Audi kills production plans for Roadjet concept

It’s been some time since Audi has been trailing behind other luxury auto makers like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus in the United States. The company is headed towards a more aggressive and dynamic look with recent launches such as the Audi R8 and the Audi S5 and A5. Now Audi is killing production plans of the Roadjet concept that it unveiled at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show.

Sources are telling Automotive News that Audi feels that the Roadjet, which would have been positioned above the A4, doesn’t fit with the company’s new agressive image. The German auto maker has already almost tripled its U.S. sales from 34,160 in 1997 to 90,116 in 2006. Not only that, Audi is set to double its model count by 2015.

"...positioned above the A4..."

Is that a typo? I always thought the Roadjet was supposed to be the A1. Is the A2 still being produced for Europe? If so, I agree with Audi, there isn't much use for the Roadjet. If they really want a Mini competitor, they can probably just refine the A2.

Somebody please refresh my memory...did they kill plans for the R4? I think that it would be a worthwile model if they place it above the TT with a 60-70k price tag. There really isn't much in that area other than the Cayman S and 911. A Lotus competitor would be pretty sweet as well...

Good idea Audi.It was really a boring looking concept(Car).
And who needs it when u already have an A3 whose sales are also healthy.

Just Bring the A4 replacement soon.

The concept was slick, but I don't think it would've been useful in the US market. They just don't need anothehr estate/wagon/crossover/sedan-hatch thing.

budfrog, the Roadjet was in fact based on the B7, but stretched. I believe it would have been called the A5 Sportback.
