That’s Absurd: Haglund says Al Gore should buy Chrysler
Of all the buyers in the running to buy the Chrysler Group, Rick Haglund of mlive.com thinks that Al Gore should take the company off Daimler’s hands. Why? Well, Rick thinks that former US Vice President Gore should stop relying on novels and Hollywood to convince the world to stop destroying the planet through global warming and should “put some skin in the game.” Rick says Gore should buy Chrysler and make it the greenest automaker on the planet.

Haglund says Gore should “Dump Chrysler’s gasoline-fueled internal combustion engines altogether and replace them with fuel cells, electric motors and engines that run on biofuels, such as ethanol and biodiesel.”

He goes onto point out Gore’s achievements such as best-selling author, Oscar winner for his movie, “An Inconvenient Truth,” and 2007 Nobel Peace Prize nominee. We’re just wondering one thing: Gore has no automotive industry experience whatsoever. Good one Rick.

Zaza you need to to eat a carrot and sprout a brain. Gore is about the biggest joke in politics to come around in a long time. Just like the global warming scare is the biggest propaganda scare tactic machine since the invention of political fueled scare tactics. Sure the globe is warming, but please show me a period in earths history when it wasn't either warming or cooling!!?? There is just nothing that suggests the earth has ever had a constant temperature. Why should it now??

1970toyotamarc, whatever dude! You ever try and dive into the data yourself?? It become pretty obvious pretty quick that there is nothing at all conclusive that human, CO2, or any particular thing at all is a major driver in the overall warming trend. Most of the ACTUAL scientist will admitt this to some degree also. To ALL the real scientist global warming is a known, but the causES are all THEORY's. There is no such thing as a global warming LAW. This basically means the understanding of warming trends is still very immature. There is data that will support about any climate driver claim you can dream up. Funniest thing about it all is that there is no data what so ever that gives really stron indication that CO2 has ever caused warming. The only decent data on this is related to glacier samples(who know exactly how reliable they are?). And even the ice data tends to show a line in which CO2 increases seem to follow warming rather than lead it. There is ocean data that tends to suggest such a CO2 increase following warming could be logical. Then there are factors not even mentioned or thought about in any data I can find much at all. One such thing is that decay in melting tundras when warming occurs could cause huge CO2 increases in as it will take a good bit of time for the new vegitation that begins to grow for the first time to actually use more CO2 than what the decay is creating each warm season. I could go on and on with different things that are really not at all understood or known factors in the Carbon cycle, but it is a really immature science to date. Then there are the scientist who first suggested global warming might be happening back in the 80s and suggesting it could be due to humans now reversing their beliefs about the human aspect as more data comes out suggesting Humans and CO2 increases might not be the real drivers.

Why can't people just accept that humans just MIGHT be the biggest contributors to the general rapid warming trend of the Earth? How is it that people can't fathom a correlation between the largest number of people populating the planet and the most rapid increase in the Earth's temperature? You know what is sad, even your precious oilman president has admitted to global warming, and has begrudgungly acknowledged hat something will have to be done. He can do so now, because he has spent the last 6 years raping and pillaging the world to line his oil-rich pockets, and can now pass the buck to someone else to make the sacrifices. But be clear, sacrifices will have to be made, and he knows it.

So the question becomes, why do those of you who cling so desperately to the past persist with this absurd notion that you can do whatever you want to the earth, with no side effects. I see only one answer. You refuse to acknowledge that you will have to make any sacrifices. Maybe you will have to sacrifcie 100hp, or even in 20-30 years, start taking trains or public transportation if the entire auto industry becomes unsustainable. All within the realm of possibilitities.

Now to answer of few of your direct claims....
"Most of the ACTUAL scientist will admitt this to some degree also" Untrue, the vast majority agree that global warming is happening, and that humans are partly responsible.

"To ALL the real scientist global warming is a known, but the causES are all THEORY's. There is no such thing as a global warming LAW." If you know anything about science, there are very few laws, most of what we do is because of theories.

"glacier samples(who know exactly how reliable they are?). " They're actually quite reliable, just because you dont think so, does not change that.

"really immature science to date." No it's not, the science is actually quite good.

Your claims are baseless conjecture. Once again, give up the beleief that you can live in your insular world, start realizing that we are all interconnected to each other and our earth, and then maybe you will open your eyes to what is going on around you.

In fairness to Al Gore, he is a politician so he does not have to have any auto industry experience; however, I totally disagree with his notion that the internal combustion engine should be replaced by a bunch of expensive and less cost-effective technologies, most of which are still under development . I know this is hindsight, but the whole world should have taken a page out of France's book and gone 80% or 90% nuclear a long time ago instead of burning dirty coal and natural gas in power plants. If coal was burned using the fluid bed combustion process, the air would be a lot cleaner. Car engines are very clean today including the newest diesels that are about to hit the market. Al Gore is a smart guy in most matters but Bill Clinton was smarter.

Oh yet another piece of right wing propaganda. I'm loving this.

From National Geographic.....
"By studying fluctuations in the warmth of the sun, Abdussamatov believes he can see a pattern that fits with the ups and downs in climate we see on Earth and Mars. Abdussamatov's work, however, has not been well received by other climate scientists. "His views are completely at odds with the mainstream scientific opinion," said Colin Wilson, a planetary physicist at England's Oxford University. And they contradict the extensive evidence presented in the most recent IPCC [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] report." (Related: "Global Warming 'Very Likely' Caused by Humans, World Climate Experts Say" [February 2, 2007].)"

