Toyota Keeps a Stiff Upper Lip and Says We Will Still Sell 200,000 Tundras This Year
Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. is taking the launch of its new Tundra in stride, refusing to panic over the prospect of using higher incentives to move the fullsize pickups off dealer lots.

Toyota last week added a $1,000 trade-in allowance on top of a discount of up to $2,000, a move considered unusual for a vehicle less than two months into its launch, particularly for Toyota.

But executives say that’s just part and parcel of today’s highly competitive truck market.

“Certainly the whole segment is very incentive-driven,” Don Esmond, senior vice president-automotive operations, says during a conference call with reporters to discuss March sales. “If you look at the market, a lot of competition has been ramped up. There’s $5,000 cash, trade-in cash, dealer certificates – a lot is going on in the market.”

Esmond says Toyota’s incentive programs vary regionally, but most are focused on “transaction issues,” helping dealers close the sale by contributing to trade-in allowances or financing. “We will continue to monitor the market to stay competitive,” he says.

what engineering an F-150 or Chevy is better engineered than the Tundra.

The Tundra commercials are funny to me now. Not the truck itself but the old man narrator straight from Hazzard County they got talking about the truck details. Toyota is seriously trying to get middle America to buy into this vehicle.

will they make the mark? Sure!

Will they have to stoop to incentives likes the others? Sure!

Will the incentives hurt resales? Yep!

Incentives are evil and proven to hurt long term values. Just ask any domestic owner.

100% correct -- Toyota is stupid to chase a sales goal. Let the truck stand on its own two feet, don't offer rebates, and keep resale values high.

u.s. tv commercials for full-size trucks: effective or not (that is the question!)
a. tundra rolling thru the mud- lots of ppl like playing in the mud. EFFECTIVE.

b.silverado, ppl on horse ranch - lots of ppl have ranches and horses. EFFECTIVE.

c. f150 offroading and then ramming a cake w/ 30 candles - off-roading ok, but slamming into a giant cake, i dont think so. EFFECTIVE (let the f150 have its cake, it does deserve it, 30 years as a best seller)
d. tundra, teetertot towing and racing head on into a conyon. NOT. im sorry but ppl will not be swayed by these hollywood stunts. and i agree w/ everyone else on the announcers voice. still, the truck is impressive.

Have you seen the tundras on the street? Sytle is not this truck's strenght by any stretch.. It's getting spanked up and down by GM.

Have you sat in one yet, the interrior is no contest - what was toyota thinking? Sure its stiff and has a big fast motor and a good trans - it deserves sales on those qualities alone, and ONLY those qualities.

Ford's working with a 4 year old truck - the new vehilce is still a year away. Toyota will make the sales quota - but its a lot more painful to take over when the big domestic three are strong in a segment.

Btw, i know a bunch of the engineers who moved to toyota from Ford and a lot are ex truck people from GM, Ford.. same tools, newer project, new corporate directive.. the key - huge toyota $ to spend on development.
