M5'S (like the X5 and Porsche Cayenne). I couldn't care less whether is faster than the competition or not that's what M3'S and Ferraris are there for in the first place.

The irony here is that this is one strength no one can take away from Toyota because they have been in this game for a long time unlike the Euros who came on just because there is a market for SUV'S(not implying that they are not good) and carry that "me too" image you have to respect Toyota at least for having the heritage in this segment that the Euro posters on this website always accuse Lexus for not having. The world cannot be wrong about this because go to some of the roughest terrains in the world eg. Africa,Asia etc. you will see why it so renowned worldwide not forgetting the Land Rover.

While I usually like most new Lexus products, I'm not really a big fan of this one. Plus with the extended product lifespan of the previous model, I find it very hard to believe that this is the best that Lexus could come up with given 9 years.

Barf. What a bore. Interior isn't half bad. I hope no one ever gives Mercedes any more flack for too many buttons! Escalade, Range Rover and GL kings of this class. Like the IS-F, Lexus misses the mark. Too many goofy styling elements.

Range Rover is the king of this class and the MB GL class which came out not too long ago is good. But the Escalade... come on! Escalade is king of chrome and thus, lots of rap stars like the Escalade but that's about it. Although the new Escalade is a better SUV overall than the old one, it is still a GM product. It has nice looking wheels for looking bling bling on-road. But its off-road capabilities are a joke compared to the Range Rover, Lexus LX and the MB GL.

By the way, those people who say that the LX is based on the Toyota Land Cruiser and as a result, put the LX down, I say you all, you are all ignorant and know nothing about off-road SUVs.

Land Cruiser's world renowned legendary off-road capabilities coupled with Lexus luxury makes the LX 570 a great luxury SUV ... right up there with other legendary SUV, the Range Rover.

But I also agree that the rear lights do look a bit Navigator-ish. May be when Lexus refreshes it in 3 years or so, they will redesign the lights. (BMW 3-series syndrome, great car with no so good looking lights.) Hope Lexus will offer a 5-spoke wheel option.

Overall, great job Lexus!

You guys have to admit that the new LX is an improvement over the previous version. However, I too am very disappointed. Lexus went tooooo sleek. It's strange; I don't know exactly what it is that draws me to it. A friend of mine has an '05, and the car just has a very stately, classy look. Even if it's little more than a badge-engineered LC, it looks EXPENSIVE. Very tasteful. It's a "guilty pleasure" of mine.

The interior is also quite nice, very sleek. For a car introduced in 1998, the LX has kept up with the times quite nicely.

While its may not be the truck everyone was hoping for its not a horror show like some are making it out to be. Wait to see it up close before passing judgement.

I have owned many brands over the years. I bought my first Lexus six years ago (02GS300). Since then I have owned an 2003GX, 2004ES, and a 2006 GS300.

Do you want to know Lexus owners are repeat customers year after year - Yes in part its the high quality products they produce but its also their customer service (Lexus Loaner cars, Breakfast, Lunch, Luxury Lounge, Internet Access, Satellite TV, etc). They are first class all the way, second to no one.

Truth be told the new Tahoe is a fine looking truck and it drives very nice and I considered buying one. The problem is that I dont want to pay $50k+ for a loaded Tahoe whose companies idea of service is giving you a Geo from Enterprise as a loaner car. GM service happens to suck (2002 Trailblazer).

I am completelty underwhelmed.
This thing is plain nasty.

There are only three real SUVs - Mercedes G, Land Rover Range Rover (entire Land Rover line) and the Lexus/Land Cruiser. X5s, Escalades, X6s and Q7s do not interests me whatsoever.

Only these three have real off-road credentials.
Lexus lost an opportunity to match a 4 year old designed Range Rover.

Folks, there are people who take their $80,000 SUVs off-road like there are people who take their M3s and GT3s to the track.

The thing that bothers me is this has lost the brutish charms of the LC100 Land Cruiser.

The built in step-side is a no-no. It compromises approach, departure angles as well as ground clearance.

The split tail-gate is a rip-off of the Range Rover motif.

The levers for hi-lo,suspension height lacks the simplicity of the Land Rover terrain response system.

Note, in all the press-releases today. There is no mention of crawl-ratio, fording depth, whether or not this has locking front and rear diffs.

I am hoping the new Land Cruiser turns out to be better than this POS. Lexus has gone "blingafied"
At least Rovers stayed true to their roots and offer real 4x4 hardware. My RR Sport has lockers and can take it with any pre 2007 Land Cruisers.

