Back in 1997, it was easy to dump the worlds first mass-produced hybrid. But early days have gone and Toyota Prius proved its value. Its complexity and prospects, embarrass any rival. Yet, is one of the most durable cars, today.

Use some of the aerodynamic features that the prius uses on the civic and I bet it will get better fuel economy than the prius.

The prius is a heavy car for its size. All that extra battery and electric engine don't benifit the MPGs. The prius is just another Toyota marketing myth.

Hybrid is designed as a city car ,
the reviewer has the car driven mostly on hiway and cruise, it is possible for a civic to out MPG it. If the battery motor has no chance to run , the gas engine ( which is smaller than civic) will run so hard and give bad MPG.

It is hard to beat hybrid's city MPG with a gas civic. You pay more to support the idea of trying new things to save gas, so dose the gov't paying credits to car makers and buyers.
you may pay more for the Prius , but it can resale for more too.

The only truth of the article is , civic / prius , either way , u use almost the same amount of gas under most situation. If u really want to save gas, maintain ur car properly.

I guess more and more people are getting stupid (those who buy hybrids). Only you, my friend, is the wise one. I own a Prius for 2 years. 16-mile metropolitan commute, 50 city/50 highway. I am getting 45mpg so far. In my previous car, '98 540iA, I was getting 16.5mpg. Same driving style. That is a fair comparison.

How about you? Do you own a Prius when making such comment? Or, you just read rubbish from internet?

Buy the Civic, dump the money in credits, cut pollution everyone wins. You get a fun car, for less money, and the 'real' pollution is cut at its source.

Sounds to simple, your right. I don't really know what I am talking about, but maybe someone who does can explain to me why thats not better for everyone.

Ahh more FUD. I guess this is what you call "Prius Envy". For most people living in urban areas where there is "traffic" teh Prius works wonders. Ofcourse, like every engineering solution it will not be applicable for every use case. Sort of like saying a Ford 150 can tow more then a Ferrari F430 across a longer distance hence its more powerful.

Forgetting the fact that the Prius is emitting far fewer smog forming emissions and CO2 (and of course, everyone always seems to forget that), there are other areas where this article breaks apart.

One, obviously a smaller car should get better mileage. The Prius is not a small car, it is mid-sized.
Two, maintain any car well and you will expect the mileage to increase. A well maintained Prius will get better mileage than an ill-maintained one.
Three, using good fuel saving driving skills will maximize the mpg of any vehicle, but it will give you astronomical mpg in a Prius. When I do long drives (say 30 minutes) around the city I routinely get 65-70 mpg, driving slowly and with other fuel saving techniques. Highways, easily 55mpg, by staying on cruise at around 67 mph, decelerating slightly on inclines, and building a little extra speed on declines. The only time mpg hovers around 40 (and thats nothing to sniff at) is on short trips under ten minutes.

So go ahead and keep putting on these articles about how many other vehicles beat the Prius in this area or that area. Keep perpetrating the myths that make drivers of diesels and conventional ICEs feel good. Meanwhile, 20,000 consumers a month will keep dismissing the myths, and will make the switch to hybrids. And tens of thousands of barrels less oil will be consumed, and the air will be a little less brown, and glaciers will retreat a little more slowly because of us. And that's all I need to know.

p.s. I love the idea of hybrids, the concepts of alternative energy, and conservation.

The Honda Civic hybrid is a perfect competitor to the Pruis, except one thing. For God's sake change those rims. So the next generation Pruis better make some damn good modification so it can survive the Civic and not do what they did to the Lexus LX or the Pruis concept they showed few months ago, otherwise the Civic will pass it on.

I asked a taxi driver that owned the Pirus and he was getting an impressive 6 litres per 100km city, not as good as advertised but still impressive.
The civic is the most efficient car from the gas burners,
the goverment should look at tax incentives for cars with mielage as good as the civic! I hate to mention it but the cab driver of the pirus complained that it required a lot of maintenance $$$, remember they drive a lot.

My brother has a 1996 Civic Si and he did something to the fuel filter, spark plugs, and air filter and now he gets anywhere from 45-55 mpg. The Prius is rated at 60 mpg, but hey, that's not bad for a non-hybrid.

The Civic GX is an interesting choice. I'd consider it were I searching for a fuel-miser.

Otherwise, I think I'd take a Civic Hybrid over the Prius and swap out the rims.

But I wouldn't. I'd get a much better-looking, much faster Civic Si that still gets 30mpg.