And...........

"Perhaps the biggest stumbling block in Abdussamatov's theory is his dismissal of the greenhouse effect, in which atmospheric gases such as carbon dioxide help keep heat trapped near the planet's surface. He claims that carbon dioxide has only a small influence on Earth's climate and virtually no influence on Mars. But "without the greenhouse effect there would be very little, if any, life on Earth, since our planet would pretty much be a big ball of ice," said Evan, of the University of Wisconsin. "

So the latest right wing myth gets debunked , once again, by the majority of scientists. Again, nice try.

How is it that people can't fathom a correlation between the largest number of people populating the planet and the most rapid increase in the Earth's temperature? will, here's an analogy i think best illustrates the selfish stubbornness and denials.

think of the earth as a old and large residential hotel. the manager (UN and International Treaties) is weak and unable to control selfish, irresponsible and unruly tenants.

so SOME of them leave the windows and doors wide open even in winter, 'cuz it's SO INconvenient to always open and close 'em. between the escaped moist air, and their cooking, the fumes spread thruout the hallways. sometimes their meals will BURN, and real smoke pours thruout the building.

the old furnace is burning poorly, spewing out excessive, smokey exhaust, co2, carbon monoxide, etc.

SOME people (responsible ecologists), are conscious of these problems and do what little they can TO NOT ADD to the mess. they minimize THEIR waste of energy and contributions of heat, co, nox and co2.

but the majority of SELFISH people, don't give a damn and do whatever they please. their EXCUSES:

"well the OTHER tenants (China, India, 3rd world) aren't controling THEIR emissions, so why should i?"

as for the hallways being overheated, with noxious fumes from the sickly furnace: "well, it's JUST a NATURAL thing. hotel furnaces (the Earth) have ALWAYS done this periodically."

so except for a few isolated corners, the WHOLE BUILDING gets worse and worse. NO ONE wants to clean up THEIR OWN act, using the FEEBLE EXCUSES above.

moral: REGARDLESS of whether global warming is "normal" or CONTRIBUTED TO by human activity, WHY ADD TO the problem?

(but selfish capitalist and corporate money grubbers and their propagandized apologists, have NEVER been moral until FORCED TO.)

More like the elitist know it all NY'er. And please, can you dispense with the "Faux New", blah, blah. How old are you? So, "Faux News" leans right, you have the rest of the media (ABCCBSNBCCNNNYTWP etc) to parrot the left's favorite cause. Typical liberal, resort to name calling when they get challenged or questioned.

That being said, I don't know who/what is causing global warming and neither do you. Hell, the scientists can't even agree. And there are many that disagree with the "consensus", however you will never hear them in the media (all in NYC) because it doesn't fit their agenda. And the UN is about as impartial as Al Gore or Rush Limbaugh. How do you take steps to correct something when you don't even know the cause?

Yes, we should work to clean up the environment, but just as those evil right wingers get money from evil Exxon, so does the evil left from their money backers...typically gov't grants or left-wing foundations. It wasn't too long ago that there was a consensus on global cooling or that margarine was better than butter.

My guess is that the truth lies somewhere in the middle, but do we destroy our whole economy to make NY'ers or the UN feel better. Sorry, until others "put up" like they want us to "put up", "F" them. And Kyoto is a bunch of crap...even Europe who signed on can't keep to the protocol.

Yes, I'll take the chance of waiting just a bit longer until we can get a little more solid info on GW. The scare tactics to this point just aren't that scary.

This thread is a reminder to me as to why I have become increasingly disillusioned with this site.

There is a circular form of recurrence scheme for topics on this site, and each time the same subject comes up it appears that the conversation becomes less informed and less erudite in the matter. Increasingly, the conversations are not about the facts or the subject matter itself, but instead about the egos of those involved and thus quickly disintegrate into ad hominem uselessness.

Scientific inquiry is about evidence and hypothesis supported by facts not models [This goes for any hypothesis. A model is a feasibility tool only.] If you can't cite a reference for it, don't cite it as fact. Qualifiers are used to distinguish fact as it is, from forms of interpretation based upon such.

Enough of that, I said what I wanted to say on this subject months ago...

"Scientific inquiry is about evidence and hypothesis supported by facts not models."

well, that's the thing, cdoke!

the models have been around for DECADES. and the facts/measurements have lately CONFIRMED both the theories AND models. most recently, it is coming out that the models have been UNDERestimating the effects.

yet, the deniers are still STUCK back in the theory and model stage. they are all ignorant about science. there are always scientists with a wide SPECTRUM of beliefs. they always just choose the (often paid off) scientists who support what they WANT to belive. and ignore the ones who not only would point out their errors, but have FACTS and actual MEASUREMENTS.

Bighead has seen and experienced changes in NY. so have i up here in Alaska. so have Inuit hunters who make their LIVING off the LAND and SEA.

and yes, the "theory" and "models" that predicted the global warming will become evident FIRST at the higher latitudes have been VERIFIED.

the Faux News and Flush Limpbag believers think that what we SEE and EXPERIENCE PERSONALLY is "just a false THEORY!?"

well, i guess it IS sometimes hard for them to SEE REALITY, since their heads seem permanently stuck up their anal canals! ;)