Geez. I might be incline to say that the Hummer H3 is better than this polished turd.

Knock on wood. none of the land rovers that I've owned has been in the shop except one a few years ago that had a dead battery.

I do all the routine maintenance on all my cars and check the fluids every 200 miles and change oil every 3k miles. Even if I owned a Honda accord, I would follow the same maintenance methodology..

Again. knock on wood. i am hoping I continue to be lucky. My bosses' SC430 has been a total lemon. It has been in the shop 4 times for major repairs. He still loves lexus (go figure. he owns 3). He's always asking me about my Rovers and he is surprised I never had a problem.

Land Rover's reliability is not their strong suit. I'll admit to that. But, they do have a loyal following and you have to wonder why owners continue to buy.

But, from talking with service reps and other owners, it seems problems start occuring around 45 - 50K. At that point he would of bought a new one anyway. But, to own a Range Rover you have to be liquid. You have to be able to take $40,000 hit after a few years.

I agree with you that the GL is a nice SUV and I love the 3rd row seat, its got good leg room. My wife drives a 2000 LX470 and if I were to replace it, I would consider the GL. Now that I see this, there is no chance.

I never like the two color tone and sure glad that Lexus went with the one color scheme. Some idiot park right into the rear bumper of my wife’s 470, so I decided to repaint the whole car in black, instead of black and charcoal, and put in 20’s with 305/60/20 tires. I got to admit the one color scheme looks a lot better.

I like the new head lights and will miss the head lights on the 470, it’s different.

I bet none of you know what approach angles. For off-roaders,it is more important than 0-60 times.

Lexus would have been better served to use the Sequoia platform for the LX. As a king-of-the-offroader lux SUV, it has so many compromises.

Guys take it easy.
Do one thing. (Just what I do every time I see a new Car (design))
Put it as wallpaper in your monitors (For at least some hours or better a full day). This will just make u see it frequently, closely and thoroughly.

Then u’ll actually know whether it’s good or bad, or whether the design is real or not, or inspired or not….etc.
I mean then only u’ll be able to draw conclusions about the design. Not like this what u usually do (Straightaway Jumps to conclusions)

BTW after seeing the All New-LX for nearly 24 Hours now, I understood the design.
And guys believe me I find it Beautiful. Just the Rear is still not grown on me but I’ll try for some more time looking at it(watching it closely). I think I will discover it soon, I know the Rear of the LX got a love-it-or-hate-it-completely approach.

I'll tell u guys later about what I feel about the rear but the Front is really beautiful.

Hope u all got my point. Excuse my English, I am foreign

First off, the front end resembles the new LS (Which IMO is a good thing compared to the predecessor). Secondly, the rear end is hideous (might as well kept the old one). Last but not least, The interior looks like a nice quiet comfortable place to be. I don't doubt Lexus's standards in having good build quality and quiet cabins but this re-designs I must criticize as it isn't all that appealing.

I don't doubt and have never doubted Toyota's capability with their trucks. But if someone's sole purpose was to buy an SUV fully capable of handling rough terrain in absolute luxury and not even care about the exterior looks at all, that's absurd. It would be a lie if you said you didn't care.

My main concern about this new gen for the LX is it's rear profile. It's just as bad as the Lincoln Navigator (which in my mind is horrid from all angles).

In today's day and age, I feel that a great build must be complimented by a great exterior design. When you pay that much for a car no matter how much you say you wanted 'understated luxury', you still want people to compliment you by saying 'nice car' or 'hey that's a nice looking car you drive' that sort of stuff. It only boosts your confidence and gives you the feedback from your peers that you purchased a good car. You all say that Merc is all about the flash and a status symbol brand but even an understated luxury brand wants a little attention too whether they like to admit it or not.

All in all my conclusion to this car is that the interior looks good to go, build quality i'm sure is good to go, but the exterior needs an immediate emergency redesign (at least the rear end).

Luxury, quality and reliability are the attributes of a Lexus SUV. No other brand meets ALL these criteria.

Let us see if this vehicle goes the way of the Tundra, which is also an ugly monstrosity. Lexus/Toyota did a great job with the Camry in the looks department, but is pretty much dropping the ball everywhere else. Even the IS-F is ugly. Oh well, Lexus/Toyota is not known for their style.

Questionable styling is a matter of opinion. Truth is in the long run the Lexus will outlast most including the Range Rover.
