NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: Lexus LX570- STUD or DUD?

NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: Lexus LX570- STUD or DUD?
The hottest new SUV at the 2007 New York Auto Show was definitely the new Lexus LX570.

Not only was it a significant step forward compared to the old LX470, the new truck employs some pretty cool new technological features (Lexus Intuitive Park Assist, first-in-its-class Pre-Collision System with Adaptive Cruise Control, new blind corner monitor) not available on any other SUV. We want to know...Is it a STUD or a DUD?

Make sure you go into detail about WHY you liked it or didn't...favorite features, etc.

1) Beatutiful interior with quality appointments.
2) Based of the Toyota LandCruiser, to anybody who knows anything about offroading, you will know what this statement means.
3)Intriguing exterior design. Lexus went with its own design language, which I like . Individuality as opposed universal blandness.

All in all a good evolutionary update to the LX470. No doubt that it will sell by the boatload. (especially in California)

When was the last time someone bought a Lexus to take it off-road?

When was the last time someone bought a Landcruiser for offroading? Today, people buy a Landcruiser because it is an affordable SUV and it is seen as hip or "in fashion". Two of my neighbours have Landcruisers and those things are always shiny. There's never any mud or dirt on them.

As good as the Landcruiser may be offroad, even that car is hardly bought for offroading anymore. And seriously, with a gas-guzzling V8 in the American Landcruiser, I hardly doubt a sane person will even attempt to safari it for fear of running out of gas.

The 1970s and 1980s Landcruisers were "real SUV's" with economy in mind. The current Landcruiser has mutated into a semi-luxury SUV with good offroading capabilities but terrible range because of poor fuel economy.

I am tired of people spouting the fact this is off-road credible because of its land cruiser roots.

I own a real land cruiser as my weekend toy- A 1971 Fj40. I've also owned a FJ60, FZ80 in the past.

The last real land cruiser SOLD in the USA was the FZ80 (1991-1997) Land cruisers and LX 450. They have solid axles and can be fitted with rear locking diffs.

The LX 470 and current LC do not have rear diffs available in the USA.

The Land Cruiser legacy stems from the fact that the United Nations and peace keeping forces uses the older FJ70s and prados (none of which are sold in the USA). The hard core - defender, mercedes g-wagon type land cruisers are not sold in the USA. They even have land cruiser trucks. They're like the defender, they are barebone without the lux pretenses.

In the UK, the version we have now is called the Land Cruiser "Amazon" It is a plush mobile. All the reviews and tests I've seen have derailed the current LX470/current LC.
The mythical land cruiser name should not be applied to these current vehicles. The FJ Cruiser is more of a offroader than these lux mobiles.

Don't count on these posh mobiles to be representative of the land cruiser legacy.

Back to this truck. The design is horrid. Massive overhangs, 20" bling wheels. It has no off-road provenance. They should have stuck with the Sequoia platformed and glammed it for US consumption. At least the Sequoia can compete with the Escalade and Hummers.

It's a dud in a design standpoint. In a functionality standpoint it's still got it. The interior is a much needed improvement it looks like it should have been.

Exterior wise I prefer the new front end with the old rear end. Interior I would obviously take the new one as it's much more refined looking. It's basically an LS in SUV form.

Somewhere in between... the exterior I'm starting to get used to, but I still prefer the LX470's understated, more elegant lines. When you get past the front end, nothing about this car looks like a Lexus to me.

Interior is an improvement. Looks sumptuous. It is busy with all of the different details, but I'm sure it's a very pleasant place to spend a road trip. And I loved the 470's interior, too- I didn't think they could make much improvement.

This car is without a doubt a STUD. I dont even think you should be comparing it to the GL, its in a class of its own. I couldn't chose one or the other for exterior design, but the interior of the LX is much richer and packed with more features than the GL.

So, instead of admitting that the GL is easily the better-looking vehicle like all of the sane posters, you make an excuse like you're "not choosing between the two?" What is that?

And have you ever sat in a GL? It may not have as much wood trim as the new LX, but the interior is much more focused in its appearance, and is really quite luxurious- up there with the Range Rover. It's also $15K less than the outgoing LX470... Lexus better be competitive with the 570's pricing.

