Rumor: Bluetec based Mercedes AMG diesel in the works?

Europeans love diesels like they love their own mother. Okay, well maybe not that much, but enough to stay away from the market momentum, which is on its way to pump out petrol-hybrids for a greener environment. BMW announced yesterday that they will not be considering a hybrid car until unless its more economical than a diesel car and now, in a report made by TheCarConnection, Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division is rumored to be working diesel-powered performance car.

“In the near future,” Mornhingweg, AMG’s Boss, said AMG must add more green technology, though the challenge is to balance emissions, mileage and performance. “We have the opportunity,” he hinted, “for both hybrids and diesels.”

It about time. BRING on the performance diesels. Imagine the possibilities when AMG and M get their hands on this concept. Still, I would love see that huge V12 TDI from Audi put into a performance model.

Imagine driving a near-supercar that is green, economical to operate, and lasts for 1/2 million miles between over-hauls!

First of all, europeans (who don't know cars) love diesel more than their mother.(!)

Diesel is so popular in europe because it's cheaper and more economical. But you can't compare them.
Diesels are almost always supported by a turbo, and if the gasoline engines had those, they would drive circles around the diesels.

I drive a civic type r wich produces it's max power at 8000'rpm so i really don't like driving diesels :)

Valention you must be on dope. Europeans don't know cars - well than I guess Japanese are manufacturing Mercedes, BMW and Audis.

And for the fact - Diesle have never been cheaper than gas operated cars, more like they are more expensive than gas cars - even if you buy a used one it is more expensive than gas powered. Economical yes, that I admit, but you have forgotten that diesels have much more tourqe at it's disposal and therefore the gas powered have to compensate by having massive engines with enourmous HP to compete with diesels.

As for the Hondas - driven the Civic (not Type R) and it's a piece of rubbish. I mean you really have to push the car into Rpm's that Ferrari and Lambo reach and you still don't get anywhere. A lot of noise and no power if you ask me (let's not get into consumption). If I had a choice to buy a used Merc or BMW and a new Honda - I would choose my first two options anytime.

Those are the facts and one day you will come around too when your girlfriend/wfife will say '' can you please turn down the engine a little bit I can't here a word you are saying''... bummer

I didn't mean to but I'm sorry if i did.

First off all I'M european in case you didn't know :)
I know what i'm talking about when i say that europeans prefer diesel because it's more economical in the overall run. Off course they are 2000-3000 euros more expensive but their engines last longer.

And it's true that my tape R has to be redlining to get it to go but when it happens there's firework trust me.

I'm used to driving it and i like it alot. But when you drive a diesel and you have to shift at 3000rpm when youre used to 8000rpm it gets a little frustrating. But then again so are my friends when they drive mine.

As for my girlfriend, she won't complain about the noise because she drives a VW Corrado with aftermarket intake & exhaust system :)

Are there really people who claim to know cars that think modern diesels are anything close to the old, Mercedes-Benz 2.5 Inline 5. Diesel technology has come so far in the last five years, people who haven't driven a 2002 (or later) don't know a thing about modern, diesel power. Mulitply the performance by five; increase fuel economy by 30%; reduce the substances out of the tailpipe 90%; reduce the noise level by two-thirds; cut tubo lag to .25 of a second; and then that is what the modern diesels are like.

Modern diesels, supported by turbos, now outperform naturally-aspired gas engines. Gas power will now be forced to go to turbo-charging just to catch back up with diesels. Oh--but wait--to apply turbo charging and direct injection to gassers, one must fuel up with premium gasoline; and then you will still lose 25% fuel economy and torque to a diesel; and the diesel can use alternative fuel with no modification; no loss in performance or economy; and with no requirement for a special manufacture.