Some cars sell despite being ugly. Lexus customers have demonstrated in the past that they don't care much for design, or have no idea what constitutes a design that is considered elegant or classy.

The LX570 is neither elegant or classy. It's a monstrosity thrown together from old Toyota and modern Lexus styling cues and utterly fails at looking balanced or beautiful.

I wouldn't be surprised if it sold well, but keep in mind that this car will probably sell based on its utility ratings, not design.

I'm SHOCKED that no one in this forum even mentioned fuel economy. With gas prices on the rise, and yet, if this was GM unveiling something, it would again show the world that GM was close minded and out of touch. Toyota launches a new/heavier Tundra and a new full size Lexus model and yet...nothing. Interesting..

WillisWillis - 4/10/2007 4:53:26 PM

Design: I have to say this, unproportioned. Hard to believe that the company that designed the LS460 also designed this monstrosity. Nothing feels balanced on the outside. A bloated LS460 front, a 1990s Landcruiser side and rear profile. Boring and dull. Sorry Lexus fans, but this truck is a dud design wise.

Interior: Material wise, ok. Design wise, not pleasing. A Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator copy, but with better materials. Dissapointing overall.

I'm not really an SUV guy anyways, but this car lacks an interesting style. Compared to the Mercedes GL or Audi Q7, the LX570 is one ugly truck.

Design is subjective. Personally, I feel that the Mercedes GL is the best looking big SUV in this segment. It's also very offroad capable and comes with more efficient engines (diesels) as well.

What is disproportionate about the Escalade's design? It's a very classic-looking truck. The LED taillights add to it, they don't detract.

The Q7... it looks HORRIBLE in pictures. But on the road, especially with the 19" rims, all thoughts of seeing it online wash away and it looks sexy for a big SUV. The design, with all its dynamicism, is very innovative.

The LX. The new LX. It looks like Lexus took a big, square chunk of clay, stuck a front end on, and shaped the wheel arches with their fingers. The wheel wells are ill-fitting, the rear lights are smaller and uglier than the 470's, the front looks like a mutated LS460 (and not in a good way), and they could've at least picked better wheels. The brass who chose the LS460 and LX570's rims were obviously not those who chose the IS350's.

zaza, your bias is keeping you from seeing clearly. Instead of submitting to your emotions and admitting the car is ugly, you excuse everything that's wrong with this design as, "it doesn't have to be beautiful." If I was plunking down $75 fu¢king grand for a truck, I would want it to look GOOD. And that's where the Range Rover comes in and makes this look like a turd. The Range Rover is five model years old.

The LX470 does offer something this car doesn't: elegance. The interior is also more focused and less busy. No, I haven't seen the 570 in person, but you get a pretty clear idea of what it will look like from these pictures. Lexii don't usually look different on the road from pictures. I am not a stupid hater zaza...as luxury continues to be developed and diluted for the masses - Lexus will continue to gather favor. Lexus is a great brand for people who depend on their luxury vehicles everyday...maybe you should read a couple of books before coming to the table - start with Trading Up and then move onto Status Anxiety. Do you ever hear about RR or Bentley or TRUE luxo brand talk about QRD? Nope. and why, the owners are not focused on that peice of the vehicle. There is nothing wrong with Lexus at all - but they offer a luxury solution for everyone. The vehicles are inherently not special - why would their #1 color be beige? Wake up champ.

zaza, why are you trying to shove your ideas down our throats? WE DON'T LIKE THE LX570. Nothing you say or do will change that.

Yes, it's luxurious, reliable, blah blah blah (same old crap), but this is NOT anything new. This car is a small step backwards IMO, and although it may have a better transmission and a better engine, the car itself will not necessarily be better. The LX470 will go down in my book as the best-looking LX ever. I'd like to see Lexus make something better-looking, in that size, at that price.

As of now, I find the GL, Q7 and Range Rover better-looking than the new LX. NOTHING YOU SAY WILL CHANGE THAT. Get used to it.

zaza,

A bit hypocritical are we?

You told S4cab not to judge the looks of the LX until it was on the road, yet YOU still manage to say the Q7 'has NOTHING' on the LX before anyone has even driven the damn thing!

Who reeks of bias now?

You do!

Yeah, annoying little kids with brains and spelling capabilities.

Seriously, buy the language you use and your inability to grasp certain concepts, I'd say you aren't even 18 yet.

It's usually those who call people 'little kids' that are the little kids themselves.

Let me ask Zaza something. Have you seen this car in real life? You keep telling people that it looks better in real life. So let's hear some detailed and intelligent responses from you about why this car looks better in real life?

To me, this thing looks butt ugly, yes, butt ugly. As many have said, unproportioned and chubby are what come to mind. And this is a luxury SUV which means it has been watered down from the original offroading capabilities of the Toyota Landcruiser. The interior is also ugly in terms of design. It lacks a pleasing flow and has no elegance to it. Seems to me like Lexus designed this interior within a week - and got inspired by the Cadillac Escalade's interior. In fact, the LX570's interior screams "AMERICAN SUV INTERIOR". Look at the interior of the Q7 or the GL, those are elegant and pleasing. The LX570 interior is not.

And the Landcruiser was popular because it was an affordable car with good qualities. These days, Landcruisers are getting more and more pricey while at the same time becoming uglier. Seriously, and no offense, but Toyota's styling department needs a major overhaul as soon as possible.

"zaza" while you're so busy telling everyone on this site they sound like idiots, you don't realize what an idiot you sound like.

Like is it all of us or is it just you? The jury's spoken...you jus keep telling everyone it's not a dud though.

Let me try & put it to you like this...Design wise the IS is nice, the GS is nice, & the LS isn’t bad. The LX on the other hand, well, it’s not so nice. Okay? Now leave it alone.

By the way not many adults make excessive use of the word “dude” like you do.

I support zaza's stance on the issue of the LX's exterior looks. It may not be the best looking, but there is no ugly on this car. Like I mentioned before, the new LX 570 will steal away customers of QX56 and Navigator.

Funny thing about this website, when LS 460 was first launched everyone called it ugly, now its a thing of "beauty". Stop hating! ToyLex could of did better, but they didn't fail with exterior of this car. I believe this car will increase the sales of the LX in the states.

NEXT TOPIC PLEASE.
we've already created two ridiculously long blogs about a car that will have little impact on the market.

One thing about most posters here is the high level of ignorance, most just live on the internet and try to give off flawed opinions about things they do not know anything about.

All SUV'S in this segment are exellent, but the LC/LX platform are still the undisputed kings of their respective class, please stop your Ignorance and bias and travel around the world especially in Africa, Asia,Australia and the mid East you will see why!

Maybe in Europe and N.A these Suv's may never leave the suburban roads but take it offroad any you will never fault!

Someone get some Ritalin for zaza please.
This terrible two tantrum has gone to long, let change topic.
Even BMW acknowledged that the 750 sedan had some “cosmetic issues” and made design changes thereafter, unfortunately ToyoLex will not likely do changes on this car.
As said before the LX470 is elegant, the LX570 is a design engineer on a bad LSD trip.
2007 LX 470 Rules, 2008 LXCALADE 570 Drools and I am a ToyoLex fan.

And @ the LX/LC manages to stay true to their heritage roots they and have no point to prove! The Euro manufactures have only recently entered into this segment (exept for LR/RR and G wagon) becauase there is a market and all of a sudden most posters here think they know what an SUV is supposed to be all about!

I browsed the club lexus forum... Guess what. They have real photos of it. On page 5 of this thread... NO UNDERSIDE BODY ARMOR. WTF is that. This is suppose to be an offroader.

Lexus Fan boys read and weep. Your LX faithfuls (current LX450/470) aren't too keen on this truck.

HMmm... I guess Agent009 decided to ban "zaza." For what? He was fighting the good fight just as I used to do before I realized my rationality was wasted on such stubborn ignorant German fanboys...

All this hating and yet this truck will still be a success. That's okay you guys, just wait for the NEXT generation in a decade or so, then you'll LOVE the way this looks.

im a lexus fan but, this new LX dont impressed me physically, it looks dated esp. the rear as if it didnt posses the L-finese concept at list a bit, except for the grilles and headlights...i think seeing it in person will prove my doubts, hopefully
